Ninth Sunday After Pentecost.

The holy apostle Peter, with the Lord’s permission, gets down from the ship and walks on the water; then he yields to the movement of fear and begins to drown. The fact that he decided upon such an unusual act, hoping in the Lord, is nothing deserving reprimand—otherwise the Lord would not have allowed him to do this. The reprimand comes because he did not sustain the original state of his soul. He was filled with inspired hope in the Lord’s ability to do anything, and this gave him the boldness to entrust himself to the waves. Several steps were already made along this new path—it was necessary only to stand more firmly in hope, gazing at the Lord Who is near, and at the experience of walking in His strength. Instead, gave himself over to human thoughts: “The wind is strong, the waves are great, the water is not firm;” and this shook loose and weakened his firmness of faith and hope. Because of this he broke away from the Lord’s hands, and, left to the operation of nature’s laws, began to drown. The Lord rebuked him: O ye of little faith! Why did you doubt? showing that in this lay the entire reason for the misfortune. Behold a lesson for all who undertake something, great or small, with the aim of pleasing the Lord! Keep your first state of faith and hope, from which a great virtue is born—patience in doing good, which serves as the basis for a God-pleasing life. As long as these dispositions are maintained, inspiration for labouring on the path begun does not go away; and obstacles, no matter how great they may be, are not noticed. When these dispositions weaken, the soul is filled with human reasoning about human methods of preserving one’s life and conducting the affairs which one has begun. But since this reasoning always turns out to be powerless, fear of how one should be enters the soul; from this comes wavering—wondering whether or not to continue—and in the end comes a complete return. You must do it this way; if you begin, keep it up—chase away troubling thoughts, and be bold in the Lord, Who is nearby.

READINGS FOR Sunday 9th Sunday after Pentecost/Post-Feast of Transfiguration

Epistle: 1Cor. 3:9-17; Gospel: St. Matthew 14:22-44.

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

Magic is effective where there is no prayer nor firm hope in God. Once a young woman came to me. She graduated political science, but was very devout. She married a doctor, a man who had previously been married. He was only a month into that marriage when his first wife left him. This young woman’s husband has an older brother who is also a doctor. He married three times and all three women left him. Their mother is also a doctor and a professor of medicine. She lives with her sister and deals with black magic. She rarely visits her son. But she came one day angry and said to her daughter-in-law, “I chased that other woman from my son, but I can’t do anything to you.” Through magic she was forcing of evil spirits to annoying her daughter-in-law so that she would leave her husband. But the wife (the daughter in law) is a person of prayer, zealous for the Lord. As the evil spirit can do nothing, he returns to the mother-in-law/grandmother and makes her a nervous nellie. He goes back to the one who sent him, and takes revenge on him. Later, when a child was born, the grandmother came again and asked the daughter-in-law:

“Does that fool love his child?”

“How could he not love it?”

“So he still loves it!”

The son enters, and weeping, and says to his wife: – “You know I am not happy to enter the apartment. I know that my mother is doing all this, but there is nothing I can do….”

Pouke oca Tadeja

Magija deluje tamo gde nema molitve ni čvrste nade u Boga.

THE PERSONAL MESSAGE OF THE TRANSFIGURATION FOR YOU

At the Transfiguration a voice from heaven uttered only: Hear ye Him (Matt. 17:5). Why is this so? Because the fruit of obedience was being shown to them. It was as if the Heavenly Father were saying: Do you want to attain this? Hear what He says and commands you.

If you go on His path, you will undoubtedly enter into the realm of light, which will embrace you not from without, but will come from within, and always keep you in a state in which from the depth of your soul you will utter: It is good for us to be here.

You will be filled with the light of joy, the light of good will, the light of knowledge; all sorrows will pass by, the disturbance of the passions will disappear, falsehood and delusion will disperse.

On the earth you will become as in heaven; from among the earth-born, you will become God-born; from amidst the perishable you will become eternally blessed.

Then all will be yours, because you yourselves will become Christʼs.

He who loves Christ the Lord is beloved of the heavenly Father, and Both come to him and make their abode with him.

This is the light of the Transfiguration!

Ispuniće vas svetlost utehe, svetlost dobrih namera, svetlost znanja: sve žalosti će proći, nemir strasti će iščeznuti, laž i zablude se rasejati.

LESSONS FROM FR. THADDEUS

One has to prepare his heart to unite with theLord in Holy Communion. Fasting isnecessary to calm the body, because whenthe body is calm, the soul will be quieted. TheChurch has prescribed how to fast. The heartneeds to be prepared. We can eat nothing, and still our hearts be deceitful and malicious. How can we prepare to receive HolyCommunion when there are individuals thatwe cannot tolerate? We will take HolyCommunion, but not for salvation, because weheld on to characteristics of hell that are evil.

Fasting is preparation for a peaceful heart. The Holy Fathers say: “He who is not obedientfasts and prays to God in vain.” Obedience isgreater than prayer and fasting. When I wasyoung I did not understand the instructions ofthe Holy Fathers, but later I saw that this istrue. He who does not calm his heart andcleanse it of evil thoughts fasts in vain.

The Lord is all peace and all joy. We need toprepare our heart to be gentle andundisturbed, otherwise we take HolyCommunion unto condemnation, not untosalvation. That’s why we pray that ourCommunion be not unto judgement, but untosalvation.

Whoever visits the monasteries to seemonuments, architecture and frescoes willcome home with an empty soul. However, ifhe is a devout soul, if he is visiting for thesake of his soul, in order to acquire peace andsalvation, he will return full of comfort.

POUKE OCA TADEJA

Post je potrebanza smirenje tela, jer kad setelo smiri, smiriće se i duša.Crkva je propisala kakotreba postiti. Srce trebapripremiti.

WATCH YOUR HEART

Watch your heart during all your life—examine it, listen to it, and see what prevents its union with the most blessed Lord. Let this be for you the science of all sciences, and with God’s help you will easily observe what estranges you from God, and what draws you towards Him and unites you to Him. It is the evil one more than anything that stands between our hearts and God; he estranges God from us by various passions, or by the desires of the flesh, by the desires of the eyes, and by worldly pride.

Christ being led into the heart by faith, dwells in it with peace and joy. It is not without reason that it is said of God, “You are Holy, and rest in the saints.”

St. John of Kronstadt

PRATI SVOJE SRCE

SAINT MARY MAGDALENE

Mary Magdalene was one of the myrrh-bearing women and “equal to the apostles”. She was born in the town of Magdala along the shore of Lake Gennesaret and was from the tribe of Issachar. She was tormented by seven evil spirits from which the Lord Jesus freed her and made her whole. She was a faithful follower and servant of the Lord during His earthly life. Mary Magdalene stood beneath the Cross on Golgotha and grieved bitterly and mourned with the All-Holy Birth-giver of God. After the death of the Lord she visited His sepulchre three times. When the Lord resurrected she saw Him on two occasions: once alone and the other time with the other myrrh-bearing women. She traveled to Rome and appeared before Tiberias Caesar and presenting him with a red colored egg, greeted him with the words: “Christ is Risen!” Mary Magdalene returned from Rome to Ephesus to St. John the Theologian whom she assisted in the work of preaching the Gospel. With great love toward the resurrected Lord, and with great zeal, she proclaimed the Holy Gospel to the world as a true apostle of Christ. She died peacefully in Ephesus and, according to tradition, was buried in the same cave in which seven youths were miraculously put to sleep for hundreds of years and, after that, were brought to life and then died (August 4). The relics of St. Mary Magdalene were later transferred to Constantinople. There is a Russian Orthodox convent dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene near the Garden of Gethsemane.

SV. Marija Magdalina.

Mironosica ravnoapostolna. Putovala u Rim, izašla pred ćesara Tiberija, i predajući mu jajce crveno obojeno, pozdravila ga rečima: Hristos voskrese! Mariji Magdalini.

READINGS FOR Sunday 6th Sunday after Pentecost/Holy Myrrhbearer Mary Magdalene

Epistle: Romans 12:6-14; Gospel: St. Matthew9:1-8.

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

The Lord grieves that his creatures suffer so, but it is in vain because they don’t want to repent.

An old man came to St. Anthony and confessed that he is a great sinner and has committed many sins. “I want you to tell me if there is repentance for me?”

“I will pray to God that He reveal it to me, and you come back in a week.”

The Lord revealed this to him: “Do you know who that old man is?”

“I do not know.”

“He is Satan. He wants to hear if there is repentance for him. There is repentance. He is a spirit and is constantly in motion. He has to stand in one place for three years facing the East and pray, ‘O Lord, forgive all my malice.’”

The old man came a week later. “Did you ask for me?”

“I did. You need to stand for three years facing East and pray, ‘O Lord, forgive all my malice.'”

He hopped on one foot because he knew this but does not want to repent.

There is no unpardonable sin. There is no sin greater than the mercy of God.

The Holy Fathers wanted to know what constituted blasphemy against the Holy Spirit [the only unforgivable sin], and they received the answer. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is persistence in unrepentence and opposition to the truth. In vain do you tell someone that God is everywhere and that He is the Giver of Life, if he does not want to hear it.

Pouke oca Tadeja

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

“Bear in mind that for cleansing your heart from sins you will obtain an infinite reward—you will see God, your most gracious creator, your providence. The work of cleansing the heart is difficult, because it is connected with great privations and afflictions; and therefore, the reward is great. ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God’ Matt. 5:8 St John of Kronstadt
