What does it mean to bear witness to our Faith?

In one of the talks he gave toward the end of his life, Fr. Seraphim Rose said: “Once we are learning of the Orthodox Faith, we must be ready, as the Apostle Peter teaches, to give an account of it to those who may ask (cf. I Peter 3:15). Nowadays there is no one who is not asked at some time about his Faith. We must make our Faith something deep, conscious, and serious, so that we ourselves know why we are Orthodox — and this will already be an answer to those outside the Faith.

“And further, in our times of searching, we should be on the watch for those who are searching. We should be prepared to find them in the most unexpected places. We should be evangelical? — and this does not mean just sticking Bible verses into one’s conversation or asking everyone, ‘Are you saved?’ It means living by the Gospel, even with all our weaknesses and faults — living the Orthodox Faith. Many outsiders, just seeing that we try to lead a life different from the pagan and semi-pagan society around us, can become interested in the Faith just by this.”

To illustrate this last point, I will relate a few stories. In the early history of our brotherhood, some Orthodox pilgrims were on their way home from our monastery, when they stopped at a restaurant in Williams, California. Before the meal, they crossed themselves and prayed aloud. Some people at an adjacent table asked them what Faith they belonged to. They struck up a friendship with the Orthodox pilgrims, and went on to become Orthodox Christians themselves.

Just by doing such a simple things as making the sign of the Cross and praying, one can change the lives of those who are looking for something authentic in Christianity.

READINGS FOR Today 2nd Sunday after Pentecost/Nedelja 2 po Duhovima

Romans 2:10-16; Gospel: St. Matthew 4:18-23

Šta to znači svedočiti našu veru?

Morning Prayer During the Apostles’ Fast

O Lord as we begin this Fast Day in honor of and in preparation for the memorial of Thy Holy Apostles, as Thou didst emphasize to Thy disciples that prayer and fasting are necessary for discipleship, so also instill that knowledge in us, that by refraining from earthly interests and desires as we refrain from certain foods, while increasing in prayer and charitable acts, we may prepare ourselves to imitate them in revealing Thee to the Nations by our words and deeds. For Thou art the God Who grants to each according to his talents and ability, and to Thee we give glory, together with Thine unoriginal Father and Thine all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Remembering a Father on Father’s Day

This excerpt is from the Elder Sophrony’s St. Silouan the Athonite.

Young, strong, handsome, and by this time prosperous, too, Simeon [later to become the monk Silouan] revelled in life. He was popular in the village, being good-natured, peaceable and jolly, and the village girls looked on him as a man they would like to marry. He himself was attracted to one of them and, before the question of marriage had been put, what so often happens befell late one summer evening.

Next morning, as they were working together, his father said to him quietly,

‘Where were you last night, son? My heart was troubled for you?’

The mild words sank into Simeon’s soul, and in later life when he recalled his father the Staretz [elder] would say,

‘I have never reached my father’s stature. He was absolutely illiterate – he even used to make mistakes in the Lord’s Prayer which he had learned by listening in church; but he was a man who was gentle and wise.’

They were a large family – father, mother, five sons and two daughters – all living in affection together. The elder boys worked with their father. One Friday they were out harvesting and it was Simeon’s turn to cook the midday meal. Forgetting that it was Friday, he prepared a dish of pork for their lunch, and they all ate of it. Six months later, on a feast-day in winter, Simeon’s father turned to him with a gentle smile and said,

‘Son, do you remember how you gave us pork to eat that day in the fields? It was a Friday. I ate it but, you know, it tasted like carrion [decayed animal flesh].’

‘Whyever didn’t you tell me at the time?’

‘I didn’t want to upset you, son.’

Recalling such incidents from his life at home, the Staretz would add,

‘That is the sort of staretz I would like to have. He never got angry, was always even-tempered and humble. Just think – he waited six months for the right moment to correct me without upsetting me!’

Thoughts on the Saints

by Fr. Rodney Torbic

The saints of God’s Holy Church live with a commitment to Christ which is certain and recognizable. Every person choosing to following Christ determines the degree of personal commitment to Christ.

When Christ is primary in life, all else is in proper perspective. The personal relationship with Christ determines the way a person relates with others and the way a person perceives the self and the materialistic world.

We learn from the lives of the saints that faithfulness to Christ was dominant in their lives particularly at critical moments of life. Every moment of life is a critical moment.

The road to the Kingdom of God is difficult and full of perils. The saints point the way to follow Christ. The saints serve as certain examples showing that following Christ completely is entirely possible.

The saints serve as beacons of hope. The saints radiate the light of Christ.

The saints demonstrate their love of Christ. The saints reflect Christ’s love and mercy in their lives.

Pentecost

The Jewish feast of Pentecost is a feast of nature and the cosmos, a feast of history as the revelation to Moses of God’s will for the world and human beings, a fest of future triumph, of God’s victory over evil and the coming of the great and last “day of the Lord.” All this must be kept in mind in order to grasp how the first Christians experienced, understood, and celebrated their feast of Pentecost, and why it became one of the most important Christian celebrations.

The Book of Acts, devoted to recounting the history of the first Christians and the initial spread of Christianity, starts precisely with the day of Pentecost, describing what took place fifty days after Christ’s resurrection and ten days after his ascension into heaven. Just before his ascension Christ had told the disciples “not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which he said, ‘you heard from me…’” So in ten days, according to St. Luke’s account,

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance… And all who heard were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But other mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” (Acts 2:1-4, 12-13)

To those witnesses who remained skeptical, the apostle Peter explained the meaning of the event using the words of the prophet Joel, “This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel,” he said, “And in the last days it shall be. God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh…’” (Acts 2:16,17).

For the Christian, therefore, the feast of Pentecost is the completion of all that Christ accomplished. Christ taught about the Kingdom of God, and here it is, now opened! Christ promised that the Spirit of God would reveal the truth, and now this is fulfilled. The world, history, life, time, are all illumined with the final, transcendent light—all are filled with ultimate meaning. The last and great day of the Lord has begun!

READINGS FOR Today Pentecost/Duhovi

Acts 2:1-11; Readers: Jason Delmont & Milica Gavric Gospel: St. John 7:37-52, 8:12

Pedesetnica

The commemoration of the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council

The commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council is made on the Sunday before Pentecost, or the seventh Sunday after Pascha, which is why it is called Sunday of the Holy Fathers.

This holy Council was held in the city of Nicaea , in Bithynia, in Asia Minor, 325 at the time of St. Constantine the Great (305-337). This Council was called to remove the confusion of the false teaching created by Arius, a priest of Alexandria. He distorted the teaching saying that the Lord Christ, the Son of God, is not really God, but was created in time by God, and therefore is not the pre-eternal Son of God, equal in essence and being with God the Father.

The Emperor Constantine called all the bishops to the city of Nicaea in May in the year 325. This Council was attended by about 318 Holy Fathers. The Council condemned the Arian teaching and Arius and his supporters were issued anathemas, as neither he nor they would repent.

Then the Ecumenical Council, with divine wisdom, presented and expressed the one true faith of Christ’s Church regarding Him as the real and eternal Son of God and God, which the Church received from the beginning from the Lord and the Apostles. Succinctly expressed, that faith in the Holy Trinity, the Son of God and His incarnation for our salvation, is called the Creed, and the main job of this Council was the confirmation of that one, unique Creed for all believers.

Spomen svetih otaca Prvog vaseljenskog sabora

READINGS FOR Today 6th Sunday after Pascha/The Blind Man

Acts 20:16-18, 28-36; Reader: Vanja Pavlovic Gospel: St. John 17:1-13

Proportionate Giving

The Old Testament laid down the standard of the tithe or 10 percent of one’s income. This provides us with the principle that giving should be a proportion of our income. Stewardship is giving back to God in proportion to the resources He has given to us. The more we are given, the more is expected of us. “Everyone to whom much is given, from him will much be required.” (Luke 12:48) Each Steward should determine what percentage of his or her income will be committed to Christ and the Church each year.

READINGS For Next Sunday: Epistle: Acts 2:1-11; Gospel: St. John 7:37-52, 8:12.

CHRIST IS ASCENDED! — INDEED HE IS ASCENDED!

Racionalno davanje
