The Holy Martyrs Menas, Hermogenes and Eugraphus

Both Menas and Hermogenes were born in Athens. They both lived in Byzantium, being held in great honor by the emperor and the people. When a dispute flared up between the Christians and the pagans in Alexandria, Emperor Maximin dispatched Menas to calm the disturbance and to root out the Christians from the city. Menas went and restored peace, but he declared himself a Christian and converted many pagans to the true Faith by his eloquence and many miracles. Hearing of this, the emperor sent Hermogenes to punish Menas and to smother Christianity. Hermogenes brought Menas to trial, cut off his feet and tongue, gouged out his eyes, and then cast him into prison. In prison, the Lord Jesus Himself appeared to Menas, healing and comforting His suffering servant. Seeing Menas miraculously healed, Hermogenes was baptized. He began to preach the powerful Christian Faith and was consecrated as Bishop of Alexandria. Then the enraged Maximin went to Alexandria himself. Eugraphus, secretary and friend of St. Menas, appeared before the tribunal and cried out to the emperor’s face: “I too am a Christian!’” The emperor became enraged, drew his sword and beheaded St. Eugraphus. Following this, the evil emperor ordered the executioner to behead St. Menas and St. Hermogenes.

Holy Bishop Nicholai, Prologue of Ohrid

Sveti mučenici Mina, Ermogen i Evgraf

I Mina i Ermogen behu Atinjani rodom. Mina ode i uspostavi mir, no objavi sebe hrišćaninom, i obrati mnoge neznabošce u veru pravu rečitošću i čudesima mnogim. Tada razjareni Maksimin sam ode u Aleksandriju.Javi se pred sudilištem Evgraf, tajnik i prijatelj svetog Mine, i viknu caru u lice; “I ja sam hrišćanin!” Car se zbesi, trže mač i poseče svetog Evgrafa. Potom naredi nečestivi car, te dželati mačem posekoše svete Minu i Ermogena.

READINGS FOR Today 29th Sunday/ Holy Martyrs Menas, Hermogenes & Eugraphus

Epistle: Col.3:12-16; Reader: Bojan Vanovac; Gospel: St. Luke 17:12-19

Twenty Ninth Sunday After Pentecost

Ten lepers were healed, but only one came to thank the Lord. Isn’t there generally a similar proportion of people who are grateful after receiving benefactions from the Lord? Who has not received good things; or, rather, what do we have in us, or what ever happens to us that is not good for us? Even so, is everyone grateful to God, and does everyone give thanks for everything? There are even those who permit themselves to ask, “Why did God give us existence? It would be better for us not to exist.” God gave you existence so that you would be in eternal bliss; He gave you existence as a gift, as a gift He has furnished you with every means for attaining eternal bliss. The job depends on you: you need only to labour a bit for this. You say, “But I have only sorrows, poverty, diseases, misfortunes.” So what? These also are some of the ways to attain eternal blessedness. Be patient. Your entire life is less than a moment compared with eternity. Even if you had to suffer unceasingly your entire life, against eternity it is nothing; and you still have moments of consolation. Do not look at the present, but at what is prepared for you in the future, and concern yourself with making yourself worthy of that; then you will not notice the sorrows. They will all be swallowed up by unquestioning hope in eternal consolations, and your lips will never cease to utter thanks.

Međutim, ti imaš i časove utehe. Blagodarnost tada neće zatajiti u tvojim ustima.

The Parish Council

This month is typically the time of the year when the Churches elect their new parish councils. Following is a reflection on the Stewardship of serving in this capacity.

When one is called into service  by God’s Grace one is provided with the opportunity to put aside all personal desires and agendas for the sake of promoting the Good News of Jesus Christ. It is for this reason that a Parish Council Member must regularly participate in this Good News by living a Christ-centered Life.  Ideally, this means that the Parish Council Members’ life revolves around the Holy Eucharist—moving from one moment of Communion with God to the next. If our focus is constantly on increasing our Communion with God, how often do you think we will get caught up in the petty squabbles of this world?

A Christ-centered life is also a life of service; and all Parish Council Members are called not to be served, but to serve—just as Christ does.  This service should be focused in a life of love.  Reaching out in compassion to the Church community, a parish council member is responsible for fulfilling his or her duties to the fullest extent possible. He or she is to be the model Steward—continuously offering of their Time, Talents and Treasures in service of the Gospel of Christ.  One has only to take the example of Christ washing the feet of the disciples to see the extent to which this sacrificial service is to go.

The Holy Prophet Zephaniah

Zephaniah was a native of Mount Sarabatha, from the tribe of Simeon. He lived and prophesied in the seventh century before Christ, at the time of Josiah the pious king of Judah. Zephaniah was a contemporary of the Prophet Jeremiah. Having great humility and a pure mind raised to God, he was found worthy of discerning the future. He prophesied the day of the wrath of God and the punishment of Gaza, Ashkalon, Ashdod, Ekron, Nineveh, Jerusalem and Egypt. He saw Jerusalem as a filthy and polluted, … oppressing city…. Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; … her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the Law (Zephaniah 3:1-4). Foreseeing the advent of the Messiah, he enthusiastically exclaimed: Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem (Zephaniah 3:14). This seer of mysteries entered into rest at his birthplace to await the General Resurrection and his reward from God.

Holy Bishop Nicholai, Prologue of Ohrid

Sveti prorok Sofonije.

Rodom od gore Savarata, iz plemena Simeonova. Živeo i prorokovao u VII veku pre Hrista za vreme blagočestivog cara judejskog Josije. Savremenik proroka Jeremije. Imajući smernost veliku i um čist i Bogu uzdignut, on se udostojio proziranja u budućnost. (Sof 3, 14).

HOMILY About Testing

Holy Bishop Nikolaj

“The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours?” (St. Luke 16: 10-12).

This is how the Householder of both the material and spiritual world speaks. Material wealth He calls “small” and the spiritual wealth He calls “great.” To whomever material wealth is given and proves himself to be selfish, hardhearted, arrogant, unmerciful and godless, to him spiritual wealth cannot be given, for if he is unfaithful in small things, he will be unfaithful in great things; when he is unfaithful in the physical, he will be unfaithful in the spiritual.

Man undergoes a test in a foreign world, and if he passes the test, he will gain his own world; if, however, he fails the test, who will give him his world? Man’s true world, his homeland, is the heavenly sublime, divine world. The earthly world, however, is the world of coarseness and deterioration; a foreign world for man. But man is sent into this foreign world to complete a test for that, his true world; for his heavenly homeland.

Both expressions of the Savior, however, are similar in meaning. O how profound and true is their meaning! Just as light disperses darkness, so do these words of the Savior disperse our confusion in relation to that: why are we sent into this life? And what should we do? Whoever is able to read with a pure understanding, to him, everything is said in these two sentences.

Therefore, let us know that God will not bestow the spiritual gifts; the gift of understanding, nor the gift of faith, nor the gift of love, nor the gift of purity, nor the gift of prophecy, nor the gift of miracle-working, nor the gift of authority over demons, nor the gift of discernment, nor the gift of the vision of the heavenly world to him who has gambled and used these gifts for evil—as did the prodigal son—with the gifts of bodily health, or earthly riches or glory and position among men or knowledge of the material world or some other skill or ability.

O Lord Most Gentle, sustain our fidelity toward You in that which You have entrusted to us.

BESEDA o ispitu

Sveti Vladika Nikolaj

Ko je nevjeran u malom, i u mnogom je nevjeran. I ako u Tuđem ne biste vjerni, ko će vam dati vaše? (Lk. 16, 10—12)

Tako govori Domaćin oba sveta, materijalnog i duhovnog. Bogatstvo materijalno naziva On malo, a bogatstvo duhovno naziva On mnogo.

Tebi slava i hvala vavek. Amin.

Venerable Alypius the Stylite

Alypius was born in Hadrianopolis, a city in Paphlagonia. He served as a deacon with Bishop Theodore in the church in that city. But, desirous of a life of solitude, prayer and meditation, Alypius withdrew to a Greek cemetery outside the city.  Alypius set up a cross in the cemetery and built a church in honor of St. Euphemia, who had appeared to him in a dream. Beside the church, he built a tall pillar, climbed on top of it, and spent fifty-three years there in fasting and prayer. Alypius especially endured countless assaults from demons. The courageous Alypius protected himself from the power of the demons by the sign of the Cross and the name of Jesus. Finally the demons were defeated and fled from him. Men began to revere him and come to him for prayer, consolation, instruction and healing.  This God-pleaser had so much grace that he was often illuminated in heavenly light, and a pillar of this light extended to the heavens above him. St. Alypius was a wonderful and mighty miracle-worker, both in life and after his repose. He lived for one hundred years and entered into rest in the year 640, during the reign of Emperor Heraclius.

Holy Bishop Nicholai, Prologue of Ohrid

Prepodobni Alimpije Stolpnik

Tu on pobode krst, i sazida hram u čast sv. No Alimpije mužestveni ograđivaše sebe od demonske sile krsnim znamenjem i imenom Isusovim. Najzad ga pobeđeni demoni ostaviše i pobegoše a ljudi počeše poštovati i dolaziti mu radi molitve, utehe, pouke i iscelenja.

READINGS FOR Today 27th Sunday/ Venerable Alypius the Stylite

Epistle: Eph. 6:10-17   Reader: Serafima Zdjelar   Gospel: St. Luke 13:10-17

HYMN OF PRAISE
Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia

Holy Father Nicholas,
The four corners of the world glorify you
As a knight of the powerful Faith,
The Faith of God, the true Faith.

From the cradle he was devoted to God,
From the cradle until the end;
And God glorified him-
His faithful Nicholas.

Famous was he throughout his life,
And even more renowned after death;
Mighty on earth was he,
And even more mighty is he in heaven.

Glowing spirit, pure heart,
He was a temple of the Living God;
For this the people glorify him
As a wondrous saint.

Nicholas, rich in glory,
Loves those who honor him as their “Krsna Slava”;
Before the throne of the eternal God,
He prays for their good.

O Nicholas, bless us,
Bless your people
Who, before God and before you,
Humbly stand in prayer

POHVALA Svetom Nikolu, Čudotvorac, arhiepiskop mirlikijski

Svetog oca Nikolaja

Četir’ strane sveta slave

Ko viteza silne vere.

Vere Božje, vere prave.

Od kolevke Bogu predan,

Od kolevke sve do kraja;

Pa proslavi i Bog njega —

Svoga vernog Nikolaja.

Za života slavan beše,

A po smrti još slavniji,

Moćan beše i na zemlji,

A ca neba još moćniji.

Svetla duha, čista srca,

On hram beše živog Boga:

Narodi ga zato slave

Kao sveca čudesnoga.

Bogat slavom Nikolaje.

On svečare svoje voli,

Pred prestolom večnog Boga

Za njihno se dobro moli.

Blagoslovi, Nikolaje,

Blagoslovi ljude tvoje,

Što pred Bogom i pred tobom

Na molitvi smerno stoje.

In his famous work known as The Ladder of Divine Ascent, St. John Climacus writes how our life can be perfected in a union with Christ. He illustrates 30 steps that are necessary to reach Jesus and the Kingdom of God. Through these steps, we make changes in our lives that help us to become Christ-like, to experience Christian perfection which is to live just as Jesus did.

As we reflect upon these steps, let us focus our Stewardship efforts on Time, Talents and Treasures. Pray and consider how we can make a difference and let’s remember St. John’s guidance that we “live just as Jesus did” and exercise all of the gifts that God has provided to us. St. John’s theme is living our daily life for the Heavenly (which is everlasting) and not the earthly (which is temporary).

O holy Father John, with rivers of tears you have made the barren desert bloom, and with heartfelt sighings of repentance you have made your labors bear fruit a hundredfold. O Saint, pray to Christ our God for the Salvation of our souls. Amen.
