Palm Sunday

Many people went out and met the Lord when He, as a king, triumphantly entered into Jerusalem. Who among them did not cry out then, Hosanna to the Son of David! (Matt. 21:15)? But only four days passed, and the same crowd with the same tongues cried, Crucify Him, crucify Him! (John 19:6). An amazing change! But why should we be surprised? Do we not do the very same thing, when upon receiving the holy Mysteries of the Body and Blood of the Lord, we barely leave the church before forgetting everything—both our reverence and God’s mercy toward us. We give ourselves over as before to self-pleasing deeds—at first small and then also large. Perhaps even before four days have passed, although we do not cry, “Crucify Him!” we will crucify the Lord within ourselves. The Lord sees all of this, and suffers. Glory to Thy longsuffering, O Lord!

St. Theophan the Recluse

CVETNA NEDELJA

I sve to Gospod vidi i trpi! Slava dugotrpeljivosti Tvojoj, Gospode!

Stewardship Reflection
Palm Sunday

Come, O faithful, let us pass from one holy feast to another!
Let us hasten from the palms and branches to the solemn celebration of Christ’s saving Passion!
We shall see Him voluntarily suffer for our sake!
Let us offer Him a fitting hymn of thanksgiving: “Fountain of tender mercy and haven of salvation,
O Lord, glory to You!”

Podajmo Njemu samo dostojne hvale pesmu Izvore velike milosti i nebo spasenja, Gospode slava Tebi.

The Palm Sunday Evening Vesper service includes many hymns that reflect upon Christ and His entry from Palm Sunday to Holy Week. When reading the above hymn, we are drawn to the words voluntary, suffer and Salvation. Jesus Christ died for our sins – He died on the Cross for our Salvation. He did this voluntarily and suffered for all the sins that were committed in this world. Why, then, do we question Stewardship or the care and support of our Church when we so visibly can see what Christ went through for us? Do we voluntarily give of our Time, Talents and Treasures? Do we suffer to help our parish like Christ suffered? Do we reflect upon our own Salvation and the fact that we will be judged by Jesus based upon our works and what we have done with what God has provided for us?

By His stripes, we are healed!

Stewardship Reflection

St. Mary of Egypt

Today, on the fifth Sunday of Great Lent, we commemorate St. Mary of Egypt. St. Mary had lived a life of debauchery and on many occasions sold her body for things such as food and travel. She departed her land and upon arriving in the Holy City, followed the crowd that was thronging towards the Church of the Resurrection, it being the day of the Exaltation of the Cross. When she reached the threshold of the Church, an invisible force prevented her entering in spite of repeated efforts on her part, although the other pilgrims were able to go in without hindrance. Left alone in a corner of the Narthex, she began to realize that it was the impurity of her life that was preventing her approaching the holy Wood. She burst into tears and smote her breast and, seeing an icon of the Mother of God, made this prayer to her: “O Sovereign Lady, who didst bear God in the flesh, I know that I should not dare to look upon thine icon, thou who are pure in soul and body, because, debauched as I am, I must fill thee with disgust. But as the God born of thee became man in order to call sinners to repentance, come to my aid! Allow me to go into the church and prostrate before His Cross. And as soon as I have seen the Cross, I promise that I will renounce the world and all pleasures, and follow the path of salvation that thou willest to show me.”

She felt herself suddenly freed from the power that had held her and was able to enter the Church. There she fervently venerated the Holy Cross and then, returning to the icon of the Mother of God, declared herself ready to follow the path that the Virgin would show her. A voice replied to her from on high: “If you cross the Jordan, you will find rest.”

As we reflect upon St. Mary’s life, we can also consider 1 Corinthians 6:20 “you were bought at a price, therefore honor God with your bodies, and your Spirit, for they are His.”  When we think about the unfortunate way that St. Mary used her body…but through repentance was saved and the fact that our Salvation was bought with a price – Christ’s body being sacrificed on the Cross for our sins… we must ask and think about honoring God with our bodies and spirit with a focus on our Talents. Are there specific tasks that we can complete to help our Church? Does our profession provide the opportunity to assist our parish? Can we extend the daily labor that we do to include God’s house? Whether a painter, doctor, carpenter, lawyer, gardener, accountant or any other skills – can we provide them as Stewardship to our Church?

We are called to honor and love God, to provide for and support His Church.

Starateljaka Poruka

Sveta Marija Egipatska

Danas, pete nedelje Velikog Posta mi slavimo Sv.

THE VENERABLE JOHN OF THE LADDER
John Climacus is the author of “The Ladder of Divine Ascent.” John came to Mt. Sinai as a sixteen year old youth and remained there, first as a novice under obedience, and afterwards as a recluse, and finally as abbot of Sinai until his eightieth year. He died around the year 563 A.D. He remained under obedience with his spiritual father, Martyrius, for nineteen years. St. Anastasius of Sinai, seeing the young John, prophesied that he would become the abbot of Sinai. After the death of his spiritual father, John withdrew into a cave, where he lived a difficult life of asceticism for twenty years. At the insistence of the brotherhood, John agreed to become abbot and directed the salvation of the souls of men with zeal and love. From someone John heard a criticism that he talked too much. Not being angered by this, John however remained silent for an entire year and did not utter a word until the brothers implored him to speak and to continue to teach them his God-given wisdom. During the time of his silence in the cave, John wrote many worthwhile books, of which the most glorious is “The Ladder.” This book is still read by many, even today. In this book, John describes the method of elevating the soul to God, as ascending a ladder.
Holy Bishop Nicholai
Prepodobni Jovan Lestvičnik
Pisac znamenite Lestvice.

From the Ladder of divine ascent
The Christian is one who imitates Christ in thought, word and deed, as far as is possible for human beings, believing rightly and blamelessly in the Holy Trinity.
The lover of God is he who lives in communion with all that is natural and sinless, and as far as he is able neglects nothing good.
The self-controlled man is he who in the midst of temptations, snares and turmoil, strives with all his might to imitate the ways of Him who is free from such.
The monk is he who within his earthly and soiled body toils towards the rank and state of the bodiless angels.
The monk clings only to the commandments and words of God in every season and place and matter.
A monk is he who strictly controls his nature and unceasingly watches over his senses.
A monk is he who keeps his body in chastity, his mouth pure and his mind illumined.
Withdrawal from the world is voluntary hatred of prized material things, a denial of nature for the attainment of what is above nature.
St. John of the Ladder

THE ANNUNCIATION

When the fullness of time had come, as prophesied by Daniel the Prophet, and when God was pleased to fulfill His promise to the banished Adam and to the Prophets, the great Archangel Gabriel appeared in the chamber of the All-Holy Virgin and, as some priestly writers wrote, precisely at that same moment when she held open the book of the Prophet Isaiah and was contemplating his great prophecy: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son!” (Isaiah 7:13). Gabriel appeared in all of his angelic brightness and saluted her: “Rejoice, highly favored one! The Lord is with you” (St. Luke 1:28), and the rest in order as it is written in the Gospel of the saintly Luke. With this angelic annunciation and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Virgin, the salvation of mankind and restoration of all creation began. The history of the New Testament was opened by the words of the Archangel Gabriel: “Rejoice, highly favored one” This is to imply that the New Testament was to signify joy to mankind and to all created things.

Holy Bishop Nicholai

Blagovesti

No kada se navrši vreme prorečeno Danilom prorokom, i kada Bog blagovoli ispuniti obećanje svoje izgnanom Adamu i prorocima, javi se veliki arhangel Gavril u odaji Presvete Djeve, i to, kako neki svešteni pisci pišu, u trenutku baš kada je ona držala otvorenog proroka Isaiju i razmišljala o njegovom velikom proročanstvu: Gle, devojka će začeti i rodiće sina! (Is. 7, 14).

READINGS FOR Sunday Annunciation/3rd Sunday of Lent/Sunday of the Cross

Epistles: Heb. 2:11-18; & Heb. 4:14-5:6;                           Readers: Serafima Zdjelar & Milica Gavric
Gospels: St. Luke 1:24-38; & Mark 8:34-9:1

Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me (Mark 8:34).

It is impossible to follow the Lord as a cross-bearer without a cross, and everyone who follows Him, unfailingly goes with a cross. What is this cross? It is all sorts of inconveniences, burdens and sorrows—weighing heavily both internally and externally—along the path of conscientious fulfillment of the commandments of the Lord, in a life according to the spirit of His instructions and demands. Such a cross is so much a part of a Christian that wherever there is a Christian, there is this cross, and where there is no such cross, there is no Christian. Abundant privileges and a life of pleasure do not suit a true Christian. His task is to cleanse and reform himself. He is like a sick person, who needs cauterization, or amputation; how can this be without pain? He wants to tear himself away from the captivity of a strong enemy; but how can this be without struggle and wounds? He must walk counter to all practices surrounding him; but how can he sustain this without inconvenience and constraint? Rejoice as you feel the cross upon yourself, for it is a sign that you are following the Lord on the path of salvation which leads to heaven. Endure a bit. The end is just around the corner, as well as the crowns!

St. Theophan the Recluse

Potrpi malo. Jer, brzo će kraj, a za njim – venci!

Sv. Photius of Constantinople: “A fast pleasing to God is one that includes both abstinence from food as well as abstinence from all sin, hatred, envy, gossip, inappropriate jokes, idle words and other evil. The one who fasts only physically, but does not try to grow in virtue, is like a man who built a beautiful house, but allows snakes and scorpions to live in it. ”

Sv.
