Welcome, O Christ! (part 1)

Out of burning love, Thou didst descend from heaven;

From eternal beauty, into monstrous pain;

From eternal light, into the thick darkness of evil.

Thou didst extend Thy holy hand to those choked in sin.

Heaven was amazed, the earth quaked.

Welcome, O Christ! O ye peoples, rejoice!

Out of burning love, by which Thou didst create the world,

As a slave Thou didst humble Thyself to loose the enslaved,

To restore the house that Adam destroyed,

To enlighten the darkened, to unloose sinners.

Love that knows not fear or humiliation.

Welcome, O Christ, O Master of Salvation!

Holy Bishop Nikolaj

Dobro došo, Hriste! (prvi deo)

Sveti Vladika Nikolaj

READINGS FOR Sunday 27th Sunday after Pentecost/ Holy Forefathers

Epistle: Col. 3:4-11. Reader: Catherine Munich Gospel: St. Luke 14:16-24.

Excuses?

In today’s Gospel reading, we reflect on something that is very common in our daily life — excuses. How many times have you been given an excuse? You are depending on an associate, and you receive an excuse. You ask your children to complete household chores and you receive an excuse. The delivery didn’t make it on time and you receive an excuse. Now, consider God’s commitment to you in that He gave His only begotten Son for your salvation. He provides no excuses but just asks that we follow Him as good and faithful stewards of His Church. Make your commitment to Christ in the upcoming year without any excuses. Remember “That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.”

Izgovori?

The Conception of the Most-holy Theotokos by Saint AnnA

The righteous Joachim and Anna were childless for fifty years of their married life. In their old age the Archangel Gabriel appeared to each one of them separately, telling them that God had heard their prayers and that they would give birth to a daughter, Mary. Then St. Anna conceived by her husband and after nine months bore a daughter blessed by God and by all generations of men: the Most-holy Virgin Mary, the Theotokos. (For more details, see September 9.)

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, Prologue of Ohrid

Sveti Vladika Nikolaj (Ohridski Prolog)

Serving on the Parish Council

This month is typically the time of the year when the Churches elect their new parish councils — a reflection on the Stewardship of serving in this capacity.

When one is called into service, by God’s Grace, one is provided with the opportunity to put aside all personal desires and agendas for the sake of promoting the Good News of Jesus Christ. It is for this reason that a Parish Council Member must regularly participate in this Good News by living a Christ-centered Life. Ideally, this means that the Parish Council Members’ life revolves around the Holy Eucharist-moving from one moment of Communion with God to the next. If our focus is constantly on increasing our Communion with God, how often do you think we will get caught up in the petty squabbles of this world?

A Christ-centered life is also a life of service; and all Parish Council Members are called not to be served, but to serve-just as Christ does. This service should be focused in a life of love. Reaching out in compassion to the Church community, a parish council member is responsible for fulfilling his or her duties to the fullest extent possible. He or she is to be the model Steward-continuously offering of their Time, Talents and Treasures in service of the Gospel of Christ. One has only to take the example of Christ washing the feet of the disciples to see the extent to which this sacrificial service is to go.

Are we prepared?

Today’s Gospel reading emphasizes that we do not know when God will call us. Our time here on earth is limited and as s result, we need to do all that we can for our Salvation. As we reflect on the Stewardship theme of CARE, are we preparing each and every day to entire God’s Kingdom. Think about the following:

Do we take time to pray and read the Scriptures daily?

Do we prepare to receive the Sacraments of Confession and Communion as often as possible?

Do we take enough time for our family?
Do priorities as listed in our checkbook match those as we list them to others? (i.e. Do we give more money to FIOS or DirecTV, or to the Church?)
Do we ensure that the number one focus of our talents is on the further development of Christ’s Holy Church?
Do we take care of the Ministries of the Church?
Do we take care of one another?
Do we take care of our environment

All very necessary for our preparation!

The Holy Prophet Habakkuk

Habakkuk was the son of Asaphat from the tribe of Simeon. He prophesied six hundred years before Christ, during the time of King Manasseh, and foretold the destruction of Jerusalem. When Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, attacked Jerusalem, Habakkuk sought refuge in the land of the Ishmaelites. From there he returned to Judea, where he lived as a farmer. One day he was carrying lunch to the workers in the fields, when suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared to him and said: Go carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel, who is in the lion’s den (Daniel 14:34). But Habakkuk responded: Lord, I never saw Babylon; neither do I know where the den is (Daniel 14:34–35). Then the angel took him by the hair and instantly brought him to Babylon, over an immense distance, to the lion’s den, where Daniel had been cast by King Cyrus as a punishment for not worshiping the idols. O Daniel, Daniel, cried Habakkuk, take the dinner which God hath sent thee (Daniel 14:37), and Daniel took it and ate. Then the angel of God again took Habakkuk and carried him back to his field in Judea. Habakkuk also prophesied the liberation of Jerusalem and the time of the coming of Christ. He entered into rest in ripe old age and was buried at Kela. His relics were discovered during the reign of Theodosius the Great.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, Prologue of Ohrid

Sveti prorok Avakum

I Danil primi i jede. Potom angel Božji opet uze Avakuma i prenese u Judeju, na njivu njegovu. Još je Avakum prorokovao o oslobođenju Jerusalima i vremenu Hristovom. Upokojio se u dubokoj starosti i sahranjen u mestu Kela. Mošti mu otkrivene u vreme Teodosija Velikog.

Uroš was the son of Tsar Dušan. He reigned during the difficult time of the collapse of the Serbian kingdom. Meek, devout and gentle, he did not want to subjugate the unrestrained nobles by force, among whom the most violent was Vukašin, who ended the good king’s life. The good Uroš suffered a martyr’s death on December 2, 1367, at the age of thirty-one. Slain by men, he was glorified by God. His miracle-working relics rested in the Jazak Monastery in Fruška Gora, whence they were translated to Belgrade during the Second World War. They were placed in the Cathedral Church alongside the relics of Prince Lazar and the Despot Stefan Štiljanović. During the reign of this good king, the Monastery of St. Nahum beside Lake Ohrid was built by Grgur, one of Uroš’s nobles.

Sveti Uroš, car srpski

Sin cara Dušana. Carovao u teško vreme raspada carstva srpskog.

THE PRIESTLY-MARTYR CLEMENT, BISHOP OF ROME

Clement was born in Rome of royal lineage and was a contemporary of the holy apostles. In Alexandria, he made the acquaintance of the Apostle Barnabas and, afterward, he joined the Apostle Peter whom his two brothers, Faustinus and Faustinian, had already followed. Clement did not separate himself from the great apostle, who appointed him as bishop before his death. After the death of Peter by martyrdom, the bishop of Rome was Linus, then Cletus [Anacletus] – both of them for a short time – and then Clement. Clement governed the Church of God with flaming zeal and, from day to day, brought a great number of unbelievers to the Faith of Christ. In addition, he ordered seven scribes to write the lives of the Christian martyrs who, at that time, suffered for their Lord. The Emperor Trajan banished him to Cherson where Clement found about two thousand exiled Christians. All were occupied with the difficult job of hewing stones in an arid place. The Christians received Clement with great joy and he was a living source of comfort to them. By his prayer, he brought forth water from the ground and converted so many of the unbelieving residents to Christianity that, in one year, seventy-five churches were built in that place. In order that he not further spread the Faith of Christ, Clement was condemned to death and drowned in the sea with a stone around his neck in the year 101 A.D. His miracle-working relics were removed from the sea only in the time of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

Svešteno-mučenik Kliment episkop. Rimski.

Klimenta primiše hrišćani s velikom radošću, i on im beše živi izvor utehe. Kirila i Metodija.

HOMILY on the faithful as one body and one spirit

…There is one body and one spirit (Ephesians 4:4).

The Holy Apostle Paul counsels the faithful to strive to be one body and one spirit. By one body is understood “one Faith,” without divisions, without heresies and without self-will: the whole Church is one body of which Christ is the Head. By one spirit is understood “love,” the ardent love of all the faithful for Christ, from which proceeds mutual love. The many become as one; many men become as one man. This is the miracle of the Christian Faith and Christian love. There is no power in the world which can be a stronger bond among men: not the same blood, or the same language, or the same hearth, or the same parents, or any type of common material interests. None of these is even nearly as powerful a bond as Christian faith and love. By this powerful, irresistible bond, all the members of the Church are bound to each other. The Church of God stands as one man, in time and in eternity-one body and one spirit. There is nothing more contradictory to this wondrous unity than the pride of individual men. Pride distorts faith, cools love, creates heresies, divides the Church, and sacrifices the good of the whole for individual satisfaction. Pride, in essence, is the absence of both faith and love. Brethren, may God save us from pride, the primal infirmity of the human race, that we may always be one body and one spirit in our Lord Jesus Christ.

To Thee, O Lord Jesus; to Thee, the Head of the Church, be glory and praise forever. Amen.

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

BESEDA o vernima kao jednom telu i jednom duhu

Jedno tijelo, jedan duh (Ef. 4, 4).

Gordost krivi veru, hladni ljubav; gordost stvara jeresi, cepa crkvu, žrtvuje dobro celine ugodnosti ličnoj. Tebi Gospode Isuse, Tebi Glavo Crkve, Tebi slava i hvala vavek. Amin.

Turn the Other Cheek

But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also (Matthew 5:39), commanded the Lord. This is the shortest and clearest teaching on humility. The evil demons fear nothing so much as a humble man fulfilling the Lord’s commandments. There was a rich nobleman in Alexandria who had a young daughter into whom an evil spirit had entered, and the daughter had gone insane. Someone told the despairing father that none could heal his daughter except the monks who lived in the wilderness and came to Alexandria from time to time to sell baskets, their handiwork; but none of the monks would enter the rich nobleman’s house if he told them why he was inviting them. It would be better for him to purchase baskets from the monks, then ask them to come to his house for payment. Then, when they entered the house, he could implore them to pray to God for all the members of the household, and thus obtain God’s help to cure the maiden. The father obeyed and went to the marketplace on a certain day and met one of St. Macarius’s disciples as he was selling baskets. The man agreed to buy the baskets, and invited the monk to his home to pay him. When the monk entered the home, the possessed daughter leaped at the monk and vigorously struck him on one cheek with her hand. The monk silently turned the other cheek. The evil spirit cried out in anguish and departed from the girl, and she became completely calm and rational. When the monk returned to the wilderness, he told the elders what had happened and they all glorified God, that He had given so much power to those who fulfill His commandments.

Drugi Obraz Obrni

U Aleksandriji beše neki bogataš i velmož, pa imaše ćerku mladu, u koju uđe zli duh, i ćerka siđe s uma. Makarija, gde prodaje kotarice. On brzo kupi kotarice, i pozva monaha kući svojoj, da mu plati. Kada monah uđe u kuću, luda ćerka iznenadno iskoči pred monaha i snažno ga udari rukom po jednom obrazu. Ćutke monah brzo okrete i drugi obraz. U tom zli duh zavapi gorko i pobeže iz devojke. I devojka postade potpuno mirna i razumna. Kada se monah vrati u pustinju ispriča starcima, šta se sluči. I oni svi proslaviše Boga što darova toliku silu onome ko ispunjava zapovesti Njegove.

Love that Surpasses Knowledge

… to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge (Ephesians 3:19).

The love that surpasses knowledge, that exceeds our understanding, is the love of Christ. No one can have even an inkling of the quality or the greatness of this love until Christ enters into him. Can anyone who has never tasted honey have any idea of its taste? Only when Christ enters into the heart of man by faith, does man know the inexpressible taste of the love of Christ-its sweet and intoxicating fragrance and incomparable comprehensive-ness. Just as a man who has Christ in his heart touches the breadth, length, depth and height of the knowledge of divine wisdom, so this man with Christ in his heart also touches the limitless open seas of the divine love of Christ. O my brethren, how feeble are words when one needs to speak of the love of Christ-words are never weaker than in this situation. Indeed, what can one say before such astounding proofs of His love? He created us out of love, He was incarnate out of love, and out of love He accepted mockery and death for our sake. He opened the heavens for us out of love, and He revealed to us the immortal glory prepared for us! Even all this is only a part of the inexhaustible wealth, glory, beauty and life-creating sustenance that is the love of Christ. Oh, if only we too would be made worthy by faith, so that the Lord Jesus would enter our hearts, and that we would taste of His ineffable love!

O Lord Jesus Christ, our Life, our Wisdom and our Love, cleanse us and enter into us.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj

WARM CLOTHING NEEDED  The International Preparatory School (on the Grover Cleveland Campus) in Buffalo teaches children from 46 different areas around the world. Many of these students, grades 5–12, have come from refugee camps, and most are in need of warm clothing: coats, hats, scarves, gloves, sweaters, pants, etc. Clean and washed “gently used” clothing is accepted and students from our St. Stephen Senior High Church School class will be on hand to collect your donations. New clothing is also welcomed. Donations for younger children are gratefully accepted as well. Collections begin on Sunday, Nov. 24 and will continue through Advent. Let’s show our thanks to God for all we have, and share with others in need.

MOTHER ANA ANNIVERSARY Our dear Mother Ana was tonsured a nun 40 years ago November 22. A small celebration of that anniversary took place this last Tuesday at the Monastery. If anyone wishes to send greetings to Mother Ana for her anniversary, they can address them to Mother Ana, Monastery Marcha, 5095 Broadview Road, Richfield, OH 44286.

USED EQUIPMENT NEEDED  Tim Hawkins, subdeacon and husband of Natalie Mirolovich Hawkins, just began teaching music at Buffalo’s Lafayette High School. The school lacks equipment needed to teach music today. Tim is looking for donations of used, working electric keyboards/pianos that people are willing to part with. The keyboards need to have full sized keys (61 note) and electric adapters if possible. Also, he is looking for spare sets of headphones (non earbud headphones) for students to be able to listen to what they play without disrupting other students. Tim is also willing to accept monetary donations personally to purchase keyboards and headphones from second hand ads and floor models from stores if people want to donate that way. He will also need to buy Y adapters for headphones  as well as size adapters. Tim and Natalie can be seen in church most any Sunday. All help is greatly appreciated.

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

Tek kad verom uđe Hristos u srce čoveku, čovek oseti neiskazani ukus ljubavi Hristove, sladosni i opojni miris njen, i nedosežnu sveobuhvatljivost njenu. O braćo moja, kako su reči blede, kad treba govoriti o ljubavi Hristovoj, – nikad i nigde nisu bleđe i nemoćnije nego tu.

Tebi slava i hvala vavek. Amin.

Sveti Vladika Nikolaj
