The Holy Prophet Obadiah

Obadiah was born in the village of Betharam in the region of Shechem. He lived at the court of King Ahab, but when the king turned away from true worship and bowed down to idols, Obadiah did not follow the king, but continued to serve the one, true God. When the evil Queen Jezebel, in her hatred of Elias, raised a persecution against all the prophets of God, Obadiah gathered a hundred of them, hid them in two caves, and fed them to the end of the persecution (I Kings 18:4). A contemporary of the great Prophet Elias, Obadiah revered him greatly and served him in all things, as his follower and disciple. He lived nine hundred years before Christ and entered peacefully into rest. Holy Bishop Nicholai

Sv. Prorok Avdija.

A kada opaka carica Jezavelja zbog Ilije diže hajku na sve proroke Božje, Avdija sabra stotinu njih, sakri ih u dve peštere i hranjaše ih do kraja (I. Car. 18, 4). Savremenik velikog proroka Ilije Avdija poštovaše Iliju veoma i slušaše ga u svemu kao sledbenik i učenik njegov. Sveti Vladika Nikolai, Ohridski Prolog

READINGS FOR Today 25th Sunday/ Holy Prophet Obadiah

Epistle: Eph. 5:8-19 Reader: Brennan Hughes Gospel: St. Luke 12:16-21

Twenty Sixth Sunday After Pentecost

Having spoken the parable about the man who became rich and planned to just eat, drink and be merry, and for this was struck with death, not remaining alive for the supposed pleasures, the Lord concluded: So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. “So”—that is, such occurs, or such a lot befalls both these and others. Those who become rich and forget about God only think about pleasures of the flesh. Let those who desire to avoid this bitter lot “lay up” not “unto themselves, but be rich only toward God.” Since riches come from God, then devote them to God when they flow, and holy riches will come of it. Divide all surplus with the needy: this will be the same as returning to God what was given by God. He who gives to a poor person gives to God. Seemingly exhausting his riches, such a person becomes truly rich—rich through good deeds, rich for God. In pleasing Him he becomes rich in God, and by attracting His good will, he becomes rich from God, Who makes one who is faithful over a few things, ruler over many things. He becomes rich toward God, and not toward himself, for he does not consider himself to be master of the house, but only a steward and accountant, whose entire concern consists of satisfying all who come to him in need. But he fears spending anything in particular on himself, considering it to be an improper usage of property entrusted to him.

Isaiah 58:6-9 – helping the poor is pleasing to God

6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:

to loose the chains of injustice

and untie the cords of the yoke,

to set the oppressed free

and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry

and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter

when you see the naked, to clothe them,

and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,

and your healing will quickly appear;

then your righteousness[a] will go before you,

and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;

you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

St. Theophan the Recluse – An example…

Let’s take an example: A beggar comes up to you; it is God who brought him. What should you do? You must help him. God has brought the beggar, of course, desiring you to act towards this beggar in a manner pleasing to Him, and He watches to see what you will actually do …If you do what is pleasing to God, you will be taking a step toward the ultimate goal, the inheritance of Heaven.

Stewardship, and how we use our Time, Talents and Treasures, is one of the positive steps that we can take for our personal Salvation!

St. John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria

John was born on the island of Cyprus. John was raised as a true Christian from childhood. At the insistence of his parents, he married and had children. However, by God’s providence, his wife and children passed from this world into the next.

Renowned for his compassion and piety, John was chosen as Patriarch of Alexandria in the time of Emperor Heraclius. He governed the Church of Alexandria for ten years as a true shepherd, safeguarding it from pagans and heretics. He was a model of meekness, charity and love for his fellow men. He said: “If you desire nobility, seek it not in blood but in virtues, for this is true nobility.” All the saints have been distinguished by mercifulness, but St. John was completely dedicated to this wonderful virtue.

Once, as he was on his way to the Church of Saints Cyrus and John, it happened that he met a needy and unfortunate widow who spoke to him at length about her misfortune. The patriarch’s escorts became bored by the woman’s lengthy complaint, and urged the bishop to hurry to the church for the service, intimating that he could hear the woman’s story afterward. John said to them: “And how will God listen to me, if I do not listen to her?” He would not leave until he heard the widow’s complaint to the end. Holy Bishop Nicholai

Sv. Jovan Milostivi. Patrijarh Aleksandrijski.

READINGS FOR Today 25th Sunday/ St. John the Merciful

Epistle: Eph. 4:1-6 Reader: Lindsay Munich Gospel: St. Luke 10:25-37

Twenty Fifth Sunday After Pentecost.

To the man who asked how to be saved, the Lord on his part offered a question: What is written in the law? How readest thou? By this He showed that to resolve all perplexity one must turn to the word of God. And so that there will not be such perplexity at all it is best to always read Divine Scripture attentively, with discernment and sympathy, applying it to your own life, and fulfilling in your own thoughts what relates to thoughts, in your own feelings and dispositions what relates to the senses, and in your deeds what relates to deeds. One who hearkens to the word of God gathers bright understanding of all that is in him, what is near to him, and what is above him; he clarifies his obligations in all aspects of life, and holy rules, like valuable pearls, are strung onto the thread of his conscience, which then precisely and definitely indicate how and when to act so that he please the Lord. He tames the passions—something reading the word of God always acts to assuage. No matter what passion troubles you, begin to read the word of God and the passion will become quieter and quieter, and at last it will be entirely calmed. He who enriches himself through knowledge of the word of God is overshadowed by the pillar of cloud which guided the Israelites in the desert.

On obuzdava i strasti.

A reflection from a parishioner…

Within the Scriptures, I focused on the Saints and what they accomplished for our Orthodox faith. They left their homes and families, they took very few supplies, they were hungry and cold, and at times, had no shelter to rest. On many occasions, they took their mission work to cities where they were not welcomed or provided with food and at times, imprisoned. They had one goal in mind and that was to bring the joy of Jesus Christ to the world and eternal life in His Heavenly Kingdom.

When I reflect upon their commitment and think about my Stewardship, there are three similarities between what they did versus what I must do. The Saints were focused on God, Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Church. I must focus on God and Jesus Christ as well with religious education as a priority. The Saints established Churches, missions and monasteries – all to provide the valuable ministries that I receive. I must continue to support my Church and it’s ministries with my Stewardship. The Saints had an undeniable faith in God, as the Father. I must strengthen my faith in God and work towards my personal salvation – knowing that God will provide for my every need.

Considering my Stewardship of Time, Talents and Treasures – I realized that God will one day judge whether I have been a good and faithful Steward of all that He has provided.

READINGS FOR TODAY                          24th Sunday/ Holy Martyrs Galaction and his wife Episteme

Epistle: Eph. 2:14-22 Gospel: St. Luke 8:41-56

Twenty Fourth Sunday After Pentecost

Jairus openly, in front of everyone, fell to the Savior’s feet beseeching the Lord to heal his daughter, and was heard. The Lord, saying nothing, immediately arose and went to his house. On the way to Jairus’ house a woman with an issue of blood was healed, of course also not without prayer on her part, although she did not appeal in word and did not fall down at the Lord’s feet—she had a heartfelt prayer of faith. The Lord heard her and gave her healing. It all occurred secretly. The woman with the issue of blood turned to the Lord in her heart; the Lord heard this wail of the heart and granted her petition. Both this woman and Jairus had essentially the same prayer, although we can discern certain degrees in them. Such prayers full of faith, hope and devotion never go unheard. People sometimes say, “I pray and pray, but my prayer still is not heard.” Labor to ascend to a measure of prayer that cannot be refused, and you will see why it was not heard. Whether you are in a prayerful situation like Jairus, or in a simple, ordinary one, like everyone around him, such as the woman with the issue of blood, when true prayer arises in your heart it will undoubtedly reach the Lord and incline Him towards mercy. The question is how to attain such prayer. Labor, and you will attain it. All prayer rules have as their object to lift up those who pray to such a measure of prayer, and all who sensibly follow this course of prayer reach their goal.

From Offering You “Your Own of Your Own” by Paul Meyendorff: Stewardship should be a balance of Time, Talents and Treasures! When thinking about Stewardship and making your commitment, remember to include those areas that are of most interest to you. These are the many opportunities to provide of your Time and Talents – general Church cleaning, leading at a local soup kitchen, organizing a singing event at a local nursing home, driving an elderly parishioner to Church – the key is that each and every act of almsgiving pleases God and defines us as Stewards.

November 4, 2012 Sunday Bulletin

Volume 48; Number 45 November 4, 2012

READINGS FOR today 22nd Sunday/St. Abercius, Equal to the Apostles

Epistle: Gal.6:11-18 Readers: Alexis Brunelle Gospel: St. Luke 16:19-31

RESPONSIBILITY BEFORE GOD, by DAVID BATRICH (our guest next week)

During this past week, a parishioner was having a discussion during coffee hour and said “I understand Stewardship, but what is my responsibility?” When we think about Stewardship, the responsibility we have should be very serious. We strive to excel in our careers so that we can live a comfortable life and provide for our families. We take our jobs seriously and the responsibility to do well, to be on time, to put in the hours necessary to succeed and at times, to be away from our family, all so that management can say – “he is a company man, worthy of a promotion, gives his time to our corporate efforts.” Think about the responsibility of the rich man from today’s Gospel reading – what could he have done while on this earth to place him in Heaven with Lazarus, instead of being tormented in Hades?

What responsibility do we take for God, Jesus Christ and our Church, as Stewards of what has been provided for us? Do we strive to excel in our faith so that we can live a humble life and provide for our Church? Do we set a good example for our children so that they understand Stewardship and become good Stewards of our parish? Do we take the Church seriously, take the responsibility necessary as a Steward, to put in the hours sharing our Time, Talents and Treasures? And at times, do we actually move away from the earthly life to focus on the Heavenly? Can God can say – he is a faithful man, worthy of Salvation, gives selflessly as a Steward to God’s efforts?

What we must give up? Nothing compared to what the Apostles gave up! What we must face? Nothing compared to what Jesus faced! What we do? Nothing compared to what God has done!

VERA I DELA

October 28, 2012 Sunday Bulletin

Volume 48; Number 44             October 28, 2012

READINGS FOR TODAY                         21th Sunday/Holy Martyr Lucian
Epistle: GAL. 2:16-20            Reader: Jason Delmont            Gospel: St. LUKE 8:5-15

THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

The thorns and thistles which choke the word of Divine truth, in addition to being riches, pleasures and cares of this life, at the current time must also be understood to be various false teachings, spread by scholars who have lost the truth and have been knocked off the path to it. Among us such theories differ much: some publicly and openly go against the truth; others do so by oblique hints that are nevertheless understood by those toward whom they are directed. In essence they act like carbon monoxide poisoning—they enter unnoticeably, and cloud the head, leading to a loss of clear consciousness of everything around. He who gets this carbon monoxide poisoning begins to rave like one who is asleep, for everything already appears to him entirely not as it is, not as it appears to one who is in his right mind. When you meet such a person you see that not only is all truth is suppressed in him, but any feeling for the truth is also stifled, and a lie has penetrated all the components of his mind. How should one be? Do not listen to these ravings or read them; and when they are unwillingly heard or read, throw them out of your head. When they are not thrown out—submit them to reason, and they all will scatter like smoke.
