The Venerable MOTHER Parasceva—ST. Petka

This glorious saint was of Serbian descent, and was born in the town of Epivat between Selymbria and Constantinople. St. Parasceva’s parents were wealthy, devout Christians. They also had a son, Euthymius, who was tonsured a monk during his parents’ lifetime, and later became the famous Bishop of Madytos.

The virgin Parasceva always yearned for the ascetic life for the sake of Christ. After her parents’ repose, she left her home and went first to Constantinople, then to the wilderness of Jordan, where she lived the ascetic life until old age. Who can express all the labors, sufferings and demonic temptations that St. Parasceva endured in the course of her many years? In her old age, an angel of God once appeared to her and said: “Leave the wilderness and return to your homeland; it is necessary that you render your body to the earth there, and your soul to the habitation of the Lord.” St. Parasceva obeyed, and returned to Epivat. There she lived for two years in ceaseless fasting and prayer, then gave up her soul to God and took up her abode in Paradise.

St. Parasceva entered into rest in the eleventh century. Over the course of time her relics were translated to Constantinople, to Trnovo, again to Constantinople, and then to Belgrade. Her relics now repose in Romania, in the town of Iasi. In Belgrade, the well of St. Petka miraculously heals the sick who draw near with faith in God and love for this saint.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, (The Prolog of Ochrid)

Prepodobna mati Paraskeva Petka—sveta petka.

Sv. Petka posluša glas s neba, ostavi omiljenu joj pustinju, i vrati se u Epivat. Tu ona, prožive još dve godine, opet u neprestanom postu i molitvi, i onda predade duh svoj Bogu i preseli se u rajska naselja.

READINGS FOR Sunday 18th Sunday after Pentecost/ St. Petka

Epistles: 2Cor. 9:6-11; Gal. 3:23-29; Gospels: St. Luke 5:1-11; Matt. 25:1-13 .

Lessons from Father Thaddeus

One mother had a daughter who was her great hope. But the daughter got sick and died, and since she had been devout, the Lord brought her to heaven. Her mother wanted to see her in a dream, but the daughter did not have a need to come to her mother because she was in paradise. So the mother went to a fortune teller and magician. The fortune teller told her to go before sunrise to the grave, take a bottle and do something, and wait for her daughter to come. The mother did this, and her daughter appeared to her and said:

“Mother, what have you done? Why were you looking for me? I was in a paradise, but now I cannot go back. Why didn’t you pray to God for me? Such a great sadness has now weighed me down that I cannot go back to the Lord. I can’t go back to the place to which I was committed.”

We should not mourn for the dead, but rather pray to the Lord that He grant them evangelical habitation.

Pouke oca Tadeja

Zašto si me tražila?

The Holy Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus

These holy and wonderful martyrs and heroes of the Christian Faith were at first noblemen at the court of Emperor Maximian. The emperor himself esteemed them greatly because of their courage, wisdom and fidelity. But when the emperor heard that his two noblemen were Christians, his love for them turned into rage.

Once, when there was a great sacrificial offering to idols, the emperor demanded that Sergius and Bacchus offer sacrifices with him, but they openly refused to obey the emperor in this. Beside himself with rage, the emperor commanded that their military garments, rings and emblems be stripped from them and that they be dressed in women’s clothing. He then placed iron hoops around their necks and paraded them through the streets of the city of Rome, to be mocked by everyone.

Afterward, he sent them to Antiochus, his deputy in Asia, for torture. Antiochus had risen to his position with Sergius and Bacchus’s help, as they had at one time recommended him to the emperor. When Antiochus implored them to deny Christ and save themselves from dishonorable suffering and death, these saints replied: “Both honor and dishonor, both life and death-all are the same to him who seeks the Heavenly Kingdom.”

Antiochus cast Sergius into prison and ordered that Bacchus be tortured first. His servants took turns beating the holy Bacchus until his whole body was broken. Bacchus’s holy soul departed his broken and bloodied body, and in the hands of angels was borne to the Lord. St. Bacchus suffered in the town of Barbalissos.

Then St. Sergius was led out and shod in iron shoes with inward-protruding nails. He was driven, on foot, to the town of Rozapha, in Syria, and was beheaded there with the sword. His soul went to Paradise where, together with his friend Bacchus, he received a crown of immortal glory from Christ, his King and Lord. These two wondrous knights of the Christian Faith suffered in about the year 303.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, (The Prolog of Ochrid)

Sveti mučenici Sergije i Vakh.

Ovi sveti i divni mučenici i junaci vere Hristove behu najpre prvi velikaši na dvoru cara Maksimijana. I sam ih car uvažavaše mnogo zbog hrabrosti, mudrosti i vernosti.

Postradaše ovi krasni vitezi vere Hristove oko 303. g.    • Sveti vladika Nikolaj, Ohridski Prolog

READINGS FOR Sunday 17th Sunday after Pentecost

Epistle: 2Cor. 6:16-7:1; Gospel: St. Matthew 15:21-28.

Lessons from Father Thaddeus

A mother is a mother, and we are all tied to our mother. Many scholars were grateful for their mother, which is why they remember her. Our attitude toward our mother is a issue of character.

When our mother passes into eternity we are very sad. This is our mistake. We need to pray, because she needs our prayers, but not lament. It is a problem when we grieve excessively. This is a big mistake—why we are Christians! Instead of being thankful to God for everything, praying that (she) be numbered among the angels and saints, we lament. Because of that children and mother suffer much into eternity.

While Bishop Nicholaj was in this life he was asked whether there is salvation for those who have not repented during their lifetime. He said there is, if someone prays for such a soul forty days and more. The Liturgy is the Sacrifice of Golgotha. The Lord gives Himself in sacrifice. “O Lord, wash away the sins of those who are mentioned here by Thy Precious Blood.” This is the greatest sacrifice that we Christians can accomplish.

Pouke oca Tadeja

Zbog toga i deca i majka mnogo pate u večnosti.

Monasticism, the highest calling

In Serbian history the monk [or nun] occupies a position higher than any other calling or title, not because of any external authority, but because of his moral stature. In the chronicles of the Orthodox Church one hears of a visionary who saw monks esteemed above the great emperor Constantine in the heavenly world.

From time immemorial members of the Serbian aristocracy would withdraw from the world into monasteries and the wilderness the same as the common people. The Serbian Saint Petka (the Venerable Mother Paraskeva) was of noble birth. That trinity of glorious spiritual fathers, St. Prohor (Prochorus) of Pcinja, St. Gavril (Gabriel) of Lesnovo, and St. John of Rila, were also of aristocratic and distinguished birth. They lived long before Nemanja and Sava, and served the Lord.

But service to the Lord by this monastic path, in majestic style with great zeal, began with those two extraordinary men, who ushered in all that is great in the history of the Serbian people.

The mighty Nemanja became a monk, and so did his son Prince Rastko, and then King Stevan the First-Crowned, King Vladislav, King Urosh, Prince Predislav (later called Sava II), King Dragutin, and so did the half-brothers of Tsar Dushan, and Anna (Nemanja’s wife) became a nun, as did Queen Helen (Jelena) of Gradac, Helen the sister of King Stevan Decanski, Tsaritsa Helen and the wife of Tsar Dushan, Tsaritsa Militsa and Despotitsa Euphemia (Jefimija), and Mother Angelina; and Maxim her son embraced the monastic life along with many more members of the house of Brankovich, at Srem, Erdelj, and in Romania.

After the battle of Kosovo many Serbian nobles withdrew to the Holy Mountain of Athos and ended their lives there as monks. Just as many of them filled the Serbian and Greek monasteries in Palestine. Even the monastery on Mount Sinai in Egypt had Serbian monks.

Through monasticism and martyrdom for the faith, the Serbian aristocracy sealed their sincere service and their complete choice of the heavenly kingdom, the unchangeable and eternal reality.

What is monasticism other than a voluntary martyrdom of the self for the sake of the highest aim of life as the Savior proclaimed it? The Serbian nobles easily made their decision in favor of this martyrdom of self, since they had the example of Nemanja and Sava before them. The elderly followed the example of the old Nemanja, and the youth the example of Sava. It is certain that no other Orthodox people has had so many rulers voluntarily descend the throne and withdraw to monasteries to serve Christ as simple monks through monastic struggle. Truly, in this the Serbs hold first place before the whole of Christendom.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj, (The Serbian People as Theodul—Servant of God)

Zaista, Srbi u tome imaju prvenstvo pred celim hrišćanskim svetom».

Sveti vladika Nikolaj Velimirović,
Srpski narod kao Teodul—Sluga Božija

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

Our Roma have no house or property, and yet their tent is full of children. They are always happy, always cheerful. And our people have bread, and even with bread will not have children. It is sad. We need to correct ourselves if we can.

God’s power is active everywhere, and especially in those people who have turned to the Lord. God is Peace, Comfort and Joy to all. That is why I wish you peace and joy from the Lord.

The thoughts we entertain—such is our life. If our thoughts are peaceful and quiet – then we have peace. If our thoughts are negative—then we are agitated.

Pouke oca Tadeja

Ako su nam misli mirne i tihe – eto nam mir. Ako su nam misli negativne – eto nam nemir.

For I say unto you, among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist

(Luke 7:28)

Icon: Sts. Zechariah & Elizabeth, Parents of St. John the Baptist

The Feast of the Conception of St. John the Baptist, October 6th

On this day the mercy, miracle and wisdom of God are celebrated: mercy toward the

devout and righteous parents of St. John, the aged Zacharias and the aged Elizabeth, who

all their lives had wished and begged a child from God; the miraculous conception of John

in the over-aged womb of Elizabeth; and wisdom in the dispensation of man’s salvation.

For John, God had special great intentions, namely, that he be the Prophet and

Forerunner of Christ the Lord, the Savior of the world. Through His angels, God

announced the birth of Isaac to the childless Sarah, Samson to the childless Manoah and

his wife and of John the Precursor [Forerunner] to the childless Zacharias and Elizabeth.

Through His angels, God announced the birth of those, for whom He had special

intentions. How could children be born of aged parents? If someone is curious to know

this, let him not inquire about this, neither of men, for men do not know, nor of natural

laws, for this is beyond natural laws but rather let him turn his gaze on the power of the

Almighty God, Who, out of nothing, created the whole world and Who for the creation of

the first man, Adam, did not need any parents, neither old nor young. Instead of curiosity

let us give thanks to God Who often reveals His power, mercy and wisdom to us outside

natural laws in which we, shackled, without special miracles of God, would fall into

despair and forgetfulness of God. From Holy. Bishop Nicholai (Velimirovic), Prologue of Ohrid

Začeće sv. Jovana Krstitelja.

September 29, 2013 Sunday Bulletin

“For through the Cross, Joy Has Come into all the World”

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of our Lord is celebrated for eight days.

We have been keeping these days the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. There is a passage in the Gospel in which the Lord says to us, “No one has greater love than he who gives his life for his neighbor.” And these words resolve the contrast between the horror of the Cross and the glory of it, between death and the resurrection. There is nothing more glorious, more awe-inspiring and wonderful than to love and to be loved. And to be loved of God with all the life, with all the death of the Only-Begotten Son, is both tragedy but mainly victory. In the Canon (Anaphora) of the Liturgy we say:

“Holy art Thou and all-holy, Thou and Thine only-begotten Son and Thy Holy Spirit! Holy art Thou and all-holy, and magnificent is Thy glory! Who hast so loved Thy world as to give Thine only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life; Who when He had come and had fulfilled all the dispensation for us, in the night in which He was given up — or rather, gave Himself up for the life of the world — took bread in His holy, pure, and blameless hands; and when He had given thanks and blessed it, and hallowed it, and broken it, He gave it to His holy disciples and apostles…..”

This is the divine love. At times one can give one’s own life more easily than offer unto death the person whom one loves beyond all; and this is what God our Father has done. But it does not make less the sacrifice of Him who is sent unto death for the salvation of one person or of the whole world.

And so when we think of the Cross we must think of this strangely inter-twined mystery of tragedy and of victory. The Cross, an instrument of infamous death, of punitive death to which criminals were doomed — because Christ’s death was that of an innocent, and because this death was a gift of self in an act of love — becomes victory.

This is why Saint Paul could say, “It is no longer I, it is Christ Who lives in me.” Divine love filled him to the brim, and therefore there was no room for any other thought or feeling, any other approach to anyone apart from love, a love that gave itself unreservedly: love sacrificial, love crucified, but love exulting in the joy of life.
