Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica

Gregory’s father was an eminent official at the court of Emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus. The gifted Gregory, completing his secular studies, did not want to enter the service of the imperial court, but withdrew to the Holy Mountain and was tonsured a monk. He lived a life of asceticism in the Monastery of Vatopedi and the Great Lavra. He led the struggle against the heretic Barlaam and finally defeated him. He was consecrated as Metropolitan of Thessalonica in the year 1347. He is glorified as an ascetic, a theologian, a hierarch and a miracle-worker. The Most-holy Theotokos, St. John the Theologian, St. Demetrius, St. Anthony the Great, St. John Chrysostom and angels of God appeared to him at different times. He governed the Church in Thessalonica for thirteen years, of which he spent one year in slavery under the Saracens in Asia. He entered peacefully into rest in the year 1360, and took up his habitation in the Kingdom of Christ. His relics repose in Thessalonica, where a beautiful church is dedicated to him.

St. Gregory Palamas learned the importance of Christian Education

After St. Gregory had spent three years in stillness in a cell of the Great Lavra, it was necessary for him to go out among the people and benefit them with his accumulated knowledge and experience. God revealed this necessity to him through an extraordinary vision: One day, as though in a light sleep, Gregory saw himself holding a vessel in his hand full to overflowing with milk. Gradually, the milk turned into wine which likewise spilled over the rim, and drenched his hands and garments. Then a radiant youth appeared and said: “Why would you not give others of this wonderful drink that you are wasting so carelessly, or are you not aware that this is the gift of God’s grace?” To this Gregory replied: “But if there is no one in our time who feels the need for such a drink, to whom shall I give it?” Then the youth said: “Whether there are some or whether there are none thirsty for such a drink, you are obligated to fulfill your debt and not neglect the gift of God.” Gregory interpreted the milk as the common understanding of the people regarding moral life and conduct, and the wine as theological knowledge.

Sv. Grigorije Palama je naučio potrebe veronauke.

Kada je Sv. Grigorije proveo tri godine na bezmolviju u jednoj keliji Sv. Lavre, trebalo je da izađe među ljude i koristi ljudima svojim sabranim znanjem i iskustvom. To mu Bog stavi do znanja kroz jedno vanredno viđenje.

March 24, 2013 Sunday Bulletin

Volume 49; Number 13 March 24, 2013

And Jesus said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

In Jesus’ Passion, before His death, in the Garden of Gethsemane, an angel appeared to Him, strengthening Him. At the time of His Resurrection, angels descended to His tomb. At His Ascension from earth to heaven, two angels in white apparel came down and showed themselves to the disciples. After His ascension, angels often appeared to His apostles, and later to very many of the righteous, the martyrs and the saints. Did not Stephen, the first martyr, see the heavens opened? Did not the Apostle Paul ascend to the third heaven? Were not innumerable heavenly wonders, in time and eternity, revealed to the Apostle and Evangelist John? Through to our own day, angels have appeared to many of those with pure hearts and God-bearing souls; and many penitents, their sins forgiven, have seen the heavens opened. Oh how many, many times, up to the present day, have the Lord Jesus’ words about the opened heavens and the descent and ascent of the angels been proven true!

Let us therefore draw near to the Lord Jesus, who loves mankind, and while all our days have not yet been counted, let us confess His name as the only saving Name, and let us cry for help–the only help that is constant and brings salvation. Holy Bishop Nicholai

Nije li sveti prvomučenik Stefan video nebo otvoreno? Nije li se apostol Pavle uspeo do trećega neba? Nisu li apostolu i jevanđelistu Jovanu otkrivena bezbrojna čuda nebesa, i vremena i večnosti? I do dana današnjega mnogim čistim i bogonosnim dušama javljaju se angeli, i mnogi pokajani i od greha oprošteni vide nebo otvoreno. O, koliko i koliko puta su se do danas obistinile reči Gospoda Isusa o otvorenom nebu i o silazećim i uzlazećim angelima!

Pritecimo s toga čovekoljubivome Gospodu Isusu i dok još nisu svi naši dani odbrojani, ispovedimo ime Njegovo, kao jedino spasavajuće ime, a zavapimo za pomoć, jedinu nevarljivu i spasonosnu pomoć.

READINGS FOR Sunday Sunday of Orthodoxy/1st Sunday of Lent

Epistle: Heb. 11:24-26, 32-40, 12:1-2;     Reader: Jason Delmont Gospel: St. John 1:43-51.

Fasting: It’s not just about food…

Fasting is an important spiritual discipline of the Orthodox Christian tradition. For young people, it can seem like a daunting and overwhelming task. Especially during the longer fasting periods, like Great Lent, it is hard for ANY Orthodox Christian to keep fasting in the right perspective. It is easy to focus on what we “can’t” have instead of why we fast.

Also, it is easy to forget about fasting from things in addition to certain foods. What happens if we diligently follow the fast, but we say or do negative things? During these fasting periods, we have an opportunity to refocus on our words and actions to help us truly transform our lives.

1) Fasting from Food

Any athlete training for a big event prepares physically through exercise AND diet. There are certain foods that can help or hurt their preparation. Athletes do not look at this preparation as a punishment. Instead, they know that this preparation will give them the proper fuel and strength to accomplish the challenges that lie ahead for them.

Just like an athlete, Orthodox Christians physically prepare for the Eucharist and the Lord’s Resurrection. The Orthodox Christian tradition has given us certain guidelines for fasting so that we know HOW to best prepare ourselves to receive Christ. If we practice by abstaining from certain foods, we can build our strength to abstain from the more difficult temptations in life.

2) Fasting from Words

It is said time and time again… Although what goes INTO your mouth is very important, we must also focus on what comes OUT of our mouths. Fasting from what we say can be accomplished in many ways: don’t gossip, don’t say mean things, don’t criticize others, don’t argue. The things we say can impact our spiritual health and the spiritual health of others because we are “consuming” hate, jealousy, and malice into our hearts. Instead of wasting our time on the negative, use your words of kindness, compassion, love, and understanding to make a positive, Christ-like impact!

3) Fasting from Actions

Finally, we can make a decision to abstain from certain things we do. Think about the amount of time we spend on the internet, talking on the phone, watching TV, texting, etc. We can even take this reflection a step further… What if we considered all of the time we waste on bad habits or negative actions? During Great Lent, we can fast from actions that do not bring us closer to God. Instead, we will have more time to help others, to participate in lenten services, to pray, and to spend time with our family and friends that love us!

The meaning of the fast is in the Lenten services

The following prayer can only be heard at the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, which is served on Wednesday evening during Lent.

O Almighty Master, who is wisdom has fashioned all creation, who through Thine ineffable providence and great goodness has led us to these all-revered days for purificaiton of souls and bodies, for restraint of passions, and for hope of the resurrection, who during the forty days did put into the hands of Thy servitor Moses the tables in letters divinely inscribed, grant unto us also, O Good One, to fight the good fight, to conplete the course of the fast, to preserve the faith undivided, to crush the heads of invisible serpents, to be shown to be conquerers of sins, and without condemnation alto to attain unto and worship the holy Resurrection….

Sunday Bulletin March 17, 2013

Volume 49; Number 12 March 17, 2013

But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

And who will forgive us our sins, if God won’t? No one, either in heaven or on earth; no one at all. Men will not forgive us, because we do not forgive them, and God will not forgive us because men do not forgive us. Where are we then, and where shall we be? We shall live out our days under a mountain of sin, and in the next life the weight of that mountain will grow even greater through all eternity. Let us therefore practice not returning insult for insult, evil for evil, or paying off sin by sin.

When you see a drunkard fallen into the mud, will you lie in the mud beside him? Or will you try to pick him up and pull him out of the mud? Every sin is mud, and every passion is drunkenness. If your brother has rolled his soul in the mud of sin, why do you have to make your soul lie in that same mud? So restrain yourself from that which your brother does, and hasten to lift him out and clean him off, that your heavenly Father will lift you out and clean you off from all your sins, and place you among His angels at the Last Judgment.

Holy Bishop Nicholai

READINGS FOR Sunday Cheese-fare Sunday/Forgiveness Sunday

Epistle: Rom. 13:11-14:4;     Reader: Vanja Pavlovic    Gospel: St. Matthew 6:14-21.

MESSAGE ON THE COMMENCEMENT OF HOLY AND GREAT LENT

Blessed be the upcoming Great Paschal Lent which takes us on an ascetical voyage as a model of how we should sojourn through life, knowing that glorious Christ’s Resurrection is fulfillment of His promise for our own eternal life in Him.

This Sunday we look to forgiveness as we enter the holy journey of Great Lent.  On this day we are reminded of Adam and Eve’s banishment from Paradise and of their failure to remain faithful to the gift of personal communion with God. To forgive is to reject the hopeless “dead-ends” of human relations and to refer them to Christ. Forgiveness is truly a “breakthrough” of the Kingdom into this sinful and fallen world. Only a repentant heart can return us to unity, solidarity, and love.

Christ, the Savior of the world, opens the door of Paradise to everyone who follows Him, and the Church, by revealing to us the beauty of the Kingdom, makes our life a pilgrimage toward our heavenly fatherland.

“Let us begin the time of fasting in light!
Preparing ourselves for the spiritual efforts.
Let us purify our soul; let us purify our body.
As from food, let us abstain from all passion
And enjoy the virtues of the spirit,
So that perfected in time by love
We may all be made worthy to see
The Passion of Christ and the Holy Pascha
In spiritual joy!”

As the sacred hymnography of the Church urges us, all the ascetic elements—fasting, abstinence, frugality, restriction of personal desires, intense prayer, and confession—are essential to the period of Great Lent. They are preconditions for our Eucharistic communion with God and movement of love, reunion and harmony with others.

Let us embrace this Lenten journey with gratitude and the desire to follow our Holy Tradition as our Orthodox Saints and ancestors did for centuries before us, perpetually carrying the faith that illuminated the road toward salvation.

In doing so we will walk together with Christ to Golgotha and rejoice with Him on the Feast of Feasts! Just as the sacrifice on the Cross takes its meaning from the Resurrection, so all our Lenten efforts find their fulfillment in Holy Communion. The whole human being is saved because “the human universe” is saved by the Resurrection. And in order to receive the gift of the Resurrection and be imbued with the consolation that saves man, we have to have passed through the entire Great Lent of the trials of life.

It’s that time of year again…

In the past, our parishioners have been very generous in donating whatever pussy willows they have had growing in their backyards. We thank you for your past contributions, and hope you will consider donating again this year. In spite of bad weather last week, pussy willows are almost to their peak and ready to be cut. Please cut your pussy willows this coming week, call Father Rastko and let him know when you will be coming. We will store them in the Hall cooler, ready for use on Lazarus Saturday (Vrbica) and Palm Sunday (Cveti). Veliko Hvala!    Thank you very much!

FISH FRY Friday 4–7. Eat in our take out. Phone orders taken from 4 to 7 at 825-9364. The fish fries will continue throughout April. Please support our parish dinners and enjoy delicious fish at the same time. Thank you, workers!
