The Power of the Cross

Concerning the power of the Cross and death of Christ, St. Athanasius writes: “Whose death ever drove out demons? And whose death have the demons been afraid of as the death of Christ? Where the Name of Christ is only invoked, there, every demon is driven out. Who in such a measure tamed spiritual passions in men that the prostitutes live a chaste life and murderers do not use the sword anymore and the fearful become courageous? If not the Faith of Christ? If not the sign of the Cross? And who else has so convinced men in immortality as the Cross of Christ and the resurrection of the Body of Christ?

The death of the Sinless One and the Cross of the Lover of men have brought a greater and more lasting victory than all the earthly kings with many multi-millions of armies. Which army was able to defeat a single demon? Meanwhile, only the mention of the Name of the Crucified One on the Cross peels to flight the army of demons. O, if all Christians would know what treasure they have in the Name of Christ, and what kind of weapon they have in the Cross of Christ!

Holy Bishop Nikolai, The Prologue of Ochrid

O Sili Krsta

Sveto Vladika Nikolaj

Krstov dan

Spasi Bože ljude svoje,
Spasi Gospode,
Krstom časnim Ti nam svetli,
Krstom na vodi!
Krst je sila i znamenje,
Krst je spasenje.

Spasi Bože narod Srpski
I sav njegov dom,
Daj mu snage da posluži
Tvom krstu časnom!
Krst je sila i znamenje,
Krst je spasenje.

Spasi Bože i sve one
Što su na vlasti,
Krst presveti nek ih čuva
Crne propasti!
Krst je sila i znamenje,
Krst je spasenje.

Spasi bože i sav narod
Što ti se moli,
Neka krstom svakoj muci
Brzo odoli!
Krst je sila i znamenje,
Krst je spasenje.

The Nativity of the Most-holy Theotokos

The Holy Virgin Mary was born of aged parents, Joachim and Anna. Her father was of the lineage of David, and her mother of the lineage of Aaron. Thus, she was of royal birth by her father, and of priestly birth by her mother. In this, she foreshadowed Him Who would be born of her as King and High Priest. Her parents were quite old and had no children. Because of this they were ashamed before men and humble before God. In their humility they prayed to God with tears, to bring them joy in their old age by giving them a child, as He had once given joy to the aged Abraham and his wife Sarah by giving them Isaac. The Almighty and All-seeing God rewarded them with a joy that surpassed all their expectations and all their most beautiful dreams. For He gave them not just a daughter, but the Mother of God. He illumined them not only with temporal joy, but with eternal joy as well. God gave them just one daughter, and she would later give them just one grandson-but what a daughter and what a Grandson! Mary, Full of grace, Blessed among women, the Temple of the Holy Spirit, the Altar of the Living God, the Table of the Heavenly Bread, the Ark of God’s Holiness, the Tree of the Sweetest Fruit, the Glory of the race of man, the Praise of womanhood, the Fount of virginity and purity-this was the daughter given by God to Joachim and Anna. She was born in Nazareth, and at the age of three, was taken to the Temple in Jerusalem. In her young womanhood she returned again to Nazareth, and shortly thereafter heard the Annunciation of the Holy Archangel Gabriel concerning the birth of the Son of God, the Savior of the world, from her most-pure virgin body.

Holy Bishop Nikolai, The Prologue of Ochrid

* The day of the Nativity of the Theotokos is the feast of joy for the whole world, because through the Theotokos the entire human race was renewed and the grief of the first mother Eve was changed into joy. For whereas Eve heard the divine statement, “In pain you shall bring forth children” [Gen. 3:16] the Theotokos heard, “Rejoice favored one!” [Luke 1:28]. Eve heard, “Your recourse shall be towards your husband!” and the Theotokos, “The Lord is with you!”

I zato behu postidni pred ljudima i skrušeni pred Bogom. Blagodatna Marija, blagoslovena među ženama, hram Duha Svetoga. oltar Boga Živoga, trapeza hleba nebesnoga, kivot svetinje Božje, drvo najslađega ploda, slava roda ljudskog, pohvala roda ženskog, istočnik devstva i čistote – to beše Bogom darovana ćerka Joakima i Ane.

The Synaxis of the Holy Illuminators and Teachers of Serbia

On this day are commemorated not all the saints of Serbia in general, but several archbishops and patriarchs:

St. Sava, the first Archbishop of Serbia, (+1236) called equal to the apostles.

Arsenius, (+1266) St. Sava’s successor, a great hierarch and wonderworker.

Sava II (+1268), son of King Stephen the First-Crowned, who lived a long time and Jerusalem and was called ‘similar to Moses in meekness.’

Nicodemus (+1325), who lived in asceticism on the Holy Mountain, and was abbot of Hilandar and archbishop of ‘all the Serbian and maritime lands.’

Joannicius (+1349) archbishop and then, from 1346, patriarch.

Ephraim (+1400), an ascetic, chosen against his will as patriarch in the time of Prince Lazar, in 1376. He crowned Lazar and then renounced the patriarchal throne and withdrew into solitude.

Spiridon (+1388), Ephraim’s successor.

Macarius (+1574), who restored many old churches and monasteries, printed church books in Skadar, Venice, Belgrade and other places, built the famous refectory in the monastery at Pec, did much for the advancement of the Church with the help of his brother, Mehmed Sokolovic.

Gabriel (+1656), by birth a nobleman of the Rajic family, who took part in the Moscow Council under Patriarch Nikhon, because of which he was tortured by the Turks and hanged.

As well as these, there are also commemorated Eustace, Jacob, Danilo, Sava III, Gregory, John Maxim and Nikhon. Many of them lived the ascetic life on the Holy Mountain, and all were ‘gentle and faithful servants, good laborers in the Lord’s vineyard.’

A New Ecclesiastical Year Begins

As our children begin another new school year, the Church also begins its new ecclesiastical year today, September 14 (September 1 on the Old Calendar). Beginnings are always a good time to reflect upon where we are, and where we are going. Or we can simply ask ourselves, “Upon what path are we walking? Upon a path that leads into the Kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of love, or upon a road that leads to death?”

As we begin a new ecclesiastical year, and as our Church ministries rev up again, maybe each of us can make a new attempt to reorient our lives towards God.

CHILDREN

Elder Paisios: When your children are still small . . .

“When your children are still small, you have to help them understand what is good. That is the deepest meaning of life.”

St. John Chrysostom: In children we have a great charge committed to us. . . .

“In children we have a great charge committed to us. Let us bestow great care upon them, and do everything that the Evil One may not rob us of them.

St. John Chrysostom: Let everything take second place to our care of our children . . .

“Let everything take second place to our care of our children, our bringing them up to the discipline and instruction of the Lord. If from the beginning we teach them to love true wisdom, they will have great wealth and glory than riches can provide. If a child learns a trade, or is highly educated for a lucrative profession, all this is nothing compared to the art of detachment from riches; if you want to make your child rich, teach him this. He is truly rich who does not desire great possessions, or surround himself with wealth, but who requires nothing…Don’t think that only monks need to learn the Bible; Children about to go out into the world stand in greater need of Scriptural knowledge.”

St. John Chrysostom: When we teach children to be good . . .

“When we teach children to be good, to be gentle, to be forgiving (all these are attributes of God), to be generous, to love their fellow men, to regard this present age as nothing, we instill virtue in their souls, and reveal the image of God within them.”

St. Porphyrios: What saves and makes for good children is . . .

“What saves and makes for good children is the life of the parents in the home. The parents need to devote themselves to the love of God. They need to become saints in their relations to their children through their mildness, patience, and love. They need to make a new start every day, with a fresh outlook, renewed enthusiasm and love for their children. And the joy that will come to them, the holiness that will visit them, will shower grace on their children.…. Love, harmony and understanding between parents are what are required for the children. This provides a great sense of security and certainty.”

SVETI VLADIKA NIKOLAJ:

BESEDA RODITELJIMAI

A deca će ući u carstvo nebesko. Deca su za večnost. Kad umremo, u onome svetu neće nam trebati ni kiša, ni telesno zdravlje, ni bogatstvo, ništa. Samo će deca naša biti s nama. I deca naša povećavaće radost našu. I koliko budemo dece rodili (bilo telesne ili duhovne) u ovome svetu, toliko puta biće veća radost naša u nebesnom carstvu.

Beheading of St. John the baptist

Kontakion Tone 5

The glorious beheading of the Forerunner was a certain Divine dispensation/ that the coming of the Savior might also be preached to those in Hades / Lament then, Herodias, that you demanded a wicked murder/ for you loved neither the law of God nor eternal life // but you loved a life both false and fleeting.

Usekovanje glave sv. jovana krstitelja

Kondak, glas 5.

Neka plače Irodijada jer bezakono ubistvo poruči: Ne zavole zakon Božiji, ni život večni, no varljivi privremeni.

HOLY MARTYRS FLORUS & LAURUS

Florus and Laurus were brothers in the flesh, and in spirit and in vocation. Both were zealous Christians and, by occupation, stonecutters. They lived in Illyria. A pagan prince hired them for the building of a temple to the idols. It happened that during their work, a piece of stone flew and struck the eye of the pagan priest’s son who was observing the work of the builders with curiosity. Seeing his son blind and bloody, the pagan priest began to shout at Florus and Laurus and wanted to beat them. Then, the holy brothers said to him that if he would believe in the God in whom they believed, his son would be healed. The pagan priest promised. Florus and Laurus prayed with tears to the one, living, Lord God and traced the sign of the Cross over the child’s injured eye. The child was immediately healed and his eye became whole just as it had been. Then the pagan priest Merentius and his son were baptized and, shortly after that, both suffered for Christ by fire. When they completed the temple, Florus and Laurus placed a cross on it, summoned all Christians and consecrated it in the name of the Lord Jesus with an all-night vigil of hymn singing. Hearing of this, the Illyrian deputy burned many of those Christians and threw Florus and Laurus alive in a well and then filled it with dirt. Later, their relics were revealed and translated to Constantinople. These two wonderful brothers suffered and were martyred for Christ and were glorified by Christ in the second century.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, Prolog

Sveti mučenici. Flor i Lavr.

A Flor i Lavr kada dovršiše hram, staviše krst na njega, pozvaše sve hrišćane i osvetiše ga imenom Gospoda Isusa i svenoćnim pjenijem.

READINGS FOR Today 12th Sunday after Pentecost/Postfeast of the Dormition

Epistle: 1 Cor. 15:1-11; Gospel: St. Matthew 19:16-26

WEALTH AND POVERTY

Do not ever say: ‘These beggars annoy me!’

So many millions of men live on earth and all are beggars before the Lord; emperors as well as laborers, the wealthy as well as servants, all are beggars before the Lord and the Lord never said: ‘These beggars annoy me!’”

+ St. Nikolaj Velimirovic

If you become rich, consider whether or not you could worthily bear poverty. If you are happy, imagine how you could worthily meet unhappiness. When people praise you, think how you might worthily bear insult.  And, all your life, think how you might worthily meet death.”

– St. Nikolai Velimirovich, “Thoughts on Good and Evil”

The rich exist for the sake of the poor. The poor exist for the salvation of the rich.”

– St. John Chrysostom

“I am often reproached for continually attacking the rich. Yes, because the rich are continually attacking the poor. But those I attack are not the rich as such, only those who misuse their wealth. I point out constantly that those I accuse are not the rich but the rapacious. Wealth is one thing, covetousness another. Learn to distinguish.”

–  St. John Chrysostom, Homily on the Fall of Eutropius

What hinders you from fulfilling Christ’s commandments?

The flesh and the world: that is, pleasant food and drink which men like, in which they delight both in thought and in fact, which make the heart gross and hard—a partiality for elegant dress and adornment, or for distinctions and rewards; if the dress or adornments are made of very beautiful coloured and delicate materials, then care and anxiety arise how to avoid staining or soiling them, or getting them dusty or wet, whilst care and anxiety how to please God in thought, word, and deed vanish and the heart lives for dress and adornment, and becomes entirely engrossed in these things, ceasing to care about God and being united to Him; if such is the case with a priest, then he neglects praying for his people, and becomes not soul-loving, but money-loving and ambitious, seeking not the men themselves, but that which appertains to them, that is, money, food, drink, their favour, their good opinion and good word, and flattering them.

Therefore fight against every worldly enticement, against every material enticement that hinders you from fulfilling Christ’s commandments, love God with all your heart, and care with all your strength for the salvation of your own soul, and the souls of others, be soul-loving.”

– St. John of Kronstadt

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

Fr. ThadDeus

“God is perfect, He is faultless. And so, when Divine love becomes manifest in us in the fullness of Grace, we radiate this love — not only on the earth, but throughout the entire universe as well. So God is in us, and He is present everywhere. It is God’s all-encompassing love that manifests itself in us. When this happens, we see no difference between people: everyone is good, everyone is our brother, and we consider ourselves to be the worst of men — servants of every created thing.”

“The Lord is always waiting for us to unite ourselves with Him in love; but instead, we drift further and further away from Him. We know that there can be no life without love. This means that there is no life without God, for God is Love. But His love is not according to the understanding of the world. The love that the world gives us consists of suffering and enslavement, because the spirits of evil interfere with it. There is a little bit of love, but mostly it is just enslavement.”
