The Holy Martyrs Menas, Hermogenes and Eugraphus
Both Menas and Hermogenes were born in Athens. They both lived in Byzantium, being held in great honor by the emperor and the people. When a dispute flared up between the Christians and the pagans in Alexandria, Emperor Maximin dispatched Menas to calm the disturbance and to root out the Christians from the city. Menas went and restored peace, but he declared himself a Christian and converted many pagans to the true Faith by his eloquence and many miracles. Hearing of this, the emperor sent Hermogenes to punish Menas and to smother Christianity. Hermogenes brought Menas to trial, cut off his feet and tongue, gouged out his eyes, and then cast him into prison. In prison, the Lord Jesus Himself appeared to Menas, healing and comforting His suffering servant. Seeing Menas miraculously healed, Hermogenes was baptized. He began to preach the powerful Christian Faith and was consecrated as Bishop of Alexandria. Then the enraged Maximin went to Alexandria himself. Eugraphus, secretary and friend of St. Menas, appeared before the tribunal and cried out to the emperor’s face: “I too am a Christian!’” The emperor became enraged, drew his sword and beheaded St. Eugraphus. Following this, the evil emperor ordered the executioner to behead St. Menas and St. Hermogenes.
Holy Bishop Nicholai, Prologue of Ohrid
Sveti mučenici Mina, Ermogen i Evgraf
I Mina i Ermogen behu Atinjani rodom. Mina ode i uspostavi mir, no objavi sebe hrišćaninom, i obrati mnoge neznabošce u veru pravu rečitošću i čudesima mnogim. Tada razjareni Maksimin sam ode u Aleksandriju.Javi se pred sudilištem Evgraf, tajnik i prijatelj svetog Mine, i viknu caru u lice; “I ja sam hrišćanin!” Car se zbesi, trže mač i poseče svetog Evgrafa. Potom naredi nečestivi car, te dželati mačem posekoše svete Minu i Ermogena.

READINGS FOR Today 29th Sunday/ Holy Martyrs Menas, Hermogenes & Eugraphus
Epistle: Col.3:12-16; Reader: Bojan Vanovac; Gospel: St. Luke 17:12-19
Twenty Ninth Sunday After Pentecost
Ten lepers were healed, but only one came to thank the Lord. Isn’t there generally a similar proportion of people who are grateful after receiving benefactions from the Lord? Who has not received good things; or, rather, what do we have in us, or what ever happens to us that is not good for us? Even so, is everyone grateful to God, and does everyone give thanks for everything? There are even those who permit themselves to ask, “Why did God give us existence? It would be better for us not to exist.” God gave you existence so that you would be in eternal bliss; He gave you existence as a gift, as a gift He has furnished you with every means for attaining eternal bliss. The job depends on you: you need only to labour a bit for this. You say, “But I have only sorrows, poverty, diseases, misfortunes.” So what? These also are some of the ways to attain eternal blessedness. Be patient. Your entire life is less than a moment compared with eternity. Even if you had to suffer unceasingly your entire life, against eternity it is nothing; and you still have moments of consolation. Do not look at the present, but at what is prepared for you in the future, and concern yourself with making yourself worthy of that; then you will not notice the sorrows. They will all be swallowed up by unquestioning hope in eternal consolations, and your lips will never cease to utter thanks.
Međutim, ti imaš i časove utehe. Blagodarnost tada neće zatajiti u tvojim ustima.

The Parish Council
This month is typically the time of the year when the Churches elect their new parish councils. Following is a reflection on the Stewardship of serving in this capacity.
When one is called into service by God’s Grace one is provided with the opportunity to put aside all personal desires and agendas for the sake of promoting the Good News of Jesus Christ. It is for this reason that a Parish Council Member must regularly participate in this Good News by living a Christ-centered Life. Ideally, this means that the Parish Council Members’ life revolves around the Holy Eucharist—moving from one moment of Communion with God to the next. If our focus is constantly on increasing our Communion with God, how often do you think we will get caught up in the petty squabbles of this world?
A Christ-centered life is also a life of service; and all Parish Council Members are called not to be served, but to serve—just as Christ does. This service should be focused in a life of love. Reaching out in compassion to the Church community, a parish council member is responsible for fulfilling his or her duties to the fullest extent possible. He or she is to be the model Steward—continuously offering of their Time, Talents and Treasures in service of the Gospel of Christ. One has only to take the example of Christ washing the feet of the disciples to see the extent to which this sacrificial service is to go.
