The love that God desires from us

God desires that a man believe in Him more than in anyone or anything else in the world. God desires that a man hope in Him more than in anyone or anything else in the world. More than this: God desires that a man, by his love, cleave solely to Him, and then he will, through the love that radiates from this, easily be one with God’s creation.

This is man’s unity with God. This is the soul’s marriage to Christ. Only such a union between the soul and Christ, that is most clearly mirrored for us in earthly marriage, can make the soul rich and fruitful.

The soul’s ardent love for God is alone its legal marriage. Every other love, not through God but apart from God or against God, is idolatry. Thus, by love for the body, a man makes the body a false god, an idol. This means that a man directs the love that belongs exclusively to God to something less than God, to something less worthy of love. Whatever a man believes in, hopes in or loves more than God takes God’s place and becomes an idol to that man, a false god to a false soul. The prophets called all such idolatry adultery and harlotry (Jeremiah 3: 1; Ezekiel 23:7).

A man is saved or lost by his love in this life. There is only one saving love, and that is love for God. Every other love is loss.

Holy Bishop Nikolai, Homilies

A svako idolopoklonstvo veliki proroci nazivaju preljubodejstvom i bludodejstvom (Jerem. gl. 3; Jezek. gl. 23. 37.).

Svaka druga ljubav gubi.

Sveti Vladika Nikolaj, Omilije

Stewardship reflection

In today’s Gospel reading, we reflect on something that is very common in our daily life – excuses. How many times have you been given an excuse? You are depending on an associate, and you receive an excuse. You ask your children to complete household chores and you receive an excuse. The delivery didn’t make it on time and you receive an excuse. Now, consider God’s commitment to you in that He gave His only begotten Son for your salvation. He provides no excuses but just asks that you follow Him as a good and faithful steward. Consider making your commitment to Stewardship in the upcoming year without any excuses. Remembering “That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.”

Thy Mother, O Lord, is a Cause for Wonder

By St. Ephraim the Syrian

Thy Mother is a cause for wonder:  The Lord entered into her and became a servant; He Who is the Word entered into her, and became silent within her; the thunder entered her, and made no sound; there entered the Shepherd of all, and – in her – He became the Lamb – – – bleating as He comes forth. … The mighty One entered, and put on insecurity from her womb; the Provisioner of all entered, and experienced hunger; He Who gives drink to all entered, and experienced thirst.  He Who clothes all came forth from her – – – naked and stripped!  Praise to Thee to Whom all things are easy, for Thou art almighty.”

St. Nicholas surrenders Himself to God

He who surrenders himself completely to God is guided by God to salvation, and is used by Him for the benefit of many others.

St. Nicholas, devoted to the will of God, fled from the glory of men, from his city of Patara, and came to the city of Myra in Lycia, where he knew no one and was known by no one. Without any means-for, although he had been wealthy by virtue of his family, he had abandoned everything-without acquaintances and without plans, he walked as an unknown one throughout the city, waiting for God to direct his steps.

At that time John the Archbishop of Myra died, and the Synod gathered for the election of a new archbishop, but could not agree on any person who had been nominated. Finally, the members of the Synod decided to fast and pray to God that He would designate the one who was most worthy of this calling. God heeded the prayers of His servants and revealed to them the one most worthy. When the presiding bishop stood for prayer, a man appeared to him in light and told him to go out early, stand in front of the church, and await the first one who would enter for morning prayer. “Appoint him as archbishop; his name is Nicholas,” he said. Seeing and hearing this, the bishop informed all of his companions. Early the next day, he went in front of the church and waited. At that moment St. Nicholas, who had the habit of rising early for prayer, appeared. Seeing him, the bishop asked him: “What is your name, son?” Nicholas remained silent. The bishop again asked him, and he replied: “I am called Nicholas, O Bishop, the servant of your holiness.” Then the bishop took him by the hand, brought him before the Synod, and said: “Receive, brethren, your shepherd, who was anointed by the Holy Spirit and was elected not by the Synod of men but rather by the providence of God.”

Holy Bishop Nikolai, Prolog

Sv. I Bog posluša molitvu slugu Svojih i otkri im najdostojnijega. Videvši ovo i čuvši, episkop saopšti sve drugovima svojim i sutradan rano ode pred crkvu i čekaše. Episkop ga ponovo upita, i on odgovori: „Nikolaj se zovem, vladiko, sluga tvoje svetosti.” Tada ga episkop uze za ruku i odvede u sabor i reče: „Primite, bratije, svoga pastira, koga vam pomaza Duh Sveti, i koga izabra ne sabor ljudski nego Promisao Božji.”

The Holy Prophet Nahum

Nahum was born of the tribe of Simeon in a place called Elkosh on the far side of the Jordan. He lived about seven hundred years before Christ and prophesied the destruction of Nineveh about two hundred years after the Prophet Jonah. Because of Jonah’s preaching, the Ninevites had repented, and God had spared them and not destroyed them. In time, however, they forgot God’s mercy and again became corrupt. The Prophet Nahum prophesied their destruction, and since there was no repentance, God did not spare them. The entire city was destroyed by earthquake, flood and fire, so that its location is no longer known. St. Nahum lived for forty-five years and entered into rest in the Lord, leaving us a small book of his true prophecies.

Holy Bishop Nikolai, Prolog

Sveti prorok Naum

No vremenom oni zaboraviše milost Božju i ponovo se pokvariše.

READINGS FOR Today 27th Sunday/Holy Prophet Nahum
Epistle: Eph. 6:10-17; Reader: Joshua Pavlovich, Gospel: St. Luke 13:10-17.

Virtue is like a thirst.

When a man begins to drink of it, he becomes more thirsty and seeks to drink of it all the more. He who begins to exercise the virtue of compassion knows no measure and acknowledges no limit.

St. Philaret the Almsgiver was no less generous when he was impoverished than when he was wealthy. When his granddaughter became empress, he became a rich man once again, but no less generous. One day, he told his wife and children to prepare the best feast that they could and said: “Let us invite our King and Lord, with all His noblemen, to come to the feast.” Everyone thought that the old man was thinking of inviting to dinner his son-in-law, the emperor, and they all worked as hard as they could and prepared the feast. Meanwhile, Philaret went around the streets and gathered all the needy, the beggars, the blind, the outcasts, the lame and the infirm, and brought them to the feast. Placing them at the table, he ordered his wife and sons to serve at the table. After the feast was completed, he put a gold coin in the hand of each guest and dismissed them. Then everyone understood that by “the King” he meant the Lord Christ Himself, and by “the noblemen” he meant beggars and those in need. He also said that one need not look at the money that one gives to beggars, but rather one should mix up the money in one’s pocket and give only what the hand removes from the pocket. The hand will draw out whatever God’s providence ordains.

Stewardship Reflection

Are you prepared?

Today’s Gospel reading emphasizes that we do not know when God will call us. Our time here on earth is limited and as a result, we need to do all that we can for our Salvation. As we reflect on Stewardship and our Spirituality, are we preparing each and every day to enter God’s Kingdom. Think about the following:

Do we take time to pray and read the Scriptures daily?

Do we take enough time for our family?
Do priorities as listed in our checkbook match those as we list them to others? (i.e. Do we give more money to Comcast or DirecTV, or to the Church?)
Do we ensure that the number one focus of our talents is on the further development of Christ’s Holy Church?
Do we take care of the Ministries of the Church?
Do we take care of one another?
Do we take care of our environment

All very necessary for our salvation!

READINGS FOR Today 25th Sunday/St. Gregory the Wonderworker of Neocaesaria
Epistle: Eph. 4:1-6; Reader: Alexis Brunelle Gospel: St. Luke 10:25-36.

When asked about the poor… St. Theophan the Recluse reflected:

Let’s take an example: A beggar comes up to you; it is God who brought him. What should you do? You must help him. God has brought the beggar, of course, desiring you to act towards this beggar in a manner pleasing to Him, and He watches to see what you will actually do …If you do what is pleasing to God, you will be taking a step toward the ultimate goal, the inheritance of Heaven.

Stewardship, and how we use our Time, Talents and Treasures, shows us the way to Salvation.

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!
