READINGS FOR TODAY 16th Sunday/After-feast of the Theotokos Nativity/Sunday before the Cross

Epistles: Gal.6:11-18; 2Cor.6:1-10            Gospels: St. John 3:13-17; Matthew 25:14-30

THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST.

The parable about the talents* offers the thought that life is a time for trading. That means that it is necessary to hasten to use this time as a person would hurry to a market to bargain for what he can. Even if one has only brought cheap shoes, or only inexpensive goods, he does not sit with his arms folded, but contrives to call over buyers to sell what he has and then buy for himself what he needs. No one who has received life from the Lord can say that he does not have a single talent—everyone has something, and not just one thing; everyone, therefore, has something with which to trade and make a profit. Do not look around and calculate what others have received, but take a good look at yourself and determine more precisely what lies in you and what you can gain for that which you have, and then act according to this plan without laziness. At the Judgment you will not be asked why you did not gain ten talents if you had only one, and you will not even be asked why you gained only one talent on your one, but you will be told that you gained a talent, half a talent or a tenth of its worth. And the reward will not be because you received the talents, but because you gained. There will be nothing with which to justify yourself—not with nobleness, nor poverty, nor lack of education. Had you not been given any talents, this would not be an issue. But you had hands and feet. You will be asked, what did you gain with them? You had a tongue, what did you gain with it? In this way will the inequalities of earthly states be leveled out at God’s judgment. St. Theophan the Recluse

* A “talent” was money, a very valuable coin, in biblical times. In the parable Jesus uses the word “talent” to indicate the gifts we have received from God.

Sv. Teofan Zatvorenik

READINGS FOR TODAY      15th Sunday after Pentecost

Epistle: 2 Cor. 4:6-15            Gospel: St. Matthew 22:35-46

THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

The Lord offered the commandment about love for God and one’s neighbor, and immediately supplemented it with the teaching about His Sonship to God and His Divinity. Why was this? Because true love for God and people is possible no way other than by the influence of faith in the Divinity of Christ the Saviour, that He is the incarnate Son of God. Such faith arouses love for God, for how can one not love God, who has loved us so much, Who did not even spare His Only-Begotten Son, but gave Him up for us? Faith brings this love to complete fulfillment, or to what it seeks; while love seeks a living union. To attain this union, one must overcome a feeling of God’s righteousness which punishes sin; without this it is terrifying to approach God. This feeling is overcome through the conviction that God’s righteousness is fulfilled by the death on the cross of the Son of God. Such a conviction comes from faith; consequently, faith opens the path of love toward God. This is the first thing. Second: faith in the Divinity of the Son of God Who was incarnate, suffered, and was buried for our sake, gives an example of love for one’s neighbor; for love is when one lays down his life for his beloved. Faith also gives strength for the manifestation of such love. To have such love, one must become a new person, giving up all self-centeredness through self-denial. Only in Christ does a person become a new creature; but we can only be in Christ if we unite with Christ by faith and grace-filled rebirth through the holy mysteries accepted with faith. From here it follows that any expectation by people without faith to maintain even good moral conduct is in vain. Everything goes together; it is impossible to divide a man. The new man is formed in Christ as a whole. St. Theophan the Recluse

On se mora čitav ostvariti. Sv. Teofan Zatvorenik

READINGS FOR TODAY  14th Sunday after Pentecost /Synaxis of Serbian Illuminators/Sabor Srpskih Svetitelja

Epistle: 2 Cor.1:21-2:4, Hebrews 13:7-16            Gospel: St. Matthew 22:2-14; 5:14-19

THE SYNAXIS OF THE HOLY ILLUMINATORS AND TEACHERS OF SERBIA

On this day are commemorated not all the saints of Serbia in general, but several archbishops and patriarchs:

St. Sava, the first Archbishop of Serbia, (+1236) called equal to the apostles.

Arsenius, (+1266) St. Sava’s successor, a great hierarch and wonderworker.

Sava II (+1268), son of King Stephen the First-Crowned, who lived a long time and Jerusalem and was called ‘similar to Moses in meekness.’

Nicodemus (+1325), who lived in asceticism on the Holy Mountain, and was abbot of Hilandar and archbishop of ‘all the Serbian and maritime lands.’

Joannicius (+1349) archbishop and then, from 1346, patriarch.

Ephraim (+1400), an ascetic, chosen against his will as patriarch in the time of Prince Lazar, in 1376. He crowned Lazar and then renounced the patriarchal throne and withdrew into solitude.

Spiridon (+1388), Ephraim’s successor.

Macarius (+1574), who restored many old endowments, printed church books in Skadar, Venice, Belgrade and other places, built the famous refectory in the monastery at Pec, did much for the advancement of the Church with the help of his brother, Mehmed Sokolovic.

Gabriel (+1656), by birth a nobleman of the Rajic family, who took part in the Moscow Council under Patriarch Nikhon, because of which he was tortured by the Turks and hanged.

As well as these, there are also commemorated Eustace, Jacob, Danilo, Sava III, Gregory, John Maxim and Nikhon. Many of them lived the ascetic life on the Holy Mountain, and all were ‘gentle and faithful servants, good laborers in the Lord’s vineyard.’

Epistle: 1 Cor.16:13-24    Gospel: St. Matthew 21:33-42

THE FALLING ASLEEP OF THE MOST-HOLY BIRTH-GIVER OF GOD

In her old age, the Theotokos often prayed to the Lord and her God on the Mount of Olives, the site of His Ascension, that He take her from this world as soon as possible. On one occasion, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her and revealed to her that within three days she will find repose. The angel gave her a palm-branch to be carried at the time of her funeral procession. She returned to her home with great joy, desiring in her heart once more to see in this life, all of the apostles of Christ. The Lord fulfilled her wish and all of the apostles, borne by angels in the clouds, gathered at the same time at the home of John on Zion. With great rejoicing, she saw the holy apostles, encouraged them, counseled them and comforted them. Following that, she peacefully gave up her soul to God without any pain or physical illness. The apostles took the coffin with her body from which an aromatic fragrance emitted and, in the company of many Christians, bore it to the Garden of Gethsemane to the sepulchre of [her parents], Saints Joachim and Anna. The Apostle Thomas was absent, again according to God’s Providence, in order that a new and all-glorious mystery of the Holy Theotokos would again be revealed. On the third day, Thomas arrived and desired to venerate [kiss] the body of the Holy All-pure one. But when the apostles opened the sepulchre, they found only the winding sheet and the body was not in the tomb. That evening, the Theotokos appeared to the apostles surrounded by a myriad of angels and said to them: “Rejoice, I will be with you always”. It is not exactly known how old the Theotokos was at the time of her Falling Asleep but the overwhelming opinion is that she was over sixty years of age. Prolog of Ohrid

Uspenije Presvete Bogorodice

Apostoli uzeše kovčeg s telom njenim, od koga izlazaše aromatni miris, i u pratnji mnoštva hrišćana preneše u vrt Getsimanski u grobnicu sv. Joakima i Ane. Trećeg dana stiže i on, i poželi da celiva telo Svete Prečiste.
