The personal experience of all the apostles

“What we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked upon and touched with our hands—We proclaim now to you.” (1 St. John 1:1).

Behold, such is the apostolic preaching! The apostles do not speak as worldly sages, nor like philosophers and even less as theoreticians who make suppositions about something in order to discover something. The apostles speak about things which they have not sought but which unexpectedly surrounded them; about the fact which they did not discover but, so to speak, unexpectedly found them and seized them. They did not occupy themselves with spiritual researches nor have they studied psychology, neither did they, much less, occupy themselves with spiritism. Their occupation was fishing – one totally experiential physical occupation. While they were fishing, the God-Man [Jesus] appeared to them and cautiously and slowly introduced them to a new vocation in the service of Himself. At first, they did not believe Him but they, still more cautiously and slowly with fear and hesitation and much wavering, came toward Him and recognized Him. Until the apostles saw Him many times with their own eyes and until they discussed Him many times among themselves and, until they felt Him with their own hands, their experienced fact is supernatural but their method of recognizing this fact is thoroughly sensory and positively learned. Not even one contemporary scholar would be able to use a more positive method to know Christ. The apostles saw not only one miracle but numerous miracles. They heard not only one lesson but many lessons which could not be contained in numerous books. They saw the resurrected Lord for forty days; they walked with Him, they conversed with Him, they ate with Him, and they touched Him. In a word: they personally and first handedly had thousands of wondrous facts by which they learned and confirmed one great fact, i.e., that Christ is the God-Man, the Son of the Living God, the Man-loving Savior of mankind and the All-Powerful Judge of the living and the dead.

O resurrected Lord confirm us in the faith and ardor of Your Holy Apostles.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, “Prologue of Ohrid”

READINGS FOR Today 2nd Sunday after Pascha/Thomas Sunday/Tomina nedelja

Epistle: Acts 5:12-20;   Gospel: St.John 20:19-31

Dok nisu mnogo puta videli očima svojim, i dok nisu mnogo puta rasmotrili i rukama opipali.

O Gospode vaskrsli, utvrdi nas u veri i revnosti Tvojih svetih apostola. Tebi slava i hvala vavek. Amin.

2014 Vaskrsna poslanica

Srpska Pravoslavna Crkva

svojoj duhovnoj deci o Vaskrsu 2014. godine

I R I N E J

po milosti Božjoj pravoslavni Arhiepiskop pećki, Mitropolit beogradsko-karlovačke i Patrijarh srpski, sa svim arhijerejima Srpske Pravoslavne Crkve, sveštenstvu, monaštvu i svim sinovima i kćerima naše svete Crkve: blagodat, milost i mir od Boga Oca, i Gospoda našega Isusa Hrista, i Duha Svetoga, uz radosni vaskršnji pozdrav:

Hristos vaskrse – Vaistinu vaskrse!

Danas je proleće dušama našim:

Hristos iz groba kao sunce zasija,

Mračnu buru grehova naših odagna.

Njega pesmom veličajmo jer se proslavi!

(Pashalna bogoslužbena pesma)

Kada posle duge i hladne zime grane rano proleće, celokupna priroda i tvorevina Božja obraduje se suncu, njegovim toplim zracima i njegovoj energiji koja sve i sva, bez razlike, obasjava i greje. Tada sve slavi Gospoda, Davaoca sunca i proleća.

Među mnogim imenima kojima crkveni pesnici veličaju Hrista Vaskrsloga zapažamo i naziv Proleće. S pravom Ga tako nazivajujer Gospod Isus Hristos jeste Proleće našeg novog života. To nije slučajna pesnička konstrukcija.

Do Vaskrsenja Gospoda Isusa Hrista, odnosno do Njegovog prethodnog silaska u ad, bili smo u okovima zime greha i smrti u adu preispodnjem. Smrt je gospodarila nad nama. Sišavši u grob, On razruši ad, pokida okove greha i smrti i oslobodi nas. Objašnjavajući bogočovečansku tajnu silaska Hrista Spasitelja u grob, Njegovog boravka u njemu i Njegovog Vaskrsenja, sveti apostol Pavle likujući pita: Smrti, gde ti je žalac?

Toje iskustvenaveraApostola narodâ i Crkve Hristove.

Umesto radosti i vere, njih obuze strah i sumnja.

I nama On poručuje danas: Ne plašite se! Svepobednim i sveradosnim pozdravom Hristos vaskrse! još jedanput pozdravljamo sve vas, draga deco svetosavska u otadžbini i u rasejanju širom sveta. Vaskrs je praznik svepravoslavnog jedinstva i svehrišćanskog zajedništva. U ime Hrista Vaskrsloga pozivamo vas na jedinstvo i slogu u Crkvi Njegovoj.

Neka Vaskrsli Hristos Gospod pokida okove nepravde, bezakonja i licemerstva kojima sinovi bezakonja okovaše Arhiepiskopa ohridskog i Mitropolita skopskog g.Jovana koga preko nas pozdravlja čitava pravoslavna vaseljena i čitav pravdoljubivi svet.

Moleći se Vaskrslom Hristu Gospodu da vas ljubav Božja uvek i neprestano ispunjava, još jedanput vas srdačno pozdravljamo pozdravom važnijim od svakog drugog pozdrava:

Hristos vaskrse – vaistinu vaskrse!

2014 Paschal Encyclical

The Serbian Orthodox Church to her spiritual children at Pascha, 2014

I R I N E J

By the grace of God

Orthodox Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade-Karlovci and Serbian Patriarch, with the all the Hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church – to all the clergy, monastics, and all the sons and daughters of our Holy Church: grace, mercy and peace from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, with the joyous Paschal greeting:

CHRIST IS RISEN!    INDEED HE IS RISEN!

Today is the Spring-time of our souls,
For coming forth from the tomb, Christ shines like the sun,
Dispelling the gloom of our sins!
We sing out to Him, for gloriously has He been glorified!

(Paschal service hymn)

When an early spring arrives after a long and cold winter, all of nature and God’s creation rejoices in the sun and its warm rays and energy which illuminates and warms everything and all things without exception. Everything then glorifies the Lord, the Giver of sun and spring. So do we, dear brothers and sisters and our dear spiritual children, after a cold and terrible winter of sin, especially after the killing of the God-Man Jesus Christ on Holy Friday on Golgotha, seeing today the Resurrected Christ, do we joyfully exclaim and sing: Today is the Spring-time of our souls! Christ – the Sun of life from the East – has risen and shone from the tomb. He has expelled the dark storm of our sins!  Him let us magnify for He has been glorified! That is why we are joyful today, that is why together with the angels in heaven and with all people of this world do we gloriously sing: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.

Among the many names used by the Church hymnographers in praising the Resurrected Christ we notice the name Spring.  Rightly indeed they call Him so, for the Lord Jesus Christ is the Spring of our new life. That is not a coincidental poetic construction. Here it is not the spring as an annual season that we talk about; rather, it is a deep understanding of the meaning and significance of spring as the beginning of new life of nature and everything in it.

Until the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, that is, until His descent into Hades, we were chained in the winter of sin and death in the depths of Hades. Death had reigned over us. Having descended into the grave, He has destroyed Hades, He has shattered the chains of sin and death and has freed us. In explaining the God-human mystery of Christ the Savior’s descent into the tomb, His stay there and His Resurrection, the Holy Apostle Paul exclaims: Death, where is thy sting? O Hell, where is thy victory? Contained in the mystery of the Resurrection – that is, in the mystery of the Resurrected Lord Christ – is our victory over sin, death and the devil. That is why it was necessary that Christ become Emanuel (God is with us). It was necessary that He take upon Himself our entire human nature and indivisibly and without mingling unite it with divine nature in His single and unique Divine and Human Person, so that as the God-Man (Theanthropos) He might defeat Adam’s sin of disobedience to God the Father and destroy the consequences of the ancestral sin. The God-Man Christ, not only God or only Man, defeated Satan, sin and death! The mystery of this victory the Lord foretold even during His temptation following His baptism in the river Jordan, saying: “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” (Saint  Matthew 4:10)

Reminding you of these truths of the Gospel, we call you today, on this day of the Resurrection, to be in truth and in essence, communicants of the new and eternal Life, of the new and eternal Spring, Christ the Lord. “Let no one weep for his iniquities, for forgiveness has shown forth from the grave,” exclaims St. John Chrysostom. Let no one fear death any longer for from it the Savior has freed us. With His death on the Cross He has extinguished death and made free all those over whom it reigned. Today we celebrate the Resurrected Christ. We celebrate the death of death, we celebrate the destruction of Hades, we celebrate the beginning of new life, we celebrate Him Who is the Cause of all of that, the only blessed and most glorified One unto the ages of ages.

Our entire faith, hope and love is established upon the truth of the Resurrection of Christ the Savior, who with the Resurrection from the dead laid not only the cornerstone of His Church but also the faith of all of us who are baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe and confess Him “who rose again on the third day according to the Scripture.” Without the Resurrected Christ the Lord not only would our faith be empty but it would burst as the bubble made of soap. The Holy Apostle Paul who experienced the True and Resurrected Lord Jesus Christ in a special way concludes: “And if Christ is not risen, your [our] faith is in vain”. (I Corinthians 15:17) That is the faith experienced by the Apostle, the nations and the Church of Christ. May God grant that we also, experiencing today the Resurrected Christ, boldly and without fear sing: Christ is risen!

Unlike the Apostle Paul, the other Holy Apostles, who experienced the horror of Great and Holy Friday along with the Holy Myrrhbearing Women, experienced Christ’s Resurrection in a different manner. The news that Christ had risen and appeared to Cephas – that is, to the Apostle Peter – and “some of the women”, brought fear and trembling and some even began to doubt. Instead of joy and faith they were seized by fear and doubt. In doubting the news that the Teacher had risen the Apostle Thomas went the furthest when, with not much thought, he said: “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” (Saint John 20:25) It is nothing strange and unusual if we bear in mind the spiritual battles and sufferings that the Apostles underwent. The fearful judgment of Great and Holy Friday, the judgment of the God-Man Christ, had left behind even more dreadful consequences for the Holy Apostles and those who followed Him and those who hoped that He would free them of the Roman oppression. Their hope and faith dissipated watching His terrible judgment, watching how man, merciless and harsh, judges and to the cross crucifies their Teacher and the Savior of the world, the Lover of mankind.  Fear from within and fear from without, fear of the Sanhedrin, of Pontius Pilate, of the Jews, fear from everywhere! Fear had seized the disciples and apostles and they dispersed on all sides as sheep without a shepherd. Knowing well their hearts, their fear and their thoughts, the Lord comes into their midst revealing that He is risen and says: “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Saint John 16:33) and “do not doubt, but rather have faith!

Today He comes to us who are also frightened, dear brothers and sisters, frightened of the global world order and disorder, of great and small inquisitors, and of new Pilates, who once again judge and determine truth and justice and once more threaten God’s inheritance on earth with Golgotha. To us today He communicates this message: Do not be afraid! I have overcome the world! Recognizing Him by faith as the Victor over every sin and every death and injustice, let us have courage and not fear those who, not knowing what they are doing, still ask: “what is Truth?” But we, having experienced the Resurrected Lord as the Truth above all truths, having gathered around Him today on the spiritual Zion, glorify and praise Him for to Him come “all God-enlightened luminaries from the West and from the North of the sea, and from the East His children, glorifying Him through the centuries.” “Today is the day of the Resurrection, let us be illumined by the feast! sings the Church hymnographer, adding: “Let us embrace each other and let us say brothers to even those who hate us and let us forgive all by the Resurrection!” May the hymn and glorification of Christ who glorified us flow from our voices and our hearts. With the all-victorious and all-joyous greeting Christ is risen! we greet you all one more time, dear children of St. Sava in our homeland and those throughout the world. The Resurrection is the Feast of Orthodox unity and the feast of all-Christian fellowship. In the name of the Resurrected Christ we call all to oneness and unity in His Church. He who is not in communion with the Church, which He has bought with His blood, is not with Him – with Christ the Lord. Without Christ there is no Church, and the Church is never without Christ. That is why without the Church there is no salvation. Outside the Church there is only the lonely “autonomous” man without a home, with his disobedience to God and His Church, with his egoism and opposition to the Holy Spirit like Adam expelled from Paradise. Such people the Lord Himself calls the doors of hell which will not prevail against the Church.

We especially greet our suffering brothers and sisters in Kosovo and Metohija who, despite being discriminated and in the chains of captivity, celebrate with us today the victory of Good over evil, Life over death, Christ Resurrected over the demonic powers of darkness.

With the same love in the Resurrected Christ the Lord and with warm prayers we greet today all our brothers and sisters in Dalmatia and Lika, Kordun, Banija, Slavonija and Baranja.

With Christ is risen! we also greet all of our brothers and sisters in Republika Srpska, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovenia and the former Republic of Yugoslavia – Macedonia, most especially the latter ones  who at the forefront with their unjustly imprisoned Archbishop suffer for the unity of the Church and for the purity of the Orthodox Faith.

We pray especially today to the Conqueror of sin, death and human injustice for our brothers and sisters in Christ the Lord in the Middle East, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine, with wishes and prayers that the light of Christ’s Resurrection dispel the darkness of sin which hovers over Ukraine, that it may enlighten the minds and souls of the sowers of hatred towards Holy Orthodoxy and the Russian Orthodox people.

May the Resurrected Christ our Lord shatter the chains of injustice, unlawfulness and hypocrisy with which the sons of lawlwssness have bound the Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropolitan of Skoplje Kyrr Jovan who through us greets the entire Orthodox and justice-loving world.

Praying to the Resurrected Christ our Lord that the love of God always and incessantly fill your entire being, we once again greet you wholeheartedly with the greeting more important than any other greeting:

Christ is Risen!    Indeed He is Risen!

Paschal Greetings from Patriarch Irinej

When an early spring arrives after a long and cold winter, all of nature and God’s creation rejoices in the sun and its warm rays and energy which illuminates and warms everything and all things without exception. Everything then glorifies the Lord, the Giver of sun and spring. So do we, dear brothers and sisters and our dear spiritual children, after a cold and terrible winter of sin, especially after the killing of the God-Man Jesus Christ on Holy Friday on Golgotha, seeing today the Resurrected Christ, do we joyfully exclaim and sing: Today is the Spring-time of our souls! That is why we are joyful today, that is why together with the angels in heaven and with all people of this world do we gloriously sing: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.

Vaskrsni pozdrav od patrijarha Irineja

Kada posle duge i hladne zime grane rano proleće, celokupna priroda i tvorevina Božja obraduje se suncu, njegovim toplim zracima i njegovoj energiji koja sve i sva, bez razlike, obasjava i greje. Tada sve slavi Gospoda, Davaoca sunca i proleća.

CHRIST IS RISEN

If there are devout and God loving people here, let them enjoy this beautiful, radiant festival. If there are prudent servants, enter joyously into the Lord’s joy. Whoever may be spent from fasting, enjoy now your reward. Whoever has toiled from the first hour, receive today your just settlement. If any came after the third hour, celebrate gratefully. If any of you arrived after the sixth, have no misgivings, you have lost nothing. If some have been as late as the ninth, come forward, do not be at a loss. If any of you have arrived only at the eleventh hour, do not be dismayed for being late.

The Master is gracious: He accepts the last even as the first; He gives rest to those of the eleventh as well as to those who have labored from the first; He is lenient with the last while looking after the first; to the one He gives, to the other He gives freely; He accepts the labors and welcomes the effort; honors the deed, but commends the intent. So, all of you, enter into the joy of our Lord: first and second, share the bounty. Rich and poor alike, celebrate together. Sober or heedless, honor the day. Those who fasted and those who did not, rejoice today. The table is full, everyone fare sumptuously. The calf is fatted; no one go away hungry. Everyone, savor the banquet of faith; relish the riches of His goodness.

Christ is risen! — Indeed he is risen!

I poslednjeg miluje i prvoga dvori; i onome daje, i ovome daruje; i dela prima, i nameru celiva; i delanje ceni, i prinos hvali.

Vaskrse Hristos, i ad se stropošta! Vaskrse Hristos, i padoše demoni. Vaskrse Hristos, i raduju se anđeli! Vaskrse Hristos, i život živuje! Vaskrse Hristos, i nijednog mrtvog u grobu! Jer Hristos, ustavši iz mrtvih, postade prvina preminulih. Njemu slava i vlast kroza sve vekove. Amin!

Palm Sunday

Come, O faithful, let us pass from one holy feast to another!

Let us hasten from the palms and branches to the solemn celebration of Christ’s saving Passion!

We shall see Him voluntarily suffer for our sake!

Let us offer Him a fitting hymn of thanksgiving: “Fountain of tender mercy and haven of salvation,

O Lord, glory to You!”

The Palm Sunday Evening Vesper service includes many hymns that reflect upon Christ and His entry from Palm Sunday to Holy Week. When reading the above hymn, we are drawn to the words voluntary, suffer and Salvation. Jesus Christ died for our sins – He died on the Cross for our Salvation. He did this voluntarily and suffered for all the sins that were committed in this world. Why, then, do we question Stewardship or the care and support of our Church when we so visibly can see what Christ went through for us? Do we voluntarily give of our Time, Talents and Treasures? Do we suffer to help our parish like Christ suffered? Do we reflect upon our own Salvation and the fact that we will be judged by Jesus based upon our works and what we have done with what God has provided for us?

By His bruise, we are healed! (Is.53:5)

Cvetna Nedelja
