The Righteous Joseph

Then Joseph her husband, being a just man … did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him (Matthew 1:19, 24).

One must fear God more than men, and one must obey God more than men. This is the lesson from the life of the Righteous Joseph, the kinsman and guardian of the Holy Virgin Mary. He lived at the time of the juncture between the Law and grace, and was faithful to the Law until grace appeared; then, when the new grace of God appeared, he became faithful to grace. Obedient to the letter of the Law, he wanted to put the Holy Virgin away when she conceived the Savior of the world in her most pure body. But when an angel of God announced to him that Mary had conceived of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20), he abandoned his intention and did not put her away, but did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him. He did not reason for himself, but obeyed the will of God. Therefore, God made him worthy of great glory, both on earth and in heaven. Quietly and secretly he served God, and God glorified him openly. Not only was he made worthy of the Kingdom of God but also his sons and daughters were. What father would want anything more than that his son would be an apostle of Christ? And Joseph, a widower, had two sons who were apostles. Thus, God glorifies those who fear Him and obey Him.

O Pravednom Josifu

Josif muž pravedan… učini kako mu zapovjedi angel Gospodnji (Mateja 1,19,24)

Treba se bojati Boga više nego ljudi, i treba slušati Boga više nego ljude. To je nauk života pravednoga Josifa, srodnika i zaštitnika Svete Deve Marije. On življaše na prekretu između zakona i blagodati, i beše veran zakonu, dok se ne javi blagodat; a kad se javi nova blagodat Božija, on posta veran blagodati. Poslušan slovu zakona on htede oterati Svetu Devu, kad ova zače u prečistom telu svome Spasitelja sveta,no kad mu angel Božiji javi, da je Marija začela od Duha svetoga, on se trže od svoje namere, i ne otera je nego učini kako mu zapovedi angel Gospodnji. On ne rasuđivaše ništa od sebe nego slušaše volju Božiju. Zato ga udostoji Gospod slave velike i na zemlji i na nebu. Tiho o tajno on posluži Bogu, a Bog ga proslavi javno. I ne samo da se on udostoji carstva Božijeg, nego i sinovi i kćeri. Koji bi otac želeo nešto više nego da mu sin bude apostol Hristov? A Josif, udovac, imaše dva sina apostola. Tako Bog proslavlja one, koji se Njega boje i Njega slušaju.

O Gospode veliki, Bože pravednoga Josifa, pomozi i nama grešnima pravdu tvoju ljubiti i Tebe se jedinoga bojati, Tebi slava i hvala vavek. Amin.

READINGS FOR Sunday 28th Sunday after Pentecost/ Holy Fathers

Epistle: Heb. 11:9-10, 17-23, 32-40. Readers: Jason & Taylor Delmont Gospel: St. Matt. 1:1-25.

Welcome, O Christ! (part 2)

Out of burning love, O King of all beauty,

Thou didst leave the radiance of the beautiful Cherubim,

Thou didst descend into the cave of human life,

To despairing men, with a torch and peace.

How to contain Thee?-The earth became frightened.

Welcome, O Christ! Heaven bears Thee up!

The most beautiful Virgin for a long time hoped in Thee.

The earth raises her to Thee, that through her Thou wilt descend

From the lofty throne, from the heavenly city,

To bring health, to release man from sin.

O Holy Virgin, Golden Censer,

To thee be glory and praise, O Mother full of grace!

Holy Bishop Nikolaj

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

ХРИСТОС ЈЕ ПОСРЕД НАС! — И ЈЕСТЕ И БИЋЕ!

Dobro došo, Hriste! (drugi deo)

Iz ljubavi žarke, Care svih krasota,

Ti ostavi blesak krasnih heruvima,

U pećinu siđe ljudskoga života

C buktinjom i mirom očajnim ljudima.

O device sveta, kadilnice zlatna,

Slava ti i hvala, mati blagodatna!
