READINGS FOR today 12th Sunday /Leave-taking of the Transfiguration/Odanije Preobraženja

Epistle: 1 Cor.25:1-11 Gospel: St. Matthew 19:16-26

TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

It is hard for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven (Mt.19:23). Here is meant a rich man who sees himself as the cause and source of his own prosperity. But as soon as one who has many possessions cuts off all attachment to them, extinguishes within himself all reliance on them, and ceases to see them as his sustenance, then in his heart he is the same as one who possesses nothing—for thus is the road to the kingdom open. Riches are then not a hindrance, but a help, for they provide the means for charitable works. Riches themselves are not the misfortune, but rather reliance upon riches and attachment to them. This thought can be generalized in this way: whoever relies on something and is attached to something is rich in that thing. Whoever relies on the one and only God, and cleaves to Him with all his heart, is rich in God. Whoever relies on something else, and turns his heart to it instead of God, such a person is rich in this other thing, but not in God. From this it follows that he who is not rich in God has no entrance into the kingdom of God. That “something else” can be such things as family relations, friends, the mind, status, career, and so forth.

St. Theophan the Recluse

Sv. Teofan Zatvorenik

READINGS FOR today 11th Sunday /Transfiguration of our Lord/ Preobraženje Gospodnje

Epistle: 2 Peter 1:10-19 Gospel: St. Matthew 17:1-

TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD

On the Transfiguration a voice from heaven uttered only hear ye Him (Matt. 17:5). Why is this so? Because the fruit of obedience was being shown to them. It was as if the Heavenly Father were saying: Do you want to attain this? Hear what He will suggest and command you. If you go on His path, you will undoubtedly enter into the realm of light, which will embrace you not from without, but will come forth from within, and always keep you in a state in which all of your bones will utter: it is good for us to be this way. You will be filled with the light of joy, the light of good will, the light of knowledge; all sorrows will pass by, the dissonance of the passions will disappear, falsehood and delusion will disperse. On the earth you will become heavenly; from among the earthly-born, you will become Godly-born; from amidst the perishable you will become eternally blessed. Then all will be yours, because you yourselves will become Christ’s. He who loves Christ the Lord is beloved of the heavenly Father, and Both come to him and make their abode with him.

This is the light of the Transfiguration! St. Theophan the Recluse

Sv. Teofan

STEWARDSHIP BULLETIN MESSAGE

Jesus said: 15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:15-21

What Jesus focuses on is that there are trees that bear good fruit and bad fruit… people that do good works and those who do not provide of their Time, Talents and Treasures or even do bad works.

The key to Salvation is “doing the will of the Father who is in heaven” and this is done through our Stewardship. We find many examples in the Bible where we experience Stewardship …the widow and the three mites… the good Samaritan, the work of the Apostles and others. In God’s eyes, it doesn’t take much but the focus is on doing – getting involved, volunteering, donating clothing, providing a meal for a homeless person, cleaning the exterior of a women’s shelter, creating a care package for the military and supporting your Church with your financial commitment.

September will be the beginning of a new Ecclesiastical year and many opportunities to create and exercise our personal Stewardship plan. The key is not to wait but to start now!

READINGS FOR today 10th Sunday /Venerable Mother Angelina/ Apostles Silas & Silvanus

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 4:9-16 Gospel: St. Matthew 17:14-23

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

“This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting” (Mt. 17:21). If this kind of demon goes out by the prayer and fasting of another person, then it is even less able to enter one who fasts and prays himself. What protection! Although there are a slew of demons and all the air is packed with them, they cannot do anything to one who is protected by prayer and fasting. Fasting is universal temperance, prayer is universal communication with God; the former defends from the outside, whereas the latter from within directs a fiery weapon against the enemies. The demons can sense a faster and man of prayer from a distance, and they run far away from him so as avoid a painful blow. Is it feasible to think that where there is no fasting and prayer, there already is a demon? Yes, it is. The demons lodging in a person, do not always reveal their presence, but lurk there, stealthily teaching their host every evil and turning him away from every good thing; so this person is certain that he is doing everything on his own, but meanwhile he is only fulfilling the will of his enemy. Just commence prayer and fasting and the enemy will immediately depart, then wait on the side for an opportunity to somehow return again. And he truly will return, as soon as prayer and fasting are abandoned. St. Theophan the Recluse

On se stvarno i vpaća, čim budu ostavljeni post i molitva. Sv. Teofan

MEDITATION FOR THE DORMITION FAST, by Fr. Rodney Torbic

The Dormition Fast is an opportunity for Orthodox Christians to seriously contemplate the Mother of God.

The Dormition Fast is an opportunity for Orthodox Christians to reflect upon the Annunciation of Jesus Christ’s birth.

The Dormition Fast is an opportunity to think about the Nativity of Jesus Christ.

The Dormition Fast is an opportunity to remember Jesus Christ’s first miracle at the wedding of Cana.

The Mother of God holds a prominent position on the iconostasis of each Orthodox Church.

The Mother of God is referred to with great consistency in the services of the Holy Orthodox Church.

The Mother of God is held carefully in the heart of each Orthodox Christian.

The Dormition Fast invites us to reach deep within our hearts and minds to consider the purity of the Mother of God.

The Dormition Fast invites us to reach deep within our hearts and minds to reverence the Mother of God.

The Dormition Fast invites us to reach deep within our hearts and minds to consider the obedience of the Mother of God.

READINGS FOR today 9th Sunday after Pentecost

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 3:9-17               Gospel: St. Matthew 14:22-34

Ninth Sunday After Pentecost

The holy apostle Peter, with the Lord’s permission, gets down from the ship and walks on the water; then he yields to the movement of fear and begins to drown. The fact that he decided upon such an unusual act, hoping in the Lord, is nothing deserving reprimand—otherwise the Lord would not have allowed him to do this. The reprimand comes because he did not sustain the original state of his soul. He was filled with inspired hope in the Lord’s ability to do anything, and this gave him the boldness to entrust himself to the waves. Several steps were already made along this new path—it was necessary only to stand more firmly in hope, gazing at the Lord Who is near, and at the experience of walking in His strength. Instead, gave himself over to human thoughts: “The wind is strong, the waves are great, the water is not firm;” and this shook loose and weakened his firmness of faith and hope. Because of this he broke away from the Lord’s hands, and, left to the operation of nature’s laws, began to drown. The Lord rebuked him: O ye of little faith! Why did you doubt? showing that in this lay the entire reason for the misfortune. Behold a lesson for all who undertake something, great or small, with the aim of pleasing the Lord! Keep your first state of faith and hope, from which a great virtue is born—patience in doing good, which serves as the basis for a God-pleasing life. As long as these dispositions are maintained, inspiration for laboring on the path begun does not go away; and obstacles, no matter how great they may be, are not noticed. When these dispositions weaken, the soul is filled with human reasoning about human methods of preserving one’s life and conducting the affairs which one has begun. But since this reasoning always turns out to be powerless, fear of how one should be enters the soul; from this comes wavering—wondering whether or not to continue—and in the end comes a complete return. You must do it this way; if you begin, keep it up—chase away troubling thoughts, and be bold in the Lord, Who is nearby. St. Theophan the Recluse

Sv. Teofan
