Ascension

Who descended from heaven to earth? God. Who ascended from earth to heaven? The man Jesus. St. Athanasius the Great says that “God became man so that man could become God.” God came down to earth so that we might ascend to heaven! This is what the Ascension celebrates! The is the source of its brightness and unspeakable joy. If Christ is in heaven, and if we believe in him and love him, then we also are there with him, at his banquet, in his Kingdom. If humanity ascends through him, and does not fall, then through him, I also have access to ascension and am called to him, And in him the goal, meaning and ultimate joy of my life is revealed to me.

Everything, everything around us pulls us down. But I look at the divine flesh ascending to heaven, at Christ going up “with the sound of a trumpet,” and I say to myself and to the world: here is the truth about the world and humanity, here is the life to which God calls from all eternity.

Completing Your whole plan for us
Uniting earth to heaven
You ascended in glory, O Christ God
not parting at all,
But ever remaining
And saying to those who love You:
I am with you and no one will be against you….

From a sermon by Fr.. Alexander Schmemann

Vaznesenje

No, s nama neodstupno prebivaš

Cheerful Giving

“Each person should give what he had decided in this heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful (willing) giver”(2 Corinthians 9:7). How do you compare your expenditure on personal entertainment to your giving for God’s work? Our Stewardship giving reflects our commitment to Christ and His Church.

The Samaritan Woman

When Christ the Heavenly Bridegroom saw what she (the Samaritan Woman) was like, He said to her, “I that speak unto Thee am he.” She immediately became a chosen bearer of the Good Tidings, left her water pot, ran to the city, drew everyone’s attention with her words, and led them toward faith in Him whom she had seen, saying, “Come, see a man who told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” (John 4:29) She did not speak in this way because she harbored any doubts, but because she believed that others too would find fuller assurance by seeing the Lord, and would be more easily convinced by speaking to Him, as in fact happened.

Think about this Samaritan woman. As soon as she heard the words of the Gospel, which we too proclaim to your charity, she immediately despised her body’s necessites. Straighaway she left her water pot and her house, ran to the city and, having persuaded the Samaritans, returned with them to Christ. The words “Come, see,” actually mean, “Follow me and I shall lead you and show you now the Savior who has come into the world.”

St. Gregory Palamas

Žena Samarjanka

Videvši sve to, Nebeski Ženik joj otvoreno kaže: ”Ja sam Koji švori s tobom” (Jn. 4; 26). Da nije On Hristos?” (Jn. 4; 29).

Razmislite o ovoj Samarjanki.

ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP

In the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom we hear the call to “commit ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.” We commit our whole life to Christ when we truly believe that He is the source of our life and origin of all our blessings. Stewardship is our proper response to His gifts to us. In gratitude and thanksgiving, we give back of our Time, Talents, and Treasure in proportion to what we have been given.

First Fruits The Bible speaks of offering back to God the “first fruits” of our possessions, thus recognizing Him as the provider of all we are and all we have. Stewardship is making Christ the first priority in the use of the time, talents and treasures with which He has blessed us.

READINGS For Next Sunday: Epistle: Acts 16:16-34; Gospel: St. John 9:1-38.

Remembered at the Litany for the Departed today are PAUL WEAVER (requested by the Weaver family); ALEKSANDRA LAZAREVSKI; BENJAMIN SAUER (requested by Tonika Todorovich); all the departed mothers whose names arrived too late for last Sunday’s commemorations; all the victims of the flooding in Serbia and Bosnia, and all victions of violence and natural disasters. May their memory be eternal!

As Bishop Mitrophan states in his appeal, all contributions will be sent to the Diocese and forwarded to the affected areas as soon as possible. Bishop Mitrophan’s appeal will be mailed to everyone with a return envelope, so that all may have the option of mailing their donation to the church.

SPECIAL PETITIONS for the cessation of rain in Serbia and Bosnia are being read today at the Great Litany and the Litany of Fervent Supplicaiton.

Prayers in the paschal season  From Pascha to Ascension the prayer “O Heavenly King” is replaced by the Paschal Troparion “Christ is risen from the dead.”

From a Mother’s Day Sermon

The Mother of God stood at the foot of the Cross, the prototype of mothers whose pain and loss is profound (John 19:25). In hardship and in joy, Christ is present. Jesus looked to His mother from the Cross and provided for her by uniting her with His beloved disciple.

At His darkest hour, Jesus said, “Woman, behold your son!” He said to the beloved disciple, “Behold your mother!” From the Holy Gospel according to Saint John, we know that the beloved disciple took Mary to his home (John 19:26-27). The Mother of God had the unique perspective of being with Jesus from His birth to His death. This relationship between the Mother of God and her Son has been the focus of interest and veneration for centuries.

Sons and daughters are challenged by the expectations and teachings of their mothers. Sons and daughters are inspired by the qualities which are inherent in their mothers. At the Cross, Mary did not abandon her Son. Nor did Jesus abandon His mother. How many times have we heard accounts of the hardest of criminals being supported and portrayed in the good light of their mothers? It does us well to remember that Jesus died between two criminals and His mother was present to show her support.

We must view Mother’s Day in the context of the Church. Our world-view must be contemporary and yet linear, reaching back to the earliest of times. We are in the twentieth century celebrating Mother’s Day. God has given us many mothers through the centuries for whom we must be grateful.

Together with God, our own mothers have helped to form and shape us. We are created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). Mothers have been chosen by God to participate in this creativity.

We go through life, often not realizing the full stature of mothers in the role they play in the development of civilization. Taking time on Mother’s Day to reflect on the far-reaching impact of mothers is healthy for all of us.

Indeed, our own mothers are forever in our hearts and minds. They are the subject of our fondest thoughts. When we are young, we treasure our mothers. As we get older, we know the treasure to be even greater than we ever imagined.

Let us take time to give thanks to God for the mothers He has given us and for the special role He has chosen for them to be a partner in His creation.

MOTHERS DAY COMMEMORATIONS  Due to the renovation of the interior of the Church this week, we were late in sending out the mailing for Mothers Day Commemoration. Any of you who wish to submit names in the coming week, we will remember them at the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, May 18.

WORK BEING DONE IN THE CHURCH We received word last week that work would begin on the interior of the Church immediately. Pews are being sanded and varnished, the floor is being prepared for the new vinyl tiles, the stairs leading to the Altar are completed, and the new carpeting will be installed. This is all a part of the Fresco Project. Designated funds for the renovation of the interior of the Church were used to complete this project. God willing, this will soon be finished, and a date can be set for the blessing of the frescoes. “O Lord, look down and behold, and visit this Vineyard, which you have planted with your Holy Right Hand.”

Return to God His Own Gifts

King David said, “all things come from You, and of Your own we have given You” (Chronicles 29:14). Our money and possessions are not ours, but on loan from God. When we give to the Church, we return to God, the Owner, His rightful portion.

Vraćanje Bogu onoga što nam je On dao

Kada dajemo Crkvi mi vraćamo Bogu , Vlasniku, Njegov deo.

The Myrrhbearing Women

They stood at the Cross only because they loved Jesus, and in loving him, suffered with him. They did not leave his poor, tortured body, but did all that love has always done at final separation.

Those whom Christ had asked to stay with him at the hour of his agonizing struggle, when He “began to be greatly distressed and troubled” (MK. 14:33), dropped him, ran away and renounced him. But those from whom he asked nothing remained faithful in their simple human love. “Mary stood weeping outside the tomb” (JN. 20:11). Down through the centuries, love has always wept in this way, as Christ wept at the grave of his friend Lazarus. Here then, it is this love, which first learns of the victory; this love, this faithfulness is the first to know that there is no longer any need for weeping, for “death is swallowed up in victory” (I COR. 15:54), and hopeless separation is no more.

This is what the Sunday of the Myrrhbearing Women means. It reminds us that the love and faithfulness of a few individuals shone brightly in the midst of hopeless darkness. It calls us to ensure that in this world love and faithfulness do not disappear or die out. It judges our lack of courage, our fear, our endless and servile rationalizations. The mysterious Joseph and Nicodemus, and these women who go to the grave at dawn, occupy so little space in the gospels. Precisely here, however, is where the eternal fate of each of us is decided.”

Human history has rumbled along, kingdoms have risen and fallen, cultures have been built and bloody wars fought, but what has remained unchanging on earth and in this troubled and tragic history is the bright image of the woman. An image of care, self-giving, love, compassion. Without this presence, without this light, regardless of its successes and accomplishments, would be a world of terror. And if, despite all the evil that dominates the world, the mysterious feast of life still continues, if it is still celebrated in a poverty-stricken room, at a barren table, just as joyously as in a palace, then the joy and light of this feast is in her, in woman, in her never-fading love and faithfulness.

Celebration of Faith, Vo. 2.

READINGS FOR Today 3rd Sunday after Pascha/Myrrhbearers/Mironosice

Epistle: Acts 6:1-7;   Gospel: Mark 15:43-16:8

“A Marija stajaše kraj groba plačući.”

Taj njihov izlazak sudi našem malodušju, našem strahu, našem večitom i ropskom samoopravdavanju.

Lik njihove brige, samožrtvene vernosti, ljubavi i sastradanja.

The Great Visitor

Many times Christ comes and knocks on your door and you have Him sit in the living room of your soul, and you, preoccupied with your chores, forget about the Great Visitor.

He waits for your appearance. He waits and when you are very late, He gets up and leaves.

Another time you are so preoccupied that you answer Him from the window. You don’t even have time to open your door.
