Saint Arsenije of Srem, Archbishop of Pech

Arsenije was a great hierarch of the Serbian Church and the successor of St. Sava. Arsenije was born in Srem. While still in his youth, he was tonsured a monk and devoted himself sincerely and wholeheartedly to asceticism for the salvation of his soul. Hearing of the wonderful person and work of St. Sava, Arsenije went to him in Zhicha, where St. Sava received him cordially and included him among the brotherhood of ièa. Seeing the rare virtues in Arsenije, Sava soon appointed him abbot of the Zhicha monastery. When the Hungarians attacked the Serbian lands, Sava sent Arsenije to the south to look for a place more secluded than Zhicha for the archiepiscopal see. Arsenije chose Pech, and built a monastery there and a church dedicated to the Holy Apostles (which was later renamed the Church of the Ascension of the Lord). Before his second departure for Jerusalem, Sava designated Arsenije as his successor to the archiepiscopal throne, and when Sava reposed in Trnovo on his way back from Jerusalem, Arsenije urged King Vladislav to translate the body of St. Sava to the Serbian land. He governed the Church prudently for thirty years and reposed in the Lord on October 28, 1266. On the wall of the altar in the church of Pech is written: “O Lord our God, hearken: visit and bless this church… and remember also me, the sinful Arsenije.” Arsenije is buried in the church at Pech.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj (The Prolog of Ochrid)

Sveti Arsenije Sremac, Arhiepiskop Pećski.

Veliki jerarh srpske crkve i naslednik sv. Save, Arsenije beše rodom iz Srema. Još u mladosti zamonaši se i predade se iskreno svesrdnom podvigu radi spasenja duše. No čuvši za divnu ličnost i delatnost Sv. Save Arsenije ode k njemu u Žiču, gde ga Sava ljubazno primi i uvrsti u bratstvo Žičko. 1266. god. Na oltarnom zidu Pećskog hrama stoji napisano: „Gospodi Bože našъ vonmi, pos!ti i blagoslovi hramъ seй… pomenite že i mene grešnago Arsenija”. Sahranjen tu u Pećskom hramu.

GIVE, GIVE, GIVE

A parishioner complained once that Christianity is one continual give, give, give. His pastor replied: “Thank you for the finest definition of Christianity I have ever heard. That’s the way it all began. God gave: He gave His only Son. His Son gave: He gave His life on the cross that we may have life. His disciples gave: they left their homes and businesses to devote themselves full time to Christ as proclaimers of His salvific Good News. All but one of the twelve apostles died a martyr’s death: they gave their lives for Christ. Through the ages the work of Christ has prospered to the extent that Christians have been willing to give, give, and give.”

DAJ, DAJ, DAJ

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

Lessons from Father thaddeus

We are an incredibly precise thinking instrument, man. Our thoughts thus not only affect the nervous system of intelligent beings, but also animals and plant life. All of us expect love and attention, but we don’t understand that our thoughts are a powerful force. Just a little composure is needed to see whether your neighbor sends thoughts full of goodness and love, or the other kind. That’s why we need to be in prayer, for he who uses love, God will give happiness and purpose.

Pouke oca Tadeja

The Venerable Hilarion the Great

Like a rose growing among thorns, this great saint was born of pagan parents in the village of Tabatha near Gaza in Palestine. His parents sent him to study in Alexandria, where the gifted youngster quickly assimilated both secular learning and spiritual wisdom. Coming to know the Lord Christ, he was baptized, and desired to dedicate himself completely to the service of the Lord. With this desire in his heart, Hilarion visited St. Anthony in the desert and became his disciple. Then he returned to his homeland and lived a life of asceticism near Maiuma, at Gaza. Demons tried to terrify him in various ways, but by prayer to God and the sign of the Cross he always overcame them and drove them away. Many lovers of the spiritual life gathered around him. Hilarion became for Palestine what St. Anthony was for Egypt. A divine teacher, a strict ascetic and a wonderful miracle-worker, Hilarion was revered not only by Christians but also by pagans. However, fearing the praise of men and tearfully lamenting, “Woe is me, I have received my reward on earth!” he fled from place to place, to hide from men and remain alone with his soul and with God. Thus, he traveled and lived in Egypt, Sicily, Dalmatia and finally in Cyprus, where his life of great labor came to an end in about the year 372, at the age of eighty. The miracle-working relics of St. Hilarion were translated to Palestine by his disciple Hesychius, and were placed in the monastery founded by him.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj (The Prolog of Ochrid)

Prepodobni Ilarion Veliki.

S tom željom u srcu poseti Ilarion sv. Antonija u pustinji, i posta njegov učenik. Demoni su ga plašili raznim strašilištima, no on ih je molitvom Bogu i krsnim znamenjem vazda pobeđivao i odgonio. Ilariona prenese učenik njegov Isihije u Palestinu i položi u manastir njime osnovani.

READINGS FOR Sunday 19th Sunday after Pentecost/ St. Hilarion the Great

Epistle: 2Cor. 11:31-12:9; Gospel: St. Luke 6:31-36.

Lessons from Father thaddeus

People search for peace and freedom. They do not know, poor as they are, what freedom is. They think having everything is freedom. But, no, all that is slavery. We remain slaves. Even if we have everything, we remain slaves of that wealth and have no peace, no rest.

We can go wherever we want, do what we want to do, and yet, that’s not freedom. Freedom is the Lord’s Freedom – when one is liberated from the tyranny of thoughts. When one is not tyrannized by any thoughts, when he lives in peace, he then is always in prayer, always waiting upon the Lord, working in good conscience, working earnestly. Every job is done from the heart. Our entire being should participate in prayer, in work, in everything we do. And let’s not be warriors on the unjust side, let’s not wage war with anyone. Let’s not wage war in our thoughts. Let us be at peace with all. Don’t let your heart take offense. Let it go. Today this person offends us, tomorrow who knows who. We always give attention to those offenses, and yet we should overcome them with peace. Let’s not take it to heart. When we do not take it to heart, the enemy will still want to offend us. But if it bounces off of us, it does not disturb our inner peace, and eventually people will see: insult, insult, and finally put up their hands. So people marvel afterward, “Man, how did you get such peace, as if you have no interest in this life? We get upset, say offensive things—but you, nothing. You don’t get offended. How did you get that? How can that be? We don’t have that strength!” That is our Lord defending us.

Pouke oca Tadeja

Ljudi traze mir, slobodu. Robujemo stalno; i ako imamo svega i svacega, opet robujemo tom bogatstvu i nemamo mira, pokoja.

Kako si to stekao? Kako to moze? Mi nemamo za to snage!” To nas Gospod cuva.
