The Holy Great-martyr George

On this day we commemorate the transfer of the relics of St. George, from Nicomedia, where he suffered at the time of Emperor Diocletian, to the city of Lydda in Palestine. The suffering of this wonderful saint is described in the April 23 section of the Prolog. Anticipating his martyrdom, St. George begged his servant to take his relics to Palestine, where his mother had been born, and where he had distributed his large estate to the poor. The servant did so. During the reign of Emperor Constantine, pious Christians built a beautiful church to St. George in Lydda and, upon the consecration of that church, the relics of the saint were interred there. Innumerable miracles have occurred from these miracle-working relics of St. George, the great-martyr of Christ.

Holy Bishop Nikolai, Prolog

Sveti velikomučenik Georgije.

Ovoga dana praznuje se prenos moštiju sv. Georgija iz Nikomidije u grad Lidu Palestinsku, gde postrada u vreme cara Dioklecijana. Stradanje ovoga divnog svetitelja opisano je pod 23. aprilom. Pred smrt svoju umoli sv. Georgije slugu svoga, da mu uzme telo po smrti i prenese u Palestinu, odakle mu i majka rodom beše, i gde imaše veliko imanje, koje razdade siromasima. Sluga tako i učini. U vreme cara Konstantina bude sazidan u Lidi krasan hram sv.

Sveti Vladika Nikolaj, Prolog

Demonski napadi

(Sveti Maksim Ispovednik)

demonic attacks

For five reasons, they say, God allows us to be attacked by demons. The first reason, they say, is that by being attacked and defending ourselves, we come to discern the good and the evil. The second — to acquire virtue by struggle and effort, and then hold to it firmly and immutably. The third — that advancing in virtue, we not think highly of ourselves, but learn humility. The fourth — that coming to know from experience what evil is, we come to hate it with perfect hatred (Ps 139,22). And the fifth above all — that we would not, by becoming dispassionate, forget our weaknesses, nor the power of Him who has helped us.

Holy Martyr Nestor

In the time of the suffering of St. Demetrius the Myrrh-gusher, there was a young man of Thessalonica, Nestor, who learned the Christian Faith from St. Demetrius himself. At that time Christ’s enemy, Emperor Maximian, organized various games and amusements for the people. The emperor’s favorite in these games was a Vandal by the name of Lyaeus, a man of Goliath-like size and strength. As the emperor’s gladiator, Lyaeus challenged men every day to single combat and slew them. Thus, the bloodthirsty Lyaeus amused the bloodthirsty, idolatrous Maximian. The emperor built a special stage for Lyaeus’s battles, similar to a threshing floor on pillars. Spears, points upward, were planted beneath this platform. When Lyaeus defeated someone in wrestling, he would throw him from the platform onto the forest of spears. The emperor and his pagan subjects cheered as some poor wretch writhed in torment on the spears until he died. Among Lyaeus’s innocent victims were many Christians: when no one volunteered to duel with Lyaeus, by the emperor’s orders Christians were arrested and forced to duel with him. Seeing this horrifying amusement of the pagan world, Nestor’s heart was torn with pain, and he decided to come forward for a duel with the gigantic Lyaeus. But first, he went to prison to see St. Demetrius and sought a blessing from him to do this. St. Demetrius blessed him, signed him with the sign of the Cross on the forehead and on the chest and prophesied to him: “You will defeat Lyaeus, but you will suffer for Christ.” Thus, young Nestor went to duel with Lyaeus. Maximian was present with a multitude of people; everyone felt pity for the young Nestor, who would surely die, and tried to dissuade him from dueling with Lyaeus. Nestor crossed himself and said: “O God of Demetrius, help me!” and with God’s help, he overcame Lyaeus, knocked him down, and threw him onto the sharp spears, where the heavy giant soon found death. Then all the people cried out: “Great is the God of Demetrius!” But the emperor, shamed before the people and sorrowing for his favorite Lyaeus, was greatly angered at Nestor and Demetrius, and commanded that Nestor be beheaded and Demetrius run through with lances. Thus, the Christian hero Nestor ended his earthly life and took up his habitation in the Kingdom of his Lord in the year 306.

READINGS FOR Today 22nd Sunday/Holy Martyr Nestor
Epistle: Gal. 6:11-18; Reader: Sasha Cerne Gospel: St. Luke 16:19-31.

Reflection from a parishioner…

In today’s Gospel reading, we learn about the rich and the poor, all they had and didn’t have, one with an earthly reward and one with a Heavenly reward. As I read these verses and the reflection from the Holy Fathers, I thought about the rich man and all that God had blessed him with. The rich man chose not to be a good Steward and not to share any of his wealth with Lazarus – although he had an abundance of everything.

How many times do I walk by the homeless person? How often do I avoid making eye contact with the woman carrying the sign “Please Help Me” on the exit ramp if the highway? How many times do I pass judgment on the person in need when I should not? How many times do I say “I am just too busy to spend an hour at the homeless shelter?”

From this Gospel reading, I decided to change how I approach these situations, not just from the perspective of sharing what God has provided for me, but, from the thought that I will be judged based on what I have done and my Stewardship is part of my personal Salvation!

Koliko puta prođemo pored siromašne osobe i beskućnika?

THE GARDEN OF THE HEART

THE new life, the life in Christ you have chosen, has often been likened to that of a gardener. The soil he tills he has received from God, as well as the seed and the sun’s warmth and the rain and the power to grow. But the work is entrusted to him.

If the gardener wishes to have a rich harvest, he must work early and late, weed and aerate, water and spray, for cultivation is beset by many dangers that threaten the harvest. He must work without ceasing, be constantly on watch, constantly alert, constantly prepared; but even so, the harvest ultimately depends wholly on the elements, that is, on God.

The garden that we have undertaken to tend watch over is the field of our own heart; the harvest is eternal life.

Eternal, because it is independent of time and space and other external circumstances: it is the true life of freedom, the life of love and mercy and light, that has no bounds whatever, and for just that reason is eternal. It is a spiritual life in a spiritual dominion: a state of being. It begins here, and has no end, and no earthly power can coerce it; and it is to be found in the human heart.

Persecute yourself, says St. Isaac of Syria, and your enemy is routed as fast as you approach. Make peace with yourself, and heaven and earth make peace with you. Take pains to enter your own innermost chamber and you will see the chamber of heaven, for they are one and the same, and in entering one you behold them both. The stairway to the kingdom is within you, secret in your soul. Cast off the burden of sin and you will find within you the upward path that will make your ascent possible.

The heavenly chamber of which the saint speaks here is another name for eternal life. It is also called the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of God, or quite simply, Christ. To live in Christ is to live in eternal life.

Tito Coliander, The Way of the Ascetics

 O vrtu srca

LAST WEEK WE SAW A GOOD TURNOUT of Church School children for our Fall celebration. Such special events make our classrooms full. Many thanks to our Church School teachers and pumpkins “helpers” who made this event possible. Parents, please bring your children to Church and to Church School each Sunday. They cannot reap the benefits of our rich curriculum if they are not present. And our awards of half tuition for Shadeland Camp and paid participation in  the Annual Youth Conference (for High School students) depends on their attendance at Church School. Don’t miss out! Bring your children to Church each Sunday and major Feast Days.

THE SVETA PETKA KOLO thanks all who came and celebrated their Slava  with them last weekend. There was a full hall of well-wishers, and a delicious meal prepared by the Sisters.

!PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING SOLDIERS IN YOUR PRAYERS: Thomas Vukcevic; Benjamin Pappas; Paul Campbell, Michael Rapasky; Brady Sexton, Jeffrey Izo, Michael Greenwood, James Koch, Adam Paich, John Stanz, Peter Mrvos, Michael Antecki, Matthew Ross, Steven Marrocco, Dane Gaynor. These soldiers are remembered at the Proskomedia (Service of Preparation) before every Divine Liturgy.
