A Pilgrimage Account

The Cathedral of the Metropolitan of Moldavia-Bukovina

It is located in the center of Iași within the metropolitan complex. The church houses a miraculous icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, the relics of our Venerable Mother Petka Paraskeva, a linen that covered the Belt of the Theotokos when taken to Romania, and partial relics of many saints.

The relics of St. Petka, by the great mercy of God to the Moldovan people, were brought from Constantinople to Iași, to the Church of the Three Hierarchs, on October 14, 1641. In this temple they rested until 1888, when a fire engulfed this church. All night the holy relics were in flames. In the morning after the fire, all were anxious about what they would find in the sarcophagus. By the wonder of God, the Venerable Petka once again testified to her saintliness. The relics were intact, even the wax seal that is stamped on her riza had not melted. After this incident the relics were transferred to the Cathedral where her sarcophagus is kept on a magnificent throne of gold.

We prayerfully spent most of the day with St. Petka. The calmness, humility and patience of the Romanian people waiting in line to venerate her relics is amazing. Someone comes and asks the Venerable One for help, and someone gives thanks for help received. The line continues all day long, not just on Sundays. And when the feast of St. Petka is celebrated, two million people come to pay homage, and Iași is a city with about 300 thousand inhabitants.

Many are the miracles and healings of St. Petka. We know that well who pray to her in the chapel dedicated to her at Kalemegdan. I will mention one interesting event in Iași:

– One year in the summer, there had been no rain in the area of Iași for a very long time. There was a risk of a major catastrophe. The clergy with the faithful people brought out the relics of St. Petka and went through the city in a procession. Shortly before one intersection, those who carried the sarcophagus with the relics of the saint were forced to let it down and were unable to lift it. She simply did not allow the procession to continue. Why? On the other side of the city went a procession with the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which was supposed to pass that same intersection. St. Petka gave the right of way to the Mother of God to pass first through that intersection. After the the Theotokos passed by, St. Petka allowed the faithful lift her and continue the procession.

Venerable Mother Paraskeva helps everyone who turns to her with faith and godliness, if it be the will of God and for the salvation of the soul and body of the petitioner.

Jedno Pokloničko Svedočanstvo

Saborna crkva Mitropolije moldavsko – bukovinske

Why the frescoes?

The icons and frescoes of the saints on the walls, and the candles and all other sacred decoration, have but one meaning: the unity of the Church on earth with the Church in heaven, or rather their identity. Assembled in the Temple we are the visible part, the visible expression of the whole Church, of which Christ is the head, and the Mother of God, the Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs and Saints are members, just as we are. We are in their company, we form with them one body, we are raised into a new dimension, that of the church in glory, the Body of Christ.…

All three parts of the temple (the narthex, the nave and the altar) are decorated with icons and frescoes. The word “decoration” however is not fully adequate, for the icons and frescoes are more than mere “decoration” or “art.” They have a sacred and liturgical function. They manifest our communion, our real unity with “heaven”— the spiritual and glorified dimension of the Church. Therefore, icons and frescoes are more than images. According to the teaching of the Orthodox Church, they make truly present those whom they represent, they are spiritual reality and not a mere symbol. Iconography is a sacramental art, in which the visible reveals the invisible; this art has its rules, or “canon,” a special method and technique of painting which has been elaborated through many centuries, to express the transfigured reality.

Fr. Alexander Schmemann, Liturgy & Life

One imaju svoju sveštenu i liturgijsku funkciju.

Sorrowful News

We were just beginning our campaign to help little Nevena Bozic in her struggle with cancer, when we received the news on Wednesday that she had fallen asleep in the Lord. Plans were already underway for a little Bake Sale today during our Banquet for her benefit. We decided to continue with the plans and send any funds that are collected to Nevena’s family to help with their considerable expenses. Envelopes are available at the Tutor’s Stand for any donations.

A PRAYER FOR THE BLESSING OF ICONS

O Lord our God, Who created us after Your own Image and Likeness; Who redeems us from our former corruption of the ancient curse through Your man-befriending Christ, Who took upon Himself the form of a servant and became man; Who having taken upon Himself our likeness remade Your Saints of the first dispensation, and through Whom also we are refashioned in the Image of Your pure blessedness;

Your Saints we venerate as being in Your Image and Likeness, and we adore and glorify You as our Creator;

Wherefore we pray You, send forth Your blessing upon these icons, and with the sprinkling of holy water

Bless and make holy this Icon unto Your glory, in honor and remembrance of Your Saints;

And grant that this sanctification will be to all who venerate these Icons, and send up their prayer unto You standing before them;

Through the grace and bounties and love of Your Only-Begotten Son, with Whom You are blessed together with Your All-Holy, Good and Life-creating Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Who can Recognize the Truth of Christ?

The Lord Jesus performed miraculous works before all and all saw but not all believed. The people witnessed His miracles and believed in Him. Servants heard His words and believed in Him. But the leaders of the people and the masters of the servants also witnessed His miracles and did not believe in Him. And so, in those days the words of the Savior came true: “But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first” (St. Matthew 19:30). “For behold, some who are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last” (St. Luke 13:30). Those who were first in honor and authority were last in having faith in Him; and those who were last in honor and authority were the first in having faith in Him.

Why did the people and servants believe and the princes and scribes not believe? Because, the people and servants considered themselves insignificant and unimportant and did not have any personal pride nor envy toward Christ. The people and servants, without malice and prejudice, looked upon the divine miracles and listened to the divine words and were amazed and rejoiced. The princes and the scribes considered themselves first among the people and in the world and so they were filled with pride and envy and were unable, even for a moment, to look upon the miraculous works nor to listen to the divine words without malice and envy.

Brethren, do you see how man, without humility and meekness, is unable even to recognize truth nor to rejoice in the truth? Do you see how the proud and the envious do not even allow God to be ahead of them? As did Satan, at one time!

Lord Jesus, eternal truth cleanse our hearts of pride and envy that we may be able to see You and to rejoice in You.

Holy Bishop Nikolai, The Prologue of Ochrid

Ko može da prepozna istinu Hristovu?

Gospod Hristos činjaše čudesna dela pred svima, i svi videše, ali svi ne verovaše. Narod vide čudesa Njegova i poverova u Njega. Sluge čuše reči Njegove i poverovaše u Njega.

Vidite li kako gordeljivac i zavidljivac ne dadu ni Bogu ispred sebe? Isto kao negda satana!

Gospode Isuse, istino večna, očisti srca naša od gordosti i zavisti. Da bismo Te mogli videti i Tebi se radovati. Tebi slava i hvala vavek. Amin.

Sveti Vladika Nikolaj

Helping Nevena Božić

Little Nevena Bozic is four years old. She was born in Brcko to her parents Predrag and Sanela Bozic. Nevena is diagnosed with carcinoma of the stomach that has metastasized to the brain, lungs, spine and bones. She is presently receiving specialized treatment in Turkey. The treatment results have been promising.

In order for little Nevena to continue this treatment she must collect 50,000 Euros (about $63,500).

We will be collecting donations to help little Nevena over the next month. There will be a box for donations here at the church. Checks can be made out the St. Stephen Church, indicating the intention “for Nevena.”

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

To follow the Canaanite woman’s lead we too must be committed to Christ with all our heart. We have to be persistent, tenacious, stubborn, undiscourageable and joyful. This is similar to the psychological toughness that Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10) had.

Both Zacchaeus and the Canaanite woman share something in common: they are tough and resilient, and take responsibility to overcome barriers.

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full,” (John 15:11). Grace is a gift of God but we must cooperate with that grace. Like the Canaanite Woman we have to start by making a choice even against all odds. We have to be committed against all who mock us and loving in the face of those who reject our love or even hate us.

As the crumbs of bread from the Masters table was the food that sustained the Canaanite Woman, may the food received by Orthodox Christians from the table of the altar during Divine Liturgy sustain us to become tough and resilient in overcoming the barriers of life in Christ. Glory to Christ in all things!
