Sunday of All the Saints.

The Holy Church commemorates Saints every day. But because there have been God-pleasers who struggled in obscurity and were not revealed to the Holy Church, the Church has set a day on which we praise all those who have pleased God throughout the ages, that they all might be glorified by the Church. The Church instituted this commemoration immediately after the descent of the Holy Spirit, because all saints have been made and are being made saints by the grace of the Holy Spirit. The grace of the Holy Spirit brings repentance and the forgiveness of sins; it leads one into battle with the passions and lusts, and crowns this labor with purity and passionlessness. And thus a new creature appears, fit for a new heaven and new earth. Let us be zealous to follow the saints of God. Today’s Gospel reading teaches us how to do this: it demands fearless confession of faith in the Lord, particular love toward Him, raising the cross of self-denial, and heartfelt renunciation of everything. Let us place a beginning according to these instructions.

NEDELJA SVIH SVETIH

Blagodat Svetoga Duha donosi pokajanje i otpuštenje grehova, uvodi u borbu sa strastima i pohotama i podvig venčava čistotom i bestrasnošću.

READINGS FOR Sunday Sunday of All Saints/Nedelja Svih Svetih    Epistle: Hebrews 11:33-12:2; Gospels: St. Matthew 10:32-33; 37-38; 19:27-30

Sunday of All Saints

Sunday of All Saints, the first Sunday after Pentecost, is dedicated to all the Saints, as the “harvest of God’s Spirit” and “the fruits of divine grace,” which was sent to man on the day of Pentecost. Since not all canonized saints have their own days set for celebration in the calendar, and especially as the names of all those whom God has glorified are not know, the Church has established this holiday.

As early as St. John Chrysostom, the memory of all holy martyrs was celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost. In the service of this day and the Synaxarion the ranks all the saints are listed: Forefathers, Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Hierarchs, Hieromartyrs, Ascetics, Righteous and all the choirs of holy women.

With this feast, the period of the “Bright Triodion” is ending and the usual plan of worship begins when the services are determined by the Ochtoechos and Menaion. On Monday after the Sunday of All Saints begins the Apostle’s Fast, which serves as a preparation for the great feast in honor of the leaders of the apostles Saints Peter and Paul on June 29 (July 12).

Nedelja Svih Svetih

CHRIST IS IN OUR MIDST! — HE IS AND SHALL BE!

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

After the Lord we have no greater good than parents. The Lord says, “I am the one who conceived the fruit of the womb.” Parents are a tool in the hands of the Lord. The Lord blesses marriage.

It takes time to fill the number of all those Fallen angels that went with Satan, but God even for them, the spirits of evil, is still God. They are highly intelligent creatures, but for them there is no peace or repose.

We must seek comfort from loved ones because we are created beings, limited by time and space, and we can not give infinitely, but we want infinity. We seek infinite peace, infinite joy — all without end. But our loved ones cannot give us everything. We are all limited and we are in constant war with evil thoughts, as the fallen spirits are full of malice (evil spirits attack us in our thoughts — suggesting evil thoughts in our heads).

Pouke oca Tadeja

Posle Gospoda nemamo veće dobro od svojih roditelja. Gospod kaže: “Ja sam taj koji začinje plod u utrobi majke.” Roditelji su oruđe u rukama Gospodnjim. Gospod blagosilja brak.

The Sunday of Holy Pentecost.

God’s plan for our salvation is accomplished! The operation of all the Persons of the Most Holy Trinity have now come into effect to accomplish it. What God the Father has willed, the Son of God fulfilled in Himself, and the Holy Spirit has now descended in order to impart it to the faithful. For our salvation is according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the Blood of Jesus Christ (I Pet. 1:2).

For this sake we are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, obliged, to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you (Matt. 28:19–20).

Those who do not confess the Most Holy Trinity cannot participate in the saving action of Its Persons and thus receive salvation.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, the Trinity one in essence and undivided, granting us confession of Itself! “O Father Almighty, and Word, and Spirit, one nature united in three Persons, transcendent and extremely divine! Into Thee have we been baptized, and Thee shall we bless throughout all ages.”

NEDELJA SVETE PEDESETNICE

“Oče Svedržitelju, Slove i Duše, u trima Ipostasima presuštastveno i prebožanstveno sjedinjavajuće jestastvo, u Tebe se krstismo i Tebe blagosiljamo u sve vekove”.

Come, invisible whom none may touch and handle.
Come, for you continue always unmoved, yet at every instant you are wholly in movement; you draw near to us who lie in hades, yet you remain higher than the heavens.
Come, for your name fills our hearts with longing and is ever on our lips; yet who you are and what your nature is, we cannot say or know.
Come, Alone to the alone.
Come, for you are yourself the desire that is within me.

The commemoration of the 318 Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council

The commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council is made on the Sunday before Pentecost, or the seventh Sunday after Pascha, which is why it is called Sunday of the Holy Fathers.

This holy Council was held in the city of Nicaea , in Bithynia, in Asia Minor, 325 at the time of St. Constantine the Great (305-337). This Council was called to remove the confusion of the false teaching created by Arius, a priest of Alexandria. He distorted the teaching saying that the Lord Christ, the Son of God, is not really God, but was created in time by God, and therefore is not the pre-eternal Son of God, equal in essence and being with God the Father.

The Emperor Constantine called all the bishops to the city of Nicaea in May in the year 325. This Council was attended by about 318 Holy Fathers. The Council condemned the Arian teaching and Arius and his supporters were issued anathemas, as neither he nor they would repent.

Then the Ecumenical Council, with divine wisdom, presented and expressed the one true faith of Christ’s Church regarding Him as the real and eternal Son of God and God, which the Church received from the beginning from the Lord and the Apostles. Succinctly expressed, that faith in the Holy Trinity, the Son of God and His incarnation for our salvation, is called the Creed, and the main job of this Council was the confirmation of that one, unique Creed for all believers.

Spomen svetih 318 otaca Prvog vaseljenskog sabora

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

We have to be at peace. It is better to suffer an insult than inflict an insult. If we endure an insult, the Lord will give us strength and peace. If we do not endure the offense, our conscience will not give us peace. The conscience is Divine judgment.

We can do all sorts of things but we will have neither peace nor repose. Our character traits (here on earth) are the basis for the transition to eternity. If one is peaceful and quiet, he goes to the line of saints and angels. The Lord awarded them the free grace of God, and in those souls are no characteristics of the world. One can constantly insult him but he does not offend. A man can beat him, and he does not get angry, because his soul is guided by the Holy Spirit.

They asked St. Seraphim of Sarov: “What is the goal of our life?” — “Returning to the arms of our Heavenly Father.”

We disturb our peace. Our Lord (then) leaves us with our thoughts — there is our suffering. There is no force that can destroy the mercy of God. So the martyrs did not feel suffering, and if they did, they were comforted by the silent Lord. When the grace of the Holy Spirit ignites the soul, it no longer feels suffering.

Pouke oca Tadeja

Treba da smo mirni. Bolje je trpeti uvredu, nego naneti uvredu. Ako pretrpimo uvredu, Gospod će nam dati snagu i mir.

Ako smo mirni i tihi idemo u red svetih i anđela.

REFLECTION ON VANITY

It is not always easy to conquer the spirit of vanity and conceit in oneself. In this, only the great spiritual directors have succeeded, primarily with God’s grace, with constant vigilance over their souls and with very delicate spiritual sensitivities and distinctions.

At one time, Abba Nisteroes was walking with one of his brethren. Suddenly, they spotted a serpent on the road. The brother quickly moved aside and the great Nisteroes fled after him. “Are you also afraid, father?” the monk asked Nisteroes. The elder replied: “No, my son, I am not afraid but I had to flee otherwise I would not have fled from the spirit of vanity.” That is: “Had I remained in place, you would have been amazed at me and I would have become vain from that!”

Sunday of the Blind Man.

Simplicity of faith argues with crafty unbelief. Faith, coming to the blind man who received sight, enlightened his mind’s eyes, and he clearly saw the truth. See how everything was logical for him. They ask him: what do you say of Him who gave you sight? He is a prophet, he answered, that is the messenger of God, clothed in miracle-working power. An indisputably true conclusion! But learned erudition does not want to see this trueness and seeks to evade its consequences. However, this being impossible, it approaches unlearned simplicity with the suggestion: give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. Simplicity of faith does not know how to connect these concepts, sinfulness and miracle-working, and expresses this openly: Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. What can one say against such deduction? But the logic of the unbelievers is obstinate, and even in the face of the obvious it is not ashamed to affirm that it does not know where he who opened the blind man’s eyes is from. Why herein is a marvellous thing, the sensible logic of faith says to them, that ye know not from whence He is, and yet He hath opened mine eyes. Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth His will, him he heareth. Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. If this man were not of God, He could do nothing (John 9:17–33). It would seem as though after this nothing remained other than to bow down before the power of such a conclusion. But learned erudition could not stand the sensible logic of faith, and drove it away… Go now, prove the truth of the faith to those whose mind has been corrupted with obstinate unbelief. This is the pattern of unbelievers of all times.

St. Theophan the Recluse

NEDELJA SLEPOG

Neprotivrečan i ispravan zaključak.

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

The Holy Fathers say: “Sow (plant) love, and you will reap love. Sow peace, and you will reap peace. “It is impossible to gain peace if we are full of envy and malice. If we do not break free from those hellish traits what will we do in eternity? Only God can change us. The spirit is connected through thoughts. As our character traits are here — so they cross over into eternity.

Pouke oca Tadeja

On reading scripture

The Word of God is food for the soul. The Word of God is both power and light for the soul. He who reads the Word of God gives food, power and light to his soul. All the saints emphasized the benefit of reading Holy Scripture. St. Seraphim of Sarov says: “The soul should be provided with the Word of God for the Word of God, as Gregory the Theologian says, is the bread of angels which feeds the soul that is hungry for God. But, above all, one should read the New Testament and the Psalter. From this proceeds illumination of the mind… It is very beneficial to read the Word of God in solitude and to read the entire Bible with understanding. For such a practice, above other good deeds, the Lord gives His mercy to man and fills him with the gift of understanding.”

Sv. Serafim Sarovski govori: „Dušu treba snabdevati slovom Božjim, jer je slovo Božje, kako veli Grigorije Bogoslov, hleb angelski, kojim se hrani duša, gladna Boga. No više svega treba čitati Novi Zavet i Psaltir. Od ovoga dolazi prosvećivanje razuma… Vrlo je korisno čitati slovo Božje u samoći, i pročitati svu Bibliju c razumevanjem. Za jedno takvo upražnjenje, izvan drugih dobrih dela, Gospod daje čoveku milost Svoju i ispunjava ga darom razumevanja.”

Sunday of the Samaritan Woman

The Samaritan woman’s fellow citizens said to her after two days with the Saviour in their midst, “Now we believe not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savio r of the world” (John 4:42). It happens this way with everyone. At first they are called to the Lord by an external word, or as for many now, simply by birth. But when they taste in practice what it is to live in the Lord, they no longer cleave to the Lord through their external affiliation with Christian society, but through their inner union with Him. It is necessary for all who are born in Christian societies to make this a law for themselves; that is, to not limit themselves to mere external affiliation with the Lord, but to seek to unite with Him inwardly, that they may always bear witness within themselves that they are standing in the truth. Why is this necessary? It is necessary to embody within oneself the truth of Christ. The truth of Christ is a restoration of what is fallen. Thus, put off the old man, which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts, and put on the new man, which is created after God in righteousness and true holiness (cf. Eph. 4:22–24), and you will know within yourself that the Lord Jesus Christ is in truth the Saviour—not only for the world, but also for you.

St. Theofan the Recluse

NEDELJA SAMARJANKE

READINGS FOR Sunday 5th Sunday after Pascha/The Samaritan Woman

Epistle: Acts 11:19-26, 29-30; Reader: Vanja Pavlovic Gospels: St. John 4:5-42

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

When the host of the house is burdened with family worries, no one has peace and rest because his thoughts, not even young children. That is why those in charge of the household should gives themselves over to the Lord, to pray to Him, and to understand that the Lord is almighty, that the Lord comforts us.

We have to forgive everyone from the heart. Inner Peace cannot be maintained as long as our conscience is distorting something. We need to quiet the conscience. We should forgive everyone from the heart. Without this there is no inner peace.

The Lord will give grace. Grace is divine power that is active everywhere, especially in souls that seek the Lord, the Source of Life. Peace from God is sown everywhere.

In the Old Testament it says, “My son, give me your heart.” (Prov. 23:26) God is the only comfort—to angels, to the saints, and to all who seek him. He is the only Infinite One.

We have no peace if we wrestle with our parents in our thoughts. The spirits of malice try by all means to lead us into sin against our parents. Then the spirits  gain power over us, and we think it’s somebody else’s fault. Many come to see this insight and correct their thinking. I always say this—some accept it and some are too proud. What we give is what we get.

Pouke oca Tadeja

U Starom Zavetu piše: “Sine, daj mi srce svoje.”
