Mystery of the Resurrection

How did the Lord Christ conquer this world, how did Christianity conquer this world? You know that in the beginning of Christianity the great and powerful Roman Empire persecuted Christians everywhere for 330 years. They did not defend themselves with guns and airplanes, no! They defended themselves through prayer and God’s help. And for 330 years they turned wolves into sheep. Recall the Savior’s words to His disciples: Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves (Mt 10:16). A great miracle took place, brethren: the wolves were turned into sheep, and the wolves did not devour the sheep, did not tear up and destroy them. What is this? What is this power? This is that power about which you heard today in the words of the Apostle Peter, when he says to Aeneas: Arise, and he immediately rises (Acts 9:34); and when he says to Tabitha: Arise, and she rises from the dead as from sleep (Acts 9:40). What is this, what happened to this world? A great mystery has been explained, the mystery of this world and the mystery of man. What does the Lord Christ’s Resurrection demonstrate? It demonstrates that man is an eternal being. Death is defeated – that is what the Lord Christ’s Resurrection means. Life Eternal is provided for all human existence. It was for this that the Lord came to this world.

St. Justin of Chelije

Tajna Vaskrsenje

Objašnjava se velika tajna, tajna ovoga sveta i tajna čoveka. Vaskrsenje Gospoda Hrista, šta pokazuje? Pokazuje da je čovek večno biće. Smrt je pobeđena – to znači Vaskrsenje Gospoda Hrista. I Život Večni osiguran svakome ljudskome biću.

Lessons from Fr. Thaddeus

Repentance is a change of life. А man has to go to a priest or his neighbor and tell him what disturbs his peace. As soon as our neighbors are participate in our suffering, we gain comfort and strength.

If we turn to the Source of Life, the Lord will give us strength to strengthen in ourselves thoughts full of good, as good thoughts, good wishes, give peace and comfort to all. We have to change (in our thoughts).

Our thoughts affect not only us, but all that surround us. We have to project good thoughts. The Lord commands us to love our enemies, not because of them, but for ourselves. We need to forgive all from the heart. When we forgive all from the heart, all is forgiven. We then are participants in peace, then peace brings joy and comfort to those around us. All persons feel our thoughts as peaceful, quiet.

Pouke oca Tadeja

Čim naši bližnji saučestvuju u našem stradanju mi dobijamo utehu i snagu.

Mi smo (tada) saučesnici mira, tada mir čini radost i utehu svima oko nas. Svi osećaju naše misli mirne, tihe.

Christ is risen! — Indeed he is risen!

Mid-Pentecost

On the Wednesday of the Paralytic, we celebrate the Feast of Mid-Pentecost.

The Feast of Pascha continues to be celebra-ted. The Crucifixion and the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ deserve believers’ daily attention.  Believers find meaning for their lives in the Crucifixion and Resurrection.

Believers benefit from the Resurrected Christ to the degree they are willing to invest in drawing near to Christ. Drawing near to Christ involves constancy of prayer and attention. Diversions exist which are perilous to the inattentive soul.

The Lord Jesus Christ promised the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Lord Jesus Christ said: “The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things…”(Jn.14:26)

Each day God’s Holy Church moves closer to the Feast of Pentecost and the celebration of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. Each day carries with it the potential for the fullness of the life with God.

Believers do well to devote as much time as possible each day to prayer and mental consideration of being with God..

Praying to Christ continuously combats sin. Purity of heart and mind comes with the continued presence of Christ in the heart and mind. Weakening of vigilance against sin leads to destruction and away from the Kingdom of God.

During this time of Paschal celebration, rejoice and contemplate the defeat of death and the meaning of the Empty Tomb. Look forward with great anticipation to the arrival of the Feast of Pentecost.

Give thanks to the Crucified and Resurrected Christ. Give thanks to God for the innumerable blessings each day. Give thanks to God for the love manifested by Christ on the Cross and Christ arising from the grave.

The Myrrh-Bearing Women.

The tireless women! They would not give sleep to their eyes nor slumber to their eyelids (cf. Ps. 132) until they found their Beloved! But the men as if dragged their feet: they went to the tomb, saw it empty, and remained in confusion about what it could mean because they did not see Him. But does this mean that they had less love than the women? No, here was a reasoning love which feared making a mistake due to the high price of this love and its object. When they too saw and touched Him, then each of them, not with his tongue, like Thomas, but with his heart confessed: my Lord and my God (John 20:28), and already nothing could separate them from the Lord. The myrrh-bearers and the Apostles are an image of the two sides of our life: feeling and reasoning. Without feeling life is not life; without reasoning life is blind, offers little sound fruit and much is wasted. We must combine both. Let feeling go forward and arouse; let reason determine the time, place, method and generally the practical arrangement of what the heart suggests for us to do. Within, the heart comes first, but in practical application, reason comes first. When the feelings become educated in discerning good and evil, then perhaps it will be possible to rely on the heart alone. Just as shoots, flowers and fruits grow naturally from a living tree, so does goodness alone emerge from the heart, rationally mingling into the course our life.

Zato treba steći i jedno i drugo. Osećanje neka ide napred i neka pobuđuje; rasuđivanje neka određuje vreme, mesto, način i, uopšte, ustrojstvo bića onoga što srce nagovesti da treba ostvariti. Unutra – srce ide napred, a u praksi – rasuđivanje.

Sayings of Fr. Thaddeus

Peace and joy to all from the Lord, for peace and joy are the most important treasures of this world and the other world. That is what we all yearn for. We could have whatever we want on this earth, and yet we could be without peace and joy. And peace comes from the Source of Peace, from the Lord. When the Lord spoke to His disciples, when they closed the doors for fear of the Jews, the first thing He said to them was “Peace be with you.”

The Lord will reward you with peace if you make peace and turn toward the Absolute Good, and the Absolute Good is the Lord God. He wants us to have a divine attribute — humility is that divine attribute. Wherever humility reigns, whether in the family or in society, it produces peace and joy.

Every good and every evil stems from thoughts, because we are thinking machines. We even have an impact on plant life, as plants also have a nervous system. Everyone is looking for peace, solace and love.

Pouke oca Tadeja

Repeat message:
DON’T FORGET TO DRESS PROPERLY for Church. We show our respect for God by coming to Church dressed at least as well as if we were going to a special event at the house of a friend or to the home of our “boss.” Who is a better friend than God? Who is the Lord of all? Gentlemen: please avoid T-shirts and blue jeans.Ladies: please dress modestly (skirts not too short, tops not too open). With the warm weather coming, some of us might want to wear shorts, or tops that show our midriffs. This is most inappropriate for Church. Let’s have both our prayers AND what we wear to Church be well-pleasing to God.

SAINTS CYRIL AND METHODIUS EQUAL TO THE APOSTLES

Saints Cyril and Methodius were brothers from Thessalonica of distinguished and wealthy parents, Leo and Maria. The older brother Methodius spent ten years as an officer among the Macedonian Slavs and thus learned the Slavic language. After that Methodius withdrew to Mount Olympus and dedicated himself to the monastic life of asceticism. It was here that Cyril (Constantine) later joined him. When the Khazarite king, Kagan, requested preachers of the Faith of Christ from Emperor Michael III then, by command of the emperor, these two brothers were found and sent among the Khazars. Convincing King Kagan of the Faith of Christ, they baptized him along with a great number of his chief assistants and even a greater number of the people. After a period of time, they returned to Constantinople where they compiled the Slavonic alphabet consisting of thirty-eight letters and proceeded to translate ecclesiastical books from Greek into Slavonic. At the request of Prince Rastislav, they traveled to Moravia where they spread and established the devout Faith and multiplied books and distributed them to the priests to teach the youth. At the request of the pope, Cyril traveled to Rome where he became ill and died on February 14, 867 A.D. Then Methodius returned to Moravia and labored to strengthen the Faith of Christ among the Slavs until his death. Following his death – he died in the Lord on April 6, 885 A.D. – his disciples, THE FIVE FOLLOWERS, with St. Clement, the bishop at the head, crossed the Danube River and descended to the south into Macedonia, where from Ohrid they continued their labor among the Slavs begun by Cyril and Methodius in the north.

Holy Bishop Nikolaj of Serbia

CHRIST IS RISEN

The ancient Orthodox faith in the resurrection of the crucified Christ, and crucified justice in general, is often reaffirmed and renewed by legions of new Serbian martyrs for Christ. Here is one of many examples of our time and our generation:

When the godless authorities in Kraljevo [October 1941] lined up 2200 citizens of various age and sex, innocent, unarmed, to shoot them because of 22 of their soldiers who died in battle with the national Serbian Chetniks, one devout man, Dragoslav, the sacristan of our cathedral, standing in line, peacefully took to read the New Testament. Noting that the enemy was about to fire a machine gun, he closed the holy book and put it in his bosom, and then he cried with a loud voice:

“Do not fear death, my brothers, CHRIST IS RISEN!”

At that the response boomed like a storm from two thousand throats as one: “INDEED HE IS RISEN!”

The discharge thundered and 2,200 Christian bodies fell to the ground, while 2200 souls ascended to the heavenly army of martyrs for Christ. Because even if one of them were a sinner, like the thief on the cross, he went to heaven because he acknowledged and confessed the resurrection of Christ before his death.

By this I am not telling you the history of sorrow, but the history of the glory of your people. I refrain from telling you more, so you not become proud. But know that the virtues of ancestors do not save careless descendants. Let us therefore strive till death to stand in spiritual and moral vigilance to maintain the high level of our cross-bearing ancestors.

Sveti Vladika NIKOLAJ SRPSKI:

HRISTOS VOSKRESE

No ja vam ovim ne kazujem istoriju žalosti, no istoriju slave vašeg naroda.

PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING SOLDIERS IN YOUR PRAYERS: Thomas Vukcevic; Benjamin Pappas; Paul Campbell, Michael Rapasky; Brady Sexton, Jeffrey Izo, Michael Greenwood, James Koch, Jacob Monnin, Adam Paich, John Stanz, Peter Mrvos, Michael Antecki, Matthew Ross, Steven Marrocco. These soldiers are remembered at the Proskomedia (Service of Preparation) before every Divine Liturgy. “BE NOT FAITHLESS, BUT BELIEVING”

St.Basil of Ostrog appears to a priest of weak faith

It was in 1940 that bishop Nikolai asked the Very Rev. Jovan Boskovic from Orja Luka (municipality of Danilovgrad), “Do you believe, Reverend Father, that God’s saints live?”

“How can I not believe that, when they have themselves appeared to me and witnessed that they are living!”

One day my popadia (priest’s wife) asked me to go to Ostrog with an offering for some misfortune that had occurred in our family. I was somewhat grieved and angry. “What should I bring?”, I asked. “Leave those dead bones in the Ostrog cave to rest in peace! It is the living you ought to turn to for help!”

The day passed. That night I had a vision of St.Basil. He struck me with his staff and shouted at me, full of wrath, “I am alive, not dead as you think! And be not faithless, but believing!” In great fear I jumped from my bed and asked popadija for the offering she prepared for my pilgrimage. I immediately went to Ostrog and took the offering to St.Basil. Since then I have been firm in my belief that God’s Saints are living, not dead!”

Sunday Bulletin Pascha May 5, 2013

Volume 49; Number 19 May 5, 2013

Paschal Greetings from Patriarch Irinej

If there is a day among all days for celebration, it is today — the day we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ our God. Thanks to this holy day, all the days of mankind — from the beginning to the end of the world — receive their true significance, and all that has happened and is happening in those days acquires its real meaning.

Dear brothers and sisters, our spiritual children, let us rejoice in our Resurrected Lord! By rejoicing in Him we are rejoicing in ourselves because in Him we become eternal and immortal. In worshipping Him, the Resurrected One, we worship eternal Life! By partaking of His Body and Blood in Communion, we become one with Him and we gain life eternal. In the Resurrected Christ we discover all of our ancestors. All that which is good in the history of the world and in the history of our people rests in Him, and it becomes eternal and indestructible. In the Resurrected Christ we are in communion with our Saints, and they with us! In the Resurrected Christ justice always triumphs! With Him and in Him it will triumph even in our days! If the Resurrected Christ is with us and we with Him, then – who will be against us? With these thoughts and wishes, we greet you with the most joyous salutation:

Christ is Risen!    Indeed He is Risen!

U Vaskrslome Hristu otkrivamo sve naše pretke. Njime i u Njemu ona će pobediti i u naše dane!

Hristos vaskrse – vaistinu vaskrse!

READINGS FOR Sunday Pascha/Vaskrs

Epistle: Phil 4:4-9;   Readers: Ryan Sullivan & Miroslav Mijic Gospel: St.John 12:1-18

CHRIST IS RISEN!

If there are devout and God loving people here, let them enjoy this beautiful, radiant festival. If there are prudent servants, enter joyously into the Lord’s joy. Whoever may be spent from fasting, enjoy now your reward. Whoever has toiled from the first hour, receive today your just settlement. If any came after the third hour, celebrate gratefully. If any of you arrived after the sixth, have no misgivings, you have lost nothing. If some have been as late as the ninth, come forward, do not be at a loss. If any of you have arrived only at the eleventh hour, do not be dismayed for being late. The Master is gracious: He accepts the last even as the first; He gives rest to those of the eleventh as well as to those who have labored from the first; He is lenient with the last while looking after the first; to the one He gives, to the other He gives freely; He accepts the labors and welcomes the effort; honors the deed, but commends the intent.

So, all of you, enter into the joy of our Lord: first and second, share the bounty. Rich and poor alike, celebrate together. Sober or heedless, honor the day. Those who fasted and those who did not, rejoice today. The table is full, everyone fare sumptuously. The calf is fatted; no one go away hungry. Everyone, savor the banquet of faith; relish the riches of His goodness.

St. John Chrysostom

Hristos Vaskrse

Sveti Jovan Zlatoust
