Commemoration of the Holy FATHERS OF THE 1ST SIX ECUMENICAL COUNCILS

On the Sunday that falls between July13 and 19, [old calendar]the Church celebrates the common memory of the holy and God-bearing Fathers of the first six ecumenical councils. That being: The 318 holy Fathers of the 1st Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325 AD), which condemned the heresy of Arius; The 150 Holy Fathers of the 2nd Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (381 AD), when once again condemned the heresy of Arianism and Macedonius, and also the heresy of Apollinaris; The 200 holy Fathers of the 3rd Ecumenical Council of Ephesus (431 AD), which the condemned heretic Nestorius and his blasphemy of Christ; The 630 Holy Fathers of the 4th Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon (451AD), which convicted Dioscorus’ and Eutichius’ heretical teachings about Christ, and the so-called Monophysite heresy; The 165 Holy Fathers of the 5th Ecumenical Council in Constantinople (553 AD), which again condemned the Nestorian heresy and Monophysite and especially three of their followers, as well as teachings of Origen; The 170 Holy Fathers of the 6th Ecumenical Council in Constantinople (680-681 AD), where they condemned the  Monothelite heresy, as well as all previous heresies. We add here the Fathers of Council of Trullo, the so-called 5th-6th Council, in Constantinople (692 AD), whose 102 canons complement the work of the 5th and 6th Ecumenical Councils. Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, who well preserved the Apostolic Orthodox faith and by the Holy Spirit faithfully conveyed it to us, may the Lord Christ, as Head of His Church, grant us their zealous and truth-loving faith and salvation through their mediation. Amen.

I to: Spomen 318 Sv. Otaca Prvog Vaseljenskog Sabora u Nikeji (325 godine), koji osudiše bogohulnu jeres Arijevu; Svetih 150 Otaca Drugog Vaseljenskog Sabora u Carigradu (381 g.), kada bi ponovo osuđeno Arijanstvo i jeres Duhoboračka, a takođe i Apolinarijeva jeres; Spomen 200 Otaca svetog Trećeg Vaseljenskog Sabora u Efesu (431 g.), gde bi osuđen jeretik Nestorije i njegovo huljenje na Hrista; Spomen Svetih 630 Otaca Četvrtog Vaseljenskog Sabora u Halkidonu (451 g.), kada bi osuđeno Evtihijevo i Dioskorovo jeretičko učenje o Hristu, takozvana Monofizitska jeres; Spomen 165 Svetih Otaca Petog Vaseljenskog Sabora u Carigradu (553 g.), koji ponovo osudiše jeres Nestorijansku i Monofizitsku i posebno trojicu njihovih sledbenika, kao i zabludna učenja Origenova; Svetih 170 Otaca Šestog Vaseljenskog Sabora u Carigradu (680-681 g.), gde osuđena bi jeres Monotelitska, kao i sve ranije jeresi. Ovde treba dodati i Oce svetog Trulskog Sabora, takozvanog Petošestog, u Carigradu (692 godine), koji svojim donošenjem 102 sveta kanona dopuniše rad petog i šestog Vaseljenskog Sabora. Molitvama Svetih Otaca naših, koji Apostolsku veru Pravoslavnu dobro očuvaše i nama je verno predaše Duhom Svetim, neka Gospod Hristos, kao Glava Crkve Svoje, podari i nama revnosnu i istinoljubivu veru njihovu i spasenje posredovanjem njihovim. Amin.

Concerning the constant abiding with God, St. Anthony teaches: “Let your soul abide with the Lord at all times, and let your body abide on earth as a statue. Always stand upright before the face of the Lord. Let the fear of God always be before your eyes; and in like manner, remembrance of death, repulsion of everything worldly. Die every day that you may live; for whoever fears God will live forever. Be constantly vigilant so not to fall into laziness and idleness. Abhor all that is worldly and distance yourself from it or else it will distance you from God. Abhor all that will bring ruin to your soul. Do not deviate from God for the sake of transient things. Do not accept the example of one weaker than yourself rather from the one who is more perfect. Before all else continually pour out prayer, give thanks to God for all that would befall you. If you would fulfill all that is commanded, you will receive the inheritance ‘What the eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart what God has prepared’ ” (1 Corinthians 2:9). CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

O neprestanom prebivanju s Bogom sv.

You Fought the Good Fight”

Last week, our St. Stephen parish hosted 31 students from our Church School program. They participated in our annual summer Day Camp, which consisted of daily lessons and fun activities. The theme this year was Martyrs: Standing up for Jesus. This is the same theme that our Church overnight camps (like Shadeland) will be studying. Among the saints and martyrs studied were St. Stephen, St. George and St. Demetrius, all of them martyrs. The concept of martyrs as witnesses was emphasized, and the children learned how being a true witness to Christ’s earthly mission was indeed “Standing up for Jesus!” Through the week. the children practiced the Troparion to St. Stephen, which we sing in Church each Sunday. They enjoyed outings to the Buffalo Zoo, to Mini-Golf, and to Fantasy Island.

The children talked about how they could stand up for Jesus in their own young lives, and it was agreed that knowing their faith was the best way to witness of Christ. Education is a critical part of being a faithful Orthodox Christian. It cements the faith in the heart of the believer, and it gives them knowledge and understanding so they can indeed be a true witness to our Lord.

Our thanks go to parents and other volunteers who worked so hard to make this Day Camp week a success. Drivers, cooks, chaperones, volunteers for making crafts, and teachers all made it possible for these children to learn about and experience our Holy Orthodox Faith.

THE VENERABLE THOMAS OF MALEA

At first, Thomas was a commander distinguished by his bravery and wealth. He was a very massive individual and instilled fear in his enemies. But when Thomas fell in love with Christ more than the world and everything in the world, he left all and withdrew into the wilderness where he was tonsured a monk and gave himself up to a life of strict asceticism. St. Elijah the Prophet appeared to him and led him to a mountain called Malea next to Athos, the Holy Mountain. There he lived alone and isolated only with God, in prayer day and night. Even though he concealed himself from the world, he could not remain hidden. Upon learning about the sanctity of his life, men began to come to him and to bring their sick. St. Thomas cured men from every infirmity and affliction. When he presented himself to the Lord in the tenth century, his relics continued to help all those who approached them with faith.

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

Prepodobni Toma Malein.

Ovaj Toma beše najpre vojvoda, proslavljen hrabrošću i bogatstvom. Beše telom vrlo krupan, i zadavaše strah neprijateljima svojim. No kad zavoli Hrista više od sveta i svega u svetu, on ostavi sve i povuče se u pustinju, gde se zamonaši i preda podvigu. Sv. Ilija prorok javi mu se i odvede ga na goru zvanu Malea, do Svete Gore. Tu on življaše jedan i usamljen, samo s Bogom, u danonoćnoj molitvi. I sv.

“Be not envious of evil men” (Proverbs 24:1).

Does anyone envy the leper? No one envies him. Why then do some envy the evil man when evil is a greater sickness than leprosy? Leprosy is a disease of the flesh but evil is a disease of the soul. A leper can be healthy within while he is unhealthy on the outside. However, the evil man can be healthy on the outside but his interior is ill, his heart is sick. Greater value has a tree that is sick on the outside but has a healthy core than a tree that is healthy on the outside but has a rotten core. Thus, leprosy is a lesser evil than evil i.e., than sin. Because under evil, the All-wise One thought of sin as evil.

Does the physician envy the sick person? He does not envy him. Neither does the righteous one envy the sinner. If you do not know whether you are righteous examine your heart: do you envy the sinner? If you envy the sinner then you are not righteous; if you do not envy the sinner, then rejoice, O righteous one of God. The sick person can envy the healthy one, but the healthy person does not envy the sick person. Neither does the righteous envy the sinner. A physician recognizes a fatal illness of his patient and, knowing that, he pities him but does not envy him. The righteous one recognizes the sickness of sin, horrifying and deadly, and does not envy the sinner but pities him.

O good and compassionate Lord, uproot envy from our hearts and implant love.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, Prolog

Tebi slava i hvala vavek. Amin.

THE HOLY VIRGN-MARTYR AGRIPPINA

Saint Agrippina was born and educated in Rome. From her childhood she trained herself to live an evangelical life, driving away the stench of passions from her heart and filling her heart with the sweet-smelling fragrance of purity, of virginity and chastity. She was betrothed to Christ the Lord and, as the Bride of Christ, suffered during the reign of Emperor Valerian. She endured flogging with rods until her bones were crushed. An angel of God appeared to her and strengthened her. While being tortured, St. Agrippina gave up her soul to God. Her companions, Bassa, Paula and Agathonice, translated her relics to the island of Sicily and honorably buried them there. A church was later built there in St. Agrippina’s honor. Countless miracles were wrought from her relics. By the power of her relics, even the Hagarians were turned away from the town where her relics reposed. St. Agrippina rested in the year 275 A.D. and was crowned with glory.

Prologue, Holy Bishop Nikolaj

Sveta mučenica Agripina.

Agripina sveta beše rođena i vaspitana u Rimu. On njenih moštiju bivahu čudesa bezbrojna. Silom njenih moštiju čak i Agarjani behu vraćeni od grada, gde te mošti počivahu. Upokojila se i slavom uvenčala 275. godine.

Second Prayer Before Holy Communion

St. John Chrysostom

I am not worthy, O Lord and Master, that Thou should enter under the roof of my soul; but since Thou in Thy love for men dost will to dwell in me, I take courage and approach. Thou commandest: I will open wide the doors which Thou alone didst create, that Thou mayest enter with love as is Thy nature, enter and enlighten my darkened thought. I believe that Thou wilt do this, for Thou didst not banish the Harlot who approached Thee with tears, nor didst Thou reject the Publican who repented, nor didst Thou drive away the Thief who acknowledged Thy Kingdom, nor didst Thou leave the repentant persecutor (Paul) to himself; but all who had been brought to Thee by repentance Thou didst set in the company of Thy friends, O Thou Who alone art blessed always, now and to endless ages. Amen.

miracles of the changes of heart

In enumerating the miracles of the Christian Faith we need never forget the countless and great miracles of the changes of heart and dispositions of people truly converted to the Faith. How many are the enraged criminals that this Faith tamed! How many bloodthirsty robbers has the Faith transformed to innocent lambs! How many debauched ones has the Faith turned into chaste ones! How many persecuters has the Faith turned into defenders of the Faith! How many selfish avaricious men has the Faith taught compassion! How many fearful ones has the Faith directed on the road to extreme self-sacrifice!

Metropolitan Philaret writes about Russian Prince Vladimir: “A lover of all pleasures; how this was not possible any longer for the pagan Vladimir in Christianity and he became a model of a chaste married life; he dismissed all women and lovers and lived with one, the devout Anna. An evil, vindictive and bloodthirsty fratricide in paganism, Vladimir, in Christianity, was the most compassionate friend of the poor. The poor always had access to him and he distributed both money and food with a generous hand.” More than that: “the sick are unable to come to my palace,” said he and ordered that meat, fish, bread, yeast and honey be carted about the streets. The Gospel words: “Blessed are the merciful” (St. Matthew 5:7), penetrated into the depth of his heart and became his rule of life.

čudesa promene srca

Nabrajajući čudesa vere hrišćanske, mi ne treba nikad da zaboravljamo bezbrojna i velika čudesa promene srca i naravi ljudi, istinski obraćenih u veru. Koliko je jarosnih zločinaca ova vera upitomila! Koliko krvožednih razbojnika preobratila u nezlobne jaganjce!

READINGS FOR Today 3rd Sunday after Pentecost/Nedelja 3 po Duhovima

Romans 5:1-10; Gospel: St. Matthew 6:22-33

SAINT TIKHON, BISHOP OF AMATHUS

Saint Tikhon was a miracle-worker. Following the death of Blessed Mnemonius, Tikhon was unanimously elected a bishop and consecrated by the renowned Epiphanius for the Diocese of Amathus. His purity of life and zeal for Orthodoxy recommended him for this office. There were still pagans on Cyprus at that time. With apostolic zeal St. Tikhon undertook to convert the unbelievers into believers. In that, he had great success. After lengthy labor in the vineyard of the Lord, Tikhon took up habitation in blessed eternity about the year 425 A.D. He was called a miracle-worker because of the many miracles he worked during his life. Tikhon’s father was a baker. When his father left him alone in the store, he would distribute bread free of charge to the poor. Once, his father reproached him for this. Tikhon prayed to God and their granary was so filled with wheat that the door could not be opened without difficulty. Again, at another time, he planted withered branches of a vine and the vine became green and, in due time, brought forth fruit.

Prologue, Holy Bishop Nikolaj

Sveti Tihon, episkop amatuntski.

I imađaše on u tome velikog uspeha.

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

While I take my daily walk

While I take my daily walk, I try to combine physical and spiritual exercise through prayer. One of the best prayers to use during a walk is the Jesus Prayer: “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” I try to say the prayer as the spiritual fathers of the Church taught us, with the taking of each breath. Say the first part—Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God—when inhaling, and the second part—have mercy on me, a sinner—when exhaling. Thus with each breath and each step I try to connect my body and soul with God. God spiritually feeds and waters us through the Jesus Prayer. Of course my mind wanders sometimes, but then I bring my chaotic thoughts back through the prayer, by starting my prayer anew. Another benefit of this type of exercise is that I never feel alone when I take my walks, because Jesus Christ, the Sone of God, is with me when I call on Him, and converse with Him, in my prayer.
